69 Students Rated Our UX Design Classes 5 Stars

I just completed the UX Design Bootcamp and highly recommend this course to anyone interested in learning about UX. The class gave a very comprehensive overview into the philosophy and process of UX, showed real world UX case study examples and then had us apply the UX process to our own class project. In the end I built a working prototype of an app that was based on and informed by me conducting actual user interviews, personas, journey maps, etc. etc. It was a great experience to apply the UX process to building my app all while learning a new program—Sketch. The last class everyone presented their case study and app—very inspiring to see what some of my class mates accomplished in a few weeks!

Noreen O.

The professor was amazing and so inviting. I felt respected and was treated like a true UX professional! The connections I made with the rest of the class really fueled my creativity, insights, and understanding of the work.

Katlyn Carrion

When I entered the UX Fundamentals class, I felt that I was a complete newbie to the UX field. After I finished the class, not only was I able to finish a prototype that I really love, I'm most likely going to develop it soon.

Eva Schicker

Before the class, I had minimal UX knowledge and no idea where to begin. My teacher, Jason, was nothing short of amazing. I started off in total confusion and left with a new way of looking at design. The class taught the logic of UX, my questions were all answered, and best practices were recommended. I learned while having fun with my personal project. There was a lot to learn in a short amount of time but it never seemed overwhelming. I highly recommend!

Rita Healy, Komar

The UX Fundamentals class was an in-depth look into the behind-the-scenes work that takes place before a site or app goes live. For people like me that thought coding knowledge was the only thing needed to break into digital, this was a revelation. User testing and flows, journey maps, ideating, wireframing and prototyping are the true heart of web design. If you want to wear many hats in the digital world (as potential employers will practically demand of you), this is the class for you.

Marne Mayer, Men's Fitness

The User Experience Design in a Day class was extremely fascinating and educational. It is a great overview and a must-take for anyone in web design. Ron "demystified" the UX design process. I am looking forward to taking the next class, User Experience Fundamentals, to further my knowledge.

I'm really glad I found Noble Desktop! I've been using Photoshop for web design projects for the past 5 years, and I knew I needed to be up to date with the latest technology. I tried figuring it out on my own but it was too overwhelming, and YouTube videos only got me so far. I was looking for an online class with a live instructor, and this was exactly what I needed to get a good understanding and have confidence using the software at my workplace. I was shown so many solutions to things that were holding me back in Photoshop, and I'm excited to start using it now.

Kristen, Carrus

First time taking a virtual class. Noble Desktop made it so easy. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Kathryn R Kenosian-Viola, freelancer

I would highly recommend this class to anyone who is interested in learning XD! They cover alot of ground and the demos and exercises are thorough, our instructor was very open about sharing industry knowledge, answering questions, and having thoughtful conversations which I found very insightful!

Kristine, WebEnertia

UX and UI Design

Before we dive into UX, let’s clarify the difference between User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design. Think of UX as the experience of going on a road trip, and UI as the stop lights, signs, and lane markings that shape the events on the road. The appearance of the stop lights, signs, and lane markings each had to be designed (like the UI of a website or app), but how they all affect your driving experience defines the overall user experience (UX).

What Do UX Designers Do?

UX designers are responsible for creating a customer experience that is easy, intuitive, and anticipates the customer’s needs. UX designers are generally concerned with the total customer experience including the ease of finding information within the product and accomplishing tasks quickly, easily, and enjoyably. (UI designers focus on visual elements such as graphics, typography, color, and composition.)

The following are primary tasks of UX designers, that you would learn in our UX design classes:

1. User Research & Product Development

A good first step for a UX designer is product and concept development, which includes researching existing users and creating user personas based on this research. A UX designer may conduct user interviews and contextual research (observing users do an activity in their usual everyday environment).

2. Wireframes, Prototypes, & Mockups

After UX designers have an initial idea of what the product should do and what the customer experience should entail, they move on to wireframes, prototypes, and mockups.

Wireframes:

Text Bank Wireframe- iteration by Mark Congiusta. CC BY 2.0

Wireframes demonstrate where content goes, and how the app or website functions (screen by screen). Wireframes are typically drawn by hand or designed on a computer in grayscale with minimal color, text, and images. The wireframe should be detailed enough to explain the purpose of the product and also present the specific layout to achieve that purpose.

UX designers make the most changes to the layout, structure, and functionality of the product at the wireframe stage. Because designers draw wireframes by hand, the time investment and development costs are minimal. At the end of the wireframe phrase, some companies send the wireframes to developers to code the core structure of the app, while others move on to the prototype or mockup.

Prototypes:

The prototype is an interactive representation of how the product will operate. The prototype is a functional version of the concept without code or final UI design, letting the UX designer test out ideas quickly without expensive development costs. It can demonstrate paths between pages or screens and animations within the design. UX designers may present the prototype design to a client and do user testing with it. Many of the UI decisions happen after the prototyping phase. Prototypes can be built with apps such as Sketch, Photoshop, Adobe XD, and InVision (to name just a few).

Mockups:

A mockup is a high-fidelity, static representation of the product. The mockup stage is where designers choose the colors, typography, etc. The mockup takes time to develop, so UX designers typically don’t get to this stage until they are sure about the features and flow of the app or website. The mockup is usually created with apps such as Sketch, Photoshop, and Adobe XD.

3. Usability Testing

User testing is an important part of the UX design process. UX designers demo a prototype to prospective users, so they can understand a user’s pain points while using the product, and suggest improvements. Sometimes users won’t notice or interact with a particular button or will propose a new feature. Here are some of the different forms of usability testing:

  • Observation: Users are given access to the product while in the presence of the researcher who watches the user interact with the product.
Example: Researchers observe how long it took the user to find the “order” button.
  • Questionnaires: Users are given access to the product and asked to provide open-ended feedback about their experience or answer a list of questions.
Example: Users answer questions such as “Did you experience any bugs while using the app?”
  • Recording: Users are given access to the product, and their experience is recorded via screen recording software and shared with the team.
Example: Researchers examine the screens and pages that users spend the most time browsing.

4. Communication

Good communication skills are important for a UX designer. UX designers must explain a product to users in plain English, then translate customer feedback to the developers writing code, clients, digital marketers, and other stakeholders who don’t understand the technical language of design. For UX designers, the ability to communicate with individuals of differing technical expertise is essential.

5. Product Improvements & Feedback

UX designers make adjustments to the product based on research and user feedback. These adjustments can include changing the layout of screens and order of information, adding or removing features, and altering the interface to make the customer experience more intuitive.

Should I Study UX or UI Design?

Keep in mind that though UI and UX are distinct fields, they overlap and smaller companies may combine these roles. At a 10-person company, a UX or UI designer may do research, UI design, and development tasks. At a large company, UX designers may focus on a single aspect of UX (research, design, user testing, etc.) and a UI designer may focus exclusively on the visual design.

Study UX Design if you:

  • Enjoy conducting research, data analysis, and A/B testing.
  • Want to work with customers as well as developers and designers.
  • Prefer designing customer experiences over graphical elements.

Study UI Design if you:

  • Enjoy designing layouts, working with colors, typography, etc.
  • Prefer to work with UI/Visual design tasks, rather than customers.
  • Want to work with developers and designers, rather than customers.

1-Minute Overview

UX Design Resources

  • What is UX Design?

UX and UI Design Before we dive into UX, let’s clarify the difference between User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design. Think of UX as the experience of going on a road trip, and UI as the stop lights...

Why Attend a UX Design Class?

User Experience (UX) design is a relatively new concept that’s usually used to create electronic devices and applications that are both visually pleasing and useful. It combines the power of researching end users, testing multiple versions of a product, and visually designing the aesthetic and the flow of an experience.

User experience has become a top priority for software and application companies – especially startups. As apps have evolved over the past decade, so have user’s expectations. A beautiful, well-functioning and responsive application that functions well on any screen size is more important now than it ever has been.

UX Design is the perfect gateway into tech for any visual designer. It makes for an easy career change and sometimes a major salary upgrade. It’s also a great career trajectory for anyone who enjoys research and data analysis because you’ll be relying on research to create your designs.

You can learn UX Design through a UX Design Bootcamp in-person or live online. You learn UX design through hands-on projects that are proven to teach the concepts you need to get a job. You can start learning UX Design even as a complete beginner. You’ll learn how to optimize user engagement, develop concepts, prototyping and testing, and how to work with clients.

If you have any experience in development, a user interface design career path might be better suited to your skillset. UI is often combined with UX because its design creates the user’s experience. These jobs can be found individually at big app companies, software companies, and in certain web development niches but they’re usually combined.

Get a comprehensive UX and UI education with a UX & UI Design Certificate. Along with the concepts that you learn in a UX Design bootcamp, this certificate will also teach you Sketch, Photoshop, and Illustrator for UI Design. You’ll learn how to beautify the user experience to make it as functional but enticing as possible.

UX and UI design are incredibly difficult to learn on your own as a complete beginner. Unless you have experience creating user interfaces in the past, you’ll definitely want to invest in a bootcamp.

You’ll be learning from industry experts who have the experience you can rely on in this ever-changing field to provide you with the most relevant skills that employers are looking for. You’ll leave bootcamp with a comprehensive education that sets you up for landing an actual job and a portfolio that shows off your new skills.

UX Design is a great place to start if you’re a designer who wants to get into tech, a researcher who wants to be more creative, or a developer who is looking to get out of coding and into the needs of end-users. Whatever your goals, learning UX Design is a great first step toward a career you love and a salary you can thrive on.

User Experience Design Terms

User Experience (UX) Design
  • User Experience (UX) involves a person’s behaviors, attitudes, and emotions about using a particular product, system, or service.
  • Includes the practical, experiential, emotional, meaningful, and valuable aspects of human-computer interaction and product ownership.
  • Considers a person’s perceptions of system aspects such as utility, ease of use, and efficiency.
  • UX is important because of the increased emphasis on user-centered design. It’s not about what the client wants, it’s what the user needs and wants.
User Interface (UI) Design
  • User Interface (UI) design focuses on the appearance of things that people interact with: websites, apps, appliances, and more.
  • The goal of UI design is to make things look attractive and legible, all while keeping user experience (UX) principals in mind so it both looks great and works great.

User Research
  • Investigating how and why humans do what they do.
  • Includes research methods used to collect information from existing or potential users, such as user interviews, focus groups, monitored interviews, informal interviews, and quantitative surveys.
Personas
  • Fictional characters that UX designers create in order to highlight demographics, behaviors, needs, and motivations.
  • As a snapshot of the target audience, personas make it easier for designers to empathize with consumers throughout the design process.
User Scenario
  • Short stories that describe the why & how of how users use applications and websites.
  • User scenarios help apply user goals to the design of the product.
Journey Map
  • A diagram that explores the multiple (sometimes invisible) steps taken by consumers as they engage with the service.
  • Allows designers to frame the consumer’s motivations and needs in each step of the journey, creating design solutions that are appropriate for each.
  • Can utilize inputs from user interviews, customer service, and sales.
User Flow
  • A visual representation of the user’s flow to complete tasks within the product.
  • It’s the user perspective of the site organization, making it easier to identify which steps could be improved or redesigned.
Sketching, Wireframing & Prototyping
  • Sketching is a quick way of visualizing a new interface by using pen and paper. Sketches are useful for validating product concepts and design approaches with both team members and users.
  • A wireframe is a visual guide that represents page structure, as well as hierarchy and key elements. Useful for discussing ideas with team members and clients, and to assist the work of designers and developers.
  • A prototype is a simulation of a product’s navigation and features, commonly using clickable wireframes or layouts. It’s a quick and dirty way to test and validate a product before fully developing it.
User Testing
  • A one-to-one research interview in which the user is asked to perform a series of tasks in a prototype or a product.
  • Validates and collects feedback of flows, design and features.
