The school is an Autodesk and Adobe Authorized Training Center and its courses are certified by the Italian ANCCP Certification Agency. The in-person campus boasts a state-of-the-art computer laboratory where in-person students learn and practice new materials.

Since 1992, Ilas, the Accademia Italiana di Comunicazione Visiva, has been teaching Italian language classes in visual communication to the relatively underserved Naples area. The school is under the direction of G. Angelo Scognamiglio and Simona Mancini, and specializes exclusively in practical visual arts classes, the goal of which is to provide students with a professional education that will prepare them for careers in advertising, social media and graphic design.

The school holds a number of important certifications, beginning with meeting the International Organization for Standardization’s ISO9100 quality guidelines. In addition, the school is an Adobe Authorized Training Center (of which there are only nine in all of Italy) and an Autodesk Authorized Training Center. The school is also accredited by the Regi1Campania, which enables Ilas to confer recognized professional titles on the graduates of some of its longer courses. School Locations

Ilas is located at 45 Via Alcide de Gasperi, a few blocks from the Bay of Naples. The school is within walking distance of either the Università or Montesanto stops on the Metropolitan.

The school, spread across two floors, is extremely modern in what it has to offer students, including Apple computers at each workstation, a complete photographic studio with ultra-modern equipment and a second studio set up for both photography and video production. Students have commented on how modern the physical plant is, especially given that Naples is not one of Italy’s most modern cities.

Subjects Taught at Ilas

Ilas divides its classes into five departments: Advertising; 2D and 3D Graphics; Photography; Web and Video; and Adobe and Autodesk. The bulk of the school’s classes are taught part-time and run for 11 months, although some subjects are taught across a shorter span of time. Thanks to the part-time structure of the classes, curricula may be combined, resulting in such combinations as Advertising Art and Copy and Social Media, Graphic Design and Web Development, and Graphic Design and Photography. The classes that meet the certification requirements of the Regi1Campania are taught closer to full-time, although also across the span of nearly a year.

What Classes Are Available?

The one-year classes at Ilas are headlined by the 11-month Advertising Art and Copy course. A six-month follow-up class is also available.; Taught fully online (two lessons per week), it touches upon such topics as creating visual identity manuals, signage and the more advanced aspects of merchandising.

The Web Design and Front-end Development class meets three times a week (twice in-person and once online) for 11 months, with 30 supplementary lessons (live online and on- demand) and four workshops with established experts in the field. The three principal modules of the class consist of programming using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Bootstrap; UX/UI Design using Adobe software; and using WordPress to create and manage websites. Again, the option to take further online classes in Photoshop and Illustrator is included in the price of admission. A second-year course (85 lessons, both live online and on-demand) that focuses on programming with PHP and delves deeply into ecommerce is also available.

The Advertising Photography class lasts a full 12 months and consists of 89 in-person classes in the school’s photography studio and on location, plus 85 live online classes. The class covers lessons on the theory and technique of photography for advertising, shooting for fashion, still-life and beauty, and high-end photo retouching with Photoshop. The course also includes a workshop on photojournalism, online classes in the history of photography, and the customary Ilas workshops with established professionals in the field.

The school bills itself as the foremost social media academy of the Mezzogiorno ) and offers a social media and web marketing program. That course consists of 85 hours of in-person classroom teaching at the school’s Naples location, with a further 42 online lessons. That works out to three weekly lessons for a year, two live and one live online. Additionally, as part of the program, students may participate in the online advertising class (44 further lessons), and take part in classes (live online and on-demand) on topics including the history of advertising, basic Photoshop and basic Illustrator. For graphic designers and architects interested in the subject of 3D imaging, Ilas also teaches a 3D graphics class that concentrates on Autodesk’s Maya software. Consisting of 95 live in-person lessons, the course earns students Autodesk Advanced certification at its conclusion. Also included are 12 lessons in Pixologic Z-brush that teach students how to use that remarkable tool for 3D sculpture. For those who wish to specialize in that particularly versatile modeling device, Ilas also offers a six-month class (two classes per week) in Z-brush alone.

As mentioned above, many of these year-long classes can be combined into even more comprehensive offerings. Thus it is possible to take the advertising class along with the photography course, resulting in students taking 235 lessons spread across the same 12 months required to complete either course individually.

In addition to these year-long classes (which form the backbone of the Ilas course listing), Ilas offers briefer courses in narrower subjects. For example, there is a four-month class that trains advertising copywriters, and a three-month class in video editing using PremierePro. The school also offers classes in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, at both a beginner and an advanced level. These classes incorporate 14 lessons spaced over the course of a month. Even briefer courses in Dreamweaver and InDesign are also available through the school.

Last, but not least, are the courses approved by the Regione di Campania that confer degree-like titles on graduates. These titles are Advertising Graphic Technician (Tecnico Grafico Pubblicitario), Photographic Technician (Tecnico della Fotografia) and Web Designer, and they are recognized across Italy. Each of these programs lasts eleven months, and consists of 600 hours of instruction. These are divided between classroom instruction (300 hours), instruction in key competency areas established by the regional government and 240 hours spent in an internship.

Class Formats

Most courses of study offered by Ilas are hybrid classes combining in-person instruction at the school’s premises with online classes that can be live or can be on-demand e-learning sessions. Certain classes (the Photography course, for example) are conducted entirely in-person, while a number of classes are offered entirely online.

All necessities are furnished by the school, including up-to-date Apple computers with multiple monitors in the classrooms, and a large selection of digital cameras and related equipment in the photographic studio. Class sizes are small, but not as small as some other schools; the school’s classrooms seat approximately fifteen students each.

Some (but not all) the school’s classes include a final examination.

Admissions Process

Admission to the introductory level classes is open. Some of the advanced classes, on the other hand, have a preliminary examination to assure proper placement of students. Prospective students should be aware that the school requires a secondary diploma from its students and, with only a few exceptions, reserves most of its classes for students between the ages of 18 and 35.

Pricing & Payment Options

Pricing for Ilas’ classes is, unusually, priced by the month, even for the year-long classes. This, of course, makes paying for a lengthy course much easier for students seeking to improve their career prospects.

Every class has a €100 registration fee, which is waived for those who reserve their places well in advance. After this upfront payment, each class carries a monthly fee. As a general pattern, the more time spent learning live, the more expensive the class will be. Thus the Advertising Art and Copy class is priced at €220 (approximately $224) per month (a total cost of €2420), while the online version is priced at €100 ($101) per month. The graphic design class is priced at €320 ($325) per month (€3520 total cost), while the online advanced class carries a list price of €300 ($304) a month, half of which can be underwritten by one of a number of scholarships offered by the school. The photography year-long class, which meets entirely in-person, is priced at €350 ($355) a month (€3850 total). Social Media and Web Marketing is also priced at €350.

The combined year-long classes carry their own set of price tags, which represent a discount compared to the cost of the individual classes. Thus the combination of the Advertising Art and Copy class with the graphic design one costs €480 ($485), and, if one wishes to combine that further with the photography class, the monthly charge becomes €670 ($680). To quote a further example, the combination of the graphic design and photography classes costs €550 ($558) per month.

As for the briefer programs, the Adobe classes almost all cost €150 ($152) for the month they last. The sole exceptions are the InDesign basic class, which costs €200 ($203) and the three-month introduction to editing with Premiere Pro, which is priced at €250 per month(approximately $254). Note that these briefer classes do not incur the €100 registration fee encountered with the longer classes.

Career Support Services

Although Ilas assists in the career placement of its students, mentoring and career support services are not part of Ilas’ offerings. The school does, however, employ technology that makes it extremely easy for students to create their online portfolios and websites.

Alumni Outcomes

Ilas does not offer public figures as to its placement of students following their time with the school. It does, however, mention that it has been able to place some of its students with such prestigious firms as J. Walter Thompson, Allianz and Dolci Advertising.
