Constructor Academy began life as Propulsion Academy in 2016. Founded in Zurich and led by CEO Laurent Meyer, a business development manager, Propulsion Academy offered Switzerland’s first coding bootcamps. The school expanded in 2020, adding a second location in Germany. In 2021, Propulsion Academy was acquired by Schaffhausen Institute of Technology (SIT) as their tech bootcamp wing and rebranded while maintaining their signature programming and data science bootcamp course offerings. In 2022, SIT rebranded as Constructor, and SIT was rebranded as Constructor Academy. Constructor Academy has also added a UX/UI design course and continues to grow.

School Locations

Constructor Academy’s flagship location is in Zurich, in the tech hub Industriequartier neighborhood of the city. Conveniently located amid restaurants, grocery stores, and gyms, the school is very near public transportation and just a few blocks from the Josefwiese city park and the Migros Museum for modern art. The Munich campus is located in the Altstadt-Lehel borough of the city, near restaurants, museums, public transportation, and the Hofgarten.

Subjects Taught at Constructor Academy

Students at Constructor Academy can study a range of subjects, including cybersecurity, data science, web development, and UX/UI design, as well as blockchain, cloud computing, DevOps, and product development. What Classes Are Available?

The Applied Machine Learning class allows students to build on their Python skills and develop machine learning models to solve business problems. Students work with Pandas and tools like AWS, Flask, Matplotlib, Seaborn, and scikit-learn as they build end-to-end machine learning pipelines. Students in the Cloud Computing course advance their skills by learning FAAS, IAAS, and PAAS as well as Kubernetes. Product designers and managers expand their skill set in the Product Development course, learning about business strategies and Agile, product roles, and product design, delivery, testing, and launch. The DevOps course helps developers learn to scale and accelerate deployment of their products. Students learn concepts like Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) as well as continuous integration and delivery as they work with tools including Docker, Gitlab, Jenkins, and Prometheus. With the Python course, students gain a full understanding of the programming language and its applications such as data analysis and visualization, web scraping, and APIs and web development, and database management (with an introduction to SQL). Students with some previous programming experience can take the Blockchain course to better understand Bitcoin, cryptography, Ethereum, and smart contracts.

In the Full Stack web development bootcamp, students learn the front-end with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, adding on React and Redux before digging into the back-end with Python, Django, SQL, and Docker. Data Science bootcamp students get experience with statistics, Python, and SQL as they work with data visualization, deep learning, machine learning, and natural language processing as well as data engineering. The UX/UI Design bootcamp orients students to user research and user-centered design as students learn about accessibility, responsive design, user personas, wireframing, prototyping, and testing. In this course, students learn to design for mobile, web, and desktop applications. Cybersecurity Bootcamp students learn about threats, vulnerabilities, and exploitations and how to prevent them as they gain experience with both red and blue team testing, while the Cybersecurity on-demand course orients students to the field with instructions in threats, prevention, forensics, and audits and remediations. The school also offers a Full-Stack Intro course and a Data Science Intro course to prepare students to study those subjects.

Class Formats

Constructor Academy offers full-time and part-time courses, live online and in-person, as well as one full online cybersecurity course offered on-demand. The introductory courses are also offered on-demand. The majority of the course offerings run 6-8 weeks long, with the exception of Full Stack and Data Science bootcamps, which are 12 weeks on a full-time and 22 weeks on a part-time schedule; on-demand courses take 10-15 hours to complete. Most courses include hands-on projects (including group projects at times) for students to develop their understanding of course concepts and gain practical experience in course skills. Web development students also have the opportunity to work on projects for external clients. All students must supply their own computer. In-person courses typically have 10-20 students per cohort. Students in the on-demand cybersecurity course complete quizzes to demonstrate mastery of course concepts. All courses are taught in English.

Admissions Process

Applying to Constructor Academy starts with filling out an online application. Most courses have some level of prerequisites in programming, though frequently students are responsible for judging their own proficiency levels, which are not checked before registration. The exceptions are for the bootcamps, for which students will participate in both a personal interview and a technical interview or design challenge to determine suitability for admission into the program.

Pricing & Payment Options

Tuition for live classes at Constructor Academy runs from CHF 1’800 to CHF 11’400, depending on course length, location, and mode of instruction. The on-demand cybersecurity course costs US $350, and the on-demand introductory courses are completely free. Some courses and students are eligible for an Income Share Agreement through CHANCEN eG. The school also offers competitive partial scholarships for students applying from women++, as well as early-registration discounts.

Career Support Services

Career preparation is integrated into the Constructor Academy curriculum. Students work with career advisors for assistance in developing application materials and practicing interview skills. The school also hosts networking opportunities and holds hiring events.

Alumni Outcomes

Constructor Academy does not disclose data on student outcomes. The school does advertise that the “majority” of alumni enters careers or internships within three months of graduation.

Since its origins as Propulsion Academy, Constructor Academy alumni have been sharing reviews of their experiences learning at the school. Graduates praise the networking opportunities for students interested in working in Zurich. Students appreciate the course curriculum as well, with one graduate identifying that “[t]he format of the course makes you get your hands dirty[, ] which is essential to learning the key concepts” with practical applications. Several students shared that their bootcamp experience was very intense, and overwhelming at times. Some students wished that the bootcamps were longer so that they could feel more solid in their understanding by the time they graduated. However, previous students speak highly of the helpfulness of instructors and teaching assistants alike, with another graduate saying, “The atmosphere was very positive and supportive all the time, which is really precious to keep motivation up during the intense moments.”
