The city of Boston has a population of about 650,000, while there are close to 4.9 million people in the entire Boston metropolitan area. This city is a tech hub and pays above-average salaries for IT jobs. Cloudwards recently analyzed cities across the United States and compiled a list of “The Top Tech Cities in the US, ” based on factors like the tech community, innovation, entrepreneurship, career opportunities, and livability. It placed Boston in the number eight spot, ranking it particularly high for career and education opportunities, and innovation and entrepreneurship.
In its Scoring Tech Talent 2024 report, which ranks cities in terms of their tech talent, CBRE places Boston in the seventh spot. It finds that the Boston tech market employs more than 169,000 people. About 78,000 work in software development and programming, and about 53,000 in jobs related to computer support, databases, and systems. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also provides information about the Boston IT workforce. It finds that Boston is the fifth-largest employer of Information Security Analysts in the country, employing about 4,800 people. Boston also employs about 4,600 Computer Network Architects and 1,800 Computer Network Support Specialists, according to the BLS.
According to “Boston’s People and Economy, ” a report on the Boston government website, this city is the tenth largest metropolitan area in the United States. It states that Boston’s largest employers are: health care and social assistance (about 18% of the workforce), professional, scientific, and technical services (14%), finance and insurance (12%), government (9%), and educational services (8%). IT professionals are needed in all these sectors.
There have been some IT layoffs in Boston in the post-COVID-19 period, however, many experts believe that opportunities will remain in the future. Nationally, most IT jobs are expected to see rapid growth over the next decade. The BLS posts growth predictions for many different IT fields. It expects 33% growth for Information Security Analysts, 6% for Computer Support Specialists, 17% for Software Developers, and 13% for Computer Network Architects. The average U.S. job growth rate is only 4%.
Prosum, a tech staffing and recruiting company, recently published a report titled “Tech Hub Updates: Regional IT Hiring Trends in LA, Phoenix, Denver and Greater Boston.” In their discussion of Boston trends, the authors find that hiring trends in this city are positive. They state, “Boston finds itself a tech hotspot where the most recent job reports are placing the metro in the top 10 cities for tech job postings.” They explain that one factor that keeps the tech ecosystem strong in Boston is the presence of its many renowned schools, stating, “[These] universities… place a strong emphasis on STEM subjects. This is one of the main factors that drive the amount of technological innovation, investment, and start-ups that plant their roots in the city.”
