Adding Hyperlinks in InDesign: A Step-by-Step Guide

Enhancing User Experience with Interactive Hyperlinks: InDesign Tutorial on Linking URLs and Email Addresses

Learn how to add hyperlinks to your web page, validate the URL's, link to an email address, and add hyperlinks to various icons on your page. This in-depth guide will take you through each step, providing examples and tips for a smoother process.

Key Insights

  • The process of adding hyperlinks to a webpage involves selecting the text frame, typing in the URL, and checking whether the URL is valid or not through the use of color-coded icons.
  • You can also add a hyperlink to an email address along with a predefined subject line, and validate it the same way as with a URL.
  • The guide also discusses how to add hyperlinks to various icons on your page, such as mail and map icons, and how to validate their functionality.

In this video, we'll be adding hyperlinks to our Page 4. So let's begin first by selecting our URL. If we select this Text Frame here, we can add a hyperlink by going to the right-hand side and selecting Hyperlinks.

From here, we simply need to type in our URL, or we can go to the bottom and go to Create New Hyperlink. We'll select URL, and in this case, we can type in whatever URL we'd prefer. I'm going to use vdci.edu. However, feel free to use whatever you'd prefer, and we'll click OK.

And once we do this, we'll see that we have a green icon on the right-hand side showing us that this URL, in fact, works. If we click it, we can see that our internet browser takes us to this website. InDesign will automatically be able to determine whether the URL is valid or not.

So, for instance, we select Domus Interior Design, our logo, and add a hyperlink to this. We can add New Hyperlink, and we'll type in domus.url and hit OK. And we'll see that it's red, showing us that the URL is not available.

When it tries to pull it up, it doesn't work. Instead, we'll change this by double-clicking it, and again for this one, we can type vdci.edu and hit ENTER, and we'll see that it's green and under vdci.edu hyperlinks. Let's add a couple more.

First, we'll select our mail icon, and in this case, rather than adding a hyperlink, we're going to go to Link To: Email. From here, we simply need to add an email address. Feel free to add whatever email address you'd prefer.

And in this case, we can also add a subject line. This will be the subject line that comes up in the email that you're sending to this address: “Interested in additional class.”

And we can click OK. When we do this now, we'll see that we have the mail icon, and if we select this, our mail browser will pop up within our computer. We can close this out, and let's add two more hyperlinks.

For our map icon, we'll add a hyperlink, and again, feel free to add whatever you'd prefer. And again, for our final phone icon, we'll add a hyperlink and click OK. And in this case, again, we've gotten a red URL, and this shows us that the link isn't valid.

Instead, if we go to the actual staff page here, we'll see that it's vdci.edu/about/staff. We can copy this, hitting CTRL+C, and instead, we'll replace our URL, hitting CTRL+V, and click OK. We'll see that this works, and we've now completed our page for hyperlinks.

If we'd like to add any additional hyperlinks throughout our pages, we can do so. For example, we'll add this to our front logo, adding the hyperlink vdci.edu, or whatever you'd prefer, and hit ENTER. And we'll see that the frame around now shows us there's a hyperlink, and there's also an animation.

Now that we've completed our hyperlinks, let's save our work by hitting CTRL+S on the keyboard to save. And in the next video, we're going to discuss publishing.

See you there!
