Grand Circus aims to make a quality coding education accessible to anyone. Founded in 2013, Grand Circus started as part of a revitalization project to infuse digital marketing talent into the city of Detroit. Since then, the school’s focus has shifted, while still maintaining its Michigander identity. Co-founder and CEO Damien Rocchi is the face of the school, which now offers software development courses primarily online. To lower the threshold for entering the tech industry, Grand Circus offers a range of scholarships and free coding camps for students. They also partner with high schools to help students develop coding skills before they graduate.

School Locations

At heart, Grand Circus is a Michigan institution. They opened their first location in Detroit in 2013 and expanded into Grand Rapids three years later. Now, Grand Circus delivers the quality of an in-person coding camp via live remote classes, while still partnering with on-site organizations in Michigan to teach software development in local communities.

Subjects Taught at Grand Circus

Grand Circus offers two main software development tracks both full-time and part-time. Students can choose to focus on either JavaScript or C# .NET in their coding bootcamp. The school also offers a part-time data engineering bootcamp, as well as a menu of free and low-cost introductory workshops.

What Classes Are Available?

Grand Circus has two primary course offerings: their Full Stack JavaScript Bootcamp and their Full Stack C# .NET Bootcamp. The school offers information sessions to help students choose between tracks. Previous coding experience is not required before taking either course. Grand Circus also offers their Data Engineering Bootcamp for students who have a year of programming experience, whether from taking one of their other bootcamps or from other study or experience. For complete beginners, Grand Circus runs several coding workshops, including Intro to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; Intro to C# .NET; and a free Intro to Coding class.

Class Formats

All of Grand Circus’ regular offerings meet live online in Eastern time. Both full stack bootcamps are offered full-time and part-time. Full-time courses meet for 14 weeks, Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm. Part-time full stack courses run for 28 weeks, 6:30 pm to 10 pm, on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. All work is synchronous except for the first two weeks of these courses, which must be completed on the student’s own time and approved before the student can join the synchronous meetings. The data engineering bootcamp is offered only as a part-time class and has a shorter schedule: 26 weeks, meeting 6:30-8:30 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

All students will work with career coaches and alumni mentors and will interface with prospective employers. Students also have the opportunity to join an affinity group for the duration of the course; previous groups have included dedicated support communities for LGBTQIA+ students, people of color, and women. Each course ends with a final group project that students will include in their professional portfolio as they enter the job market.

The coding workshops are all live online as well, and Grand Circus offers a range of available dates and times. The free introductory coding workshop is a single two-hour class, while Intro to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and Intro to C# .NET both meet for a total of six hours over two consecutive evenings.

Admissions Process

To apply for admission to any of the bootcamps, prospective students will fill out an application form. The form includes simple contact, demographic, and work history questions, as well as two short essay questions about the student’s previous experience with coding and technology and what the student plans to do with the skills they learn in their bootcamp experience. Registering for the coding workshops is as simple as securing a virtual seat with an Eventbrite ticket.

Pricing & Payment Options

Tuition for each of Grand Circus’s bootcamps is priced at $11,750. The school offers several non-competitive bootcamp scholarships of $1,750 for women students, LGBTQIA+ students, students of color, and veteran students, as well as additional competitive scholarships for women, genderqueer, and nonbinary students who are Michigan residents. There is also a discount for early bootcamp registration. For students who need help financing their education, Grand Circus has a shortlist of recommended loan companies.

The Intro to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and Intro to C# .NET workshops each cost $75. The Intro to Coding workshop is completely free to all participants.

Career Support Services

During their time at Grand Circus, students participate in a range of career readiness activities with the support of a portfolio of career mentors. Alumni, employers, skills mentors, and career coaches all work with students to help them identify and prepare for their ideal careers. Students will practice presenting their abilities at mock job interviews and learn other soft skills necessary for long-term success on the job.
