Punch Code works with Skills Fund to offer financing options to remove barriers for students. They offer 12-week full-stack software engineering programs that teach students how to use tech like SQL, JavaSCript, react.js, and more. After graduation, students will be ready to begin a career as a Jr. Full-Stack Software Engineer.

PunchCode is a 12-week bootcamp for front-end web development. The school’s goal is to quickly and efficiently provide students with the skills they need to become full-time developers. PunchCode is provided by Tech Impact, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization with the mission of empowering communities to use technology to better their lives. PunchCode is a newer offering from Tech Impact; their first bootcamp courses began in 2018.

School Locations

The PunchCode program has one location in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada near the Arts District. Near the school, students can find several restaurants and options for public transportation. The school is also conveniently located close to the highway, which provides easier access for students who need to commute.

What Classes Are Available?

PunchCode offers one twelve-week bootcamp three times per year (Fall, Winter, and Spring). By the end of the bootcamp, students will be able to optimize designs for both desktop and mobile applications, and quickly develop website prototypes with eye-catching interfaces.

The first nine weeks are devoted to developing skills and increasing familiarity with different coding technologies and programming fundamentals. In the final three weeks, the focus shifts to career support and working on a capstone project. Students present their proposal for a capstone project during week nine and receive feedback from instructors; final projects are determined by the staff after all students have a chance to present their ideas.

Class Formats

PunchCode offers in-person instruction for all twelve weeks of the program. The program is full-time. Lectures are from 9 am to 12 pm Monday through Thursday, then students spend time in the lab from 1 pm to 5 pm. During lab time, students can schedule 1-on-1 time with an instructor or associate instructor as needed. Instructors are also typically available after-hours either on campus or via a designated Slack channel.

Admissions Process

To register for PunchCode’s bootcamp, students simply complete an application form to request to speak to a member of the admissions team. If you choose to move forward after speaking with an admissions representative, there are approximately 20 hours of pre-work that will need to be completed before classes begin. There are no interviews or placement tests required for admission.

While prior coding experience is not required, PunchCode recommends that prospective students familiarize themselves with beginner-level programming through CodeAcademy or CodeSchool. PunchCode also offers free crash courses with current instructors. These are introductory-level courses designed to help people determine whether a career in web development is a good fit.

Pricing & Payment Options

The 12-week program is offered at a rate of $12,900. There are no scholarships currently available, but PunchCode does offer financing options through Ascent and Climb Credit. Students who need a laptop can borrow one for the duration of the course at no cost.

Career Support Services

During the last three weeks of the bootcamp, PunchCode offers several career development workshops. These workshops include mock interviews with a member of the PunchCode staff, resume development with current talent recruiters or hiring managers, and skill development lectures on topics such as networking and professional development. Guest lectures and networking opportunities with active professionals are also offered throughout the bootcamp.

Alumni Outcomes

PunchCode is a relatively new program, so alumni outcome data is limited at this time. However, graduates do report an average annual salary of $55,000. Those who have completed this program have been offered employment at companies like RevUnit, TuneGo, and Prime Trust.

What Do Students Say?

Graduates of the PunchCode bootcamp have provided their feedback on several review websites. Since PunchCode is a newer program, not many reviews have been posted. However, the available feedback is overall positive. The instructors and teaching assistants are repeatedly praised as being knowledgeable, approachable, and caring. Some reviews state that the instructors regularly check up on former students to see how they’re doing and offer additional support if it is needed. Although the program is rigorous, students feel that concepts are explained understandably and that their instructors can effectively prepare them for a career. Several reviews also appreciated the robust and frequent networking opportunities offered by PunchCode. One student mentioned that PunchCode, “teaches you how to prosper in this close-knit community.”

The primary limitation noted by former students is that the program is only 12 weeks long. While this is ample time for a solid overview of web development, some students felt that they needed to fill gaps in their knowledge on their own time after completing the course.

This comprehensive full-stack software engineering bootcamp is available both full-time over 12 weeks or part-time over 24 weeks and provides students with the skills needed to become a junior full-stack software engineer. The course has a career-focused curriculum and covers numerous skills and topics, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, Node, SQL, React, Redux, and more. Toward the end of the bootcamp, students will work on a capstone project, where they will have the opportunity to apply all they've learned in the program. Students will also benefit from career preparation, like mock interviews, resume building and soft skill development in order to be well prepared to succeed after graduation.
