Key Terms for Search Engine Marketing

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  • SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. To get visitors to your website, there are things you can do to optimize the site for search engines like Google.
  • SEO involves the strategies and tactics used to increase the number of visitors to a website by increasing its search ranking. 
  • A well around approach to SEO involves many things: coding best-practices, keyword research, content development strategies, link-building strategies, and more.
Search Engine Marketing

SEM, or paid search, is the process of paying to show your site when a user searches for a specific keyword. Paid search results often show up at the top of the search results and businesses can compete for the spots at the top of the results.

Keyword Research
  • Keyword research is the process of finding what words and phrases your target audience is looking for and how often they are doing so.
  • Ideally, you want to target searches with high volume and lower competition.
  • Content on the webpage, including titles, headings and body content, should include the target keywords.
SERP

The SERP, or search engine results page, is the page that displays to the user after performing a search that contains the search results. Within the search results, there are usually both paid and organic results. 

Avg. Position
  • The spot in the paid search results that your ad is showing up in, on average.
  • Generally, you want to be in the highest slot which means you’ll want the lowest average position.
  • If you were in the top spot all the time you would have an average position of 1, the second spot would be 2, etc.
Ad Rank

Combination of various factors including Quality Score and Max CPC that determine your position in the paid search results.

Quality Score
  • The rating that Google assigns to you at the keyword-level that represents the overall quality of your marketing for that keyword.
  • There are three main factors that play into Quality Score: Ad Relevance, Landing Page Experience, and Expected CTR.
Ad Relevance

How relevant your ad copy and advertisement as a whole is to the search.

Expected CTR

The click-through rate that Google expects to see for your ad, generally based on historical data, after accounting for which position you were in.

Landing Page Experience
  • Score based on the performance of your ads after the user has clicked on your ad. 

  • If you take the user to a relevant landing page and they are able to find what they are looking for, you will score highly on this.

Max CPC

Your bid for any given keyword or the maximum you are willing to pay for a click on your ad.

Avg. CPC

Backward-looking metric telling you on average, in the past, how much you paid per click on your ad for any given keyword.

Impressions
  • How many times a keyword was searched and your ad showed up somewhere on the page.

  • Note, you might not be showing up every time for any given keyword so don’t confuse impressions with the overall search volume.
