The Colaberry School of Data Science initially began as a small-scale program that provided veterans with tech skills free of charge. Over time, interest in the program blossomed. Due to this increased demand, the program’s founders officially opened the Colaberry School of Data Science in Plano, Texas in 2012. Anyone can now enroll and register for courses.

Colaberry offers bootcamps that provide students with technical skills in data analytics and data science. In 2014, the school also added a Job Readiness training phase. This phase provides students with the opportunity to apply their technical skills and build a portfolio, improve their communication skills, and practice interviewing.

School Locations

The main branch of the Colaberry School of Data Science is located outside of Dallas in Plano, Texas. Onsite courses are held at this branch. The school also has a second branch located in Boston, Massachusetts. This branch is located in Chinatown, near Tufts University, and opened in 2014.

What Classes Are Available?

Colaberry has two phases for its Data Analytics and Data Science bootcamps. In the first “Technical Training” phase, students learn the basic skills required to succeed in a career as a Data Analyst or Data Scientist. After completing Technical Training, students move on to the Career Accelerator Program to practice applying these skills to real-world scenarios.

The technical courses for the Data Analytics Bootcamp range from 6- to 12-weeks long. In these courses, students learn about SQL Server, SSRS, and SSIS. For the Data Science Bootcamp, students can enroll in three eight-week-long technical training sessions. During these sessions, students learn about Python essentials and data handling, the foundations of Machine Learning (ML), and regression models and ML algorithms.

After mastering technical skills, students can enroll in the Career Accelerator Program, which lasts for 12+ weeks. In this phase, students apply their skills to real-world projects and develop a portfolio that can be used for job applications. They also have the opportunity to receive feedback on their resumes and prepare for job interviews.

Class Formats

Colaberry provides both online and in-person bootcamp formats for Data Analytics; however, the school’s website does not provide specific information about how these formats may differ from one another. It appears that the Data Science bootcamp is only available online.

Students who enroll in either bootcamp must complete one technical training module before they can move on to the next one. There are two classes held per week and students should aim to commit approximately 15-20 hours to lessons and coursework each week.

Admissions Process

Colaberry does not have an involved admissions process. The school’s FAQ page states that in order to participate in the program, you must sign up and create an account for free. Once you have created an account, you can view and enroll in upcoming courses.

Students who click the “Apply Now” button on their website will be directed to a page that allows them to create an account. To participate in a course, a student must have access to an 8GB RAM computer with a Windows operating system, a computer camera, and a microphone.

Pricing & Payment Options

The cost for the technical training portion of the bootcamps varies based on the specific program. For Data Science, students can anticipate spending $1,500 for each of the three eight-week-long sessions. Alternatively, students can pay $4,000 for all three sessions in one payment. Technical training for the Data Analytics program is $1,999 upfront for each session.

The cost of the Career Accelerator phase of the bootcamp is $12,000 for both programs when paid up-front. Students can also register for a deferred payment plan, which costs $15,000 in total. Any student who opts for deferred payment must pay $250 per month while the student is actively enrolled in the bootcamp. Upon graduation, the student must pay 15% of their monthly salary to Colaberry until the loan is paid off.

In addition to payment plans, Colaberry offers special discounts on their financing options page, such as early bird specials. Additionally, scholarships are available for active or retired U.S. Military. These scholarships cover 100% of technical training tuition, up to 50 total scholarships.

Career Support Services

Colaberry provides 1-on-1 mentorship opportunities with industry professionals for those students who enroll in its courses. Mentors help students practice their interview skills and provide job coaching and feedback.

In addition to mentorship opportunities, students develop a portfolio of work to showcase their skills when applying for jobs post-bootcamp. Upon securing a job, Colaberry provides graduates with on-the-job support for up to a year after they graduate from the program.

Alumni Outcomes

Colaberry does not provide a detailed accounting of alumni outcomes. The school does share that the average starting salary for students post-program is $80,000. The more than 5,000 graduates of the bootcamps have gone on to work for companies such as Google, Bank of America, Facebook, Microsoft, Citi, and JPMorgan.

With a 4.73 rating on Course Report, the graduates of Colaberry’s bootcamps are largely satisfied with the program. Students find that the classes are fun and interesting and allow them “to go from complete beginner to expert” in a short amount of time. Reviewers were particularly pleased with the great teachers and “readily available staff.”

While the courses are self-paced, some students mentioned that the bootcamps still felt fast-paced. Despite being difficult and time-consuming, however, most reviewers recommend the program for anyone interested in pursuing a career in Data Science or Data Analytics.
