V School uses a mastery-based curriculum for its two courses in web development and UX/UI design, allowing students to progress through the curriculum as they master each concept. The school offers a range of full and partial scholarships to students to help fund the cost of tuition.

V School takes a unique approach to tech education. Rather than committing to a set amount of time or a requisite number of learning modules, students of V School continue learning until they land a job, and beyond. Michael Zaro founded the school in Provo, UT, in 2013. Originally called Coding Campus, the school rebranded to V School when it expanded its Utah footprint in 2016, honoring Zaro’s origins with the Verisage software company. That same year, V School established one of the first coding bootcamps in the Middle East in cooperation with Al-Makassed University of Beirut, serving women and Syrian refugees living in Lebanon. The school also prides itself on working with refugees locally in Utah.

V School’s main campus is today located in Salt Lake City. The school operates out of a historic building, shared with several other tech businesses, in the heart of downtown SLC. V School also has a virtual campus for its 100% online instruction.

What Classes Are Available?

V School offers two full classes, one in full stack web development and the other in UX/UI design. Students in the web development course learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as servers, databases, and authentication. In the UX/UI design course, students learn the essentials of visual design and usability, as well as the principles of user research and the psychology behind the design. They also gain experience in prototyping, wireframing, and digital product design. In addition to these two courses, V School hosts a short, free Intro to Tech course available for students interested in picking up the basics of web development or UX/UI design before committing to the full course.

Class Formats

V School’s two flagship courses are offered in a completely online format that combines asynchronous learning with live discussion and mentorship. With the guidance of a member of the school’s student support team, each student will develop a learning plan that suits their schedule. Because the V School curriculum is “mastery-based,” there is no universal schedule that students must adhere to. Instead, students can take as much or as little time as they need to demonstrate mastery of each module through the unit assignments. Students are, however, expected to check-in at daily “stand up” meetings, where they share what they have been working on with their fellow course enrollees and the class instructors. The school suggests spending 12 weeks on the program on a full-time schedule. Each course is divided into three “stages”: Skills, Experience, and Career. The Skills Stage involves active learning of new material and culminates with a capstone project and career development. In the Experience Stage, students practice their skills on projects for a real client while applying for jobs in the industry. V School students do not graduate until they land a job; once they secure industry employment, graduates can continue upskilling with the school.

Admissions Process

Applying to V School starts with a general inquiry, progressing to an interview and a skills test. Admissions are very competitive; in 2018, the school reported accepting just 11% of successful applicants. The admissions team looks for applicants whose career goals and learning styles work well with the school’s curriculum.

Pricing & Payment Options

V School does not advertise the cost of its programs. The school does participate in the GI Bill, and also offers competitive full scholarships for students from demographics that are underrepresented in the tech industry. Called “You Belong in Tech,” the program supports LGBTQ+ students, refugees, students of color, refugees, veterans, and women, as well as students who lack the financial resources to attend traditional bootcamps. The school also offers two additional dedicated full scholarships for military and veteran students and families, as well as a $4,000 Community Relief scholarship to support students impacted by COVID-19.

Career Support Services

The V School curriculum is entirely career-oriented. Students do not graduate until they have secured employment in their chosen industry, and they continue developing their experience on projects for V School clients until they land a full-time contract. The school also works with their “Digital Family,” a network of professionals from organizations like Adobe, Ancestry, Google, IBM, Walmart, and Workfront, to provide students with real-world mentorship, interview prep, and professional projects.

Alumni Outcomes

Graduates of V School now work at industry titans like Adobe, Google, and Workfront, as well as homegrown Utahan companies like Anonyome Labs and Utah Valley University. V School graduates hold positions in DevOps, mobile, and web development, as well as QA engineering and UX design. The school advertises that its graduates have an average employment rate of 86% and a median starting salary of $72,000.

What Do Students Say?

Students who have graduated from V School have lots to say about their experience in the school’s tech education programs. Many praise the school staff, from instructors to mentors, to career coaches for the motivating and supportive learning environment. One graduate said, “The instructors demonstrated their expertise in the field of technology, and are willing to go the extra mile” to help students struggling with concepts or running into problems in applied practice. Others appreciate how current the curriculum is and how helpful other support measures are for aiding students in successfully entering their careers. Another graduate mentioned that “the outcomes team is way more involved than what I've seen [in] other places,” describing the career coaches as “by my side all the way through when I accepted a job offer.” Some students observed that studying at V School requires a serious investment of students’ time. One student noted that while the learning schedule is flexible, the required “daily standups limit flexibility.” Another graduate emphasized that “learning software/web development and preparing for a career in said field is difficult and takes time, so you have to be willing to stay committed for at a bare minimum 3-6 months.” This is true of most career changes, however, and did not deter this student from investing in a V School education.
