Tech Elevator is a coding and career training program whose mission is to elevate people, companies, and communities. Tech Elevator offers intensive in-person and live virtual classes to help people and companies prepare for the next steps in their careers in database programming, web programming, and front end coding.

Founded in 2015, by software developers Anthony Hughes and David Wintrich, Tech Elevator has grown to become one of the leading coding bootcamps. The program focuses on practical coding skills, and its emphasis on career readiness and job placement through the nationally recognized Pathway Program sets the program apart.

Tech Elevator is proud of its success and values transparency. All results are audited by third parties and published through the Council on Integrity in Results Reporting (CIRR). Tech Elevator was one of the first to publish results through the CIRR and boasts transparency as one of its core values.

School Locations

Tech Elevator offers 14-week in-person intensive classes through both live online and in-person formats.

The course is offered face-to-face at Tech Elevator’s five campuses in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. Cohorts are offered in the spring and summer for in-person courses.

The National Live Remote program offers one spring and one fall cohort each year. The National Live Remote program also provides location-specific remote courses that connect students to recruiters and job coaches in their area. These cities include Charlotte, Chicago, Philadelphia, and more. Some of these location-specific National Live Remote programs have summer cohorts as well.

What Classes Are Available?

Tech Elevator offers a single coding bootcamp. For those looking for an intensive and comprehensive coding course, Tech Elevator’s course has high standards of entry.

The course is built on “pathways” for students to follow so that students can build and expand on their fundamentals. You’ll complete the course in this order:

Introduction to programming in Java or C#
Database programming with SQL
Building and consuming APIs
Web programming using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Front-end JavaScript frameworks (Vue.js)
Project-based code reviews lead by professional software developers

In your courses, you will work with a single instructor and a set cohort of other students. Courses are never larger than a 1:12 instructor to student ratio.

Class Formats

Tech Elevator’s bootcamp is offered two to three times per year in-person at one of their five campus locations, as well as online through the National Live Remote program. All classes, in-person and remote, are full-time for 14 weeks.

During the program, you’ll participate in daily lectures, group work, and individual projects. National Live Remote students utilize video conferencing, messaging tools, and doc sharing to collaborate. Students will also complete a final project under the supervision of a working software developer.

Admissions Process

Tech Elevator has a three-step admissions process: taking an aptitude test, submitting an application, and completing an interview. Each stage of the application process is meant to help you decide if the program is right for you, and if coding is your true future career path. Attending an info session is a helpful way to get started.

The aptitude test takes about 25 minutes to complete. You do not need to know how to code to take the aptitude test or enter the program. Instead, the aptitude test looks for your problem solving, pattern recognition, and logic skills; the basics for coding and development.

On the application, you’ll be asked about your job experience, motivations, and career goals. Tech Elevator accepts candidates from all job fields and encourages candidates who are looking to switch career paths to apply.

If the team thinks you’re a good fit, you’ll be asked to participate in an interview with a team member. The interview takes approximately 90 minutes.

Pricing & Payment Options

Tech Elevator’s coding bootcamp costs $15,950, but there are several options to fund your education. First, you can pay for the program upfront, which means you won’t have any costs after graduation and will avoid paying interest.

Ways to finance your education include:

Income Share Agreement: A personal contract with Tech Elevator. After a $2K deposit, you don’t owe any additional money until you graduate and are making at least $40,000 annually. You then pay back Tech Elevator at 10% of your yearly income.
Student Loans: Available through Ascent or Sallie Mae. Loans offer flexible terms, and interest rates and come with a grace period after graduation.
Workforce Grants: Location-specific grants are available in certain cities through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.
VA Benefits: If you’re a veteran, you can apply directly through the VA to use your GI Bill to fund your education in certain cities.
Scholarships: Tech Elevator has provided over $1 million in scholarship funding to over 135 students, according to Career Karma. Scholarships are location-specific, except for the Represent Tech scholarship, which is offered to historically underrepresented groups working in technology.

Career Support Services

Tech Elevator’s major path to success is its Pathway Program, but the program also offers additional support services to students and alumni.

The Pathway Program allows students to work 1-on-1 with career coaches, helping students with interview skills, job search skills, and building resumes. Coaches teach students how to look for jobs online, through platforms like LinkedIn, as well as how to build personal networks.

Tech Elevator also helps students schedule and prepare for interviews with the school’s hiring partners, and provides mentorship for those jobs. Instructors are also experienced in their field and are an important resource for students. Mentorship is available to alumni as well.

Alumni Outcomes

Tech Elevator reports a 95% graduation rate with a 90% job placement rate. Graduates have a median annual salary of $60,000. Students work as software developers, software engineers, application developers, program analysts, and more. Most grads find full-time, salaried positions.

Program success is location-dependent but remains high throughout all locations. Pittsburgh has the highest job placement rate with 98%, while Philadelphia graduates have the highest starting salary, of $83K. Comparatively, the Cleveland location has the lowest job placement outcome, with 87%. Four of the six programs have job placement rates over 90%.

Graduates from Tech Elevator have scored positions at major and local companies including JP Morgan and Chase, PNC Bank, GNC, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Progressive.

All results are reported through the CIRR for transparency.

What Do Students Say?

Students report overwhelmingly positive experiences with Tech Elevator on review sites like Switchup, Course Report, and Career Karma, with an average student approval rating of 4.9 out of 5. Tech Elevator was also selected as one of the Switchup Best Bootcamp winners for 2021.

Students cite their instructors’ dedication to student success and job placement outcomes as top reasons to take the bootcamp and say they felt extremely prepared to enter their new careers. Students loved the supportive environment and the ability to work on real projects with experienced software developers. One student noted, “ I couldn't be happier with the way TE was run and how much it prepared me for the job.”

On the downside, students mention that the intensity of the program is challenging, and it’s not possible to complete the program while working or taking any other courses. Several students claimed they spent over 40 hours per week on the course and working on assignments, and that the learning format can be difficult for those with different learning styles. Students describe the program as “grueling” and “not for the faint of heart.”
