CodeBoxx offers a special payment arrangement for its in-person bootcamps – you do not pay tuition until you get a job – and then the tuition is 20% of the first year’s salary. CodeBoxx was founded by CEO Nicolas Genest in 2017. Before setting up the school, Genest studied Business Analytics at Harvard University and had 15 years of experience in the field. He worked at Pfizer, heading up a team of developers for web applications. In 2020, he was recognized by Insights Success Magazine as one of the Top Ten CEOs to watch in 2020. School Locations

CodeBoxx has two campuses: one in Quebec City and the other in Montreal. Both campuses are located close to several public transportation options. They are also approximately a 15-minute drive to an international airport.

What Classes Are Available?

CodeBoxx currently has one bootcamp available. This 14-week program teaches one core theme per week and a deliverable assignment on the corresponding theme is due at the end of each week. CodeBoxx suggests that students will spend a minimum of 50 hours per week to be successful and satisfactorily complete assignments.

The first eight weeks of the program help students build their fundamental skills by completing assignments for a fictitious company. These assignments will help students understand real-world business situations and the creative problem-solving that is required to do quality work. At the end of this portion of the program, students will be proficient in languages like Python, JavaScript, CSS, and C#. They will also learn within both Ruby on Rails and .Net frameworks.

The final six weeks of the course are geared toward more specific skills depending on the specialized areas students are hoping to enter. These final weeks also add the languages of Solidarity and Dart to a student’s knowledge base. Mock job interviews are also included in this section of the program since students will be preparing to enter the workforce in a few short weeks.

Class Formats

Students who attend CodeBoxx can do so in person at either of their two campuses or they can complete the full-time bootcamp remotely. Students who attend in-person classes can participate in a Laptop Loan Program through the school as well. The remote program ensures students have access to their mentors via video conferencing.

One unique aspect of the class format at CodeBoxx is that there are no lectures. Each student is paired with a mentor that will guide them through the program. Students will complete assignments in teams of five to six people. CodeBoxx also employs a student ranking system: in addition to the scores from the deliverable assignments, students are scored on their business soft skills such as collaboration, reliability, and attitude every week.

Admissions Process

CodeBoxx has a very unique admissions process. The first step for interested students is to complete the registration form. The submission of this form reserves your place in an upcoming cohort. The confirmation of your place is dependent upon the completion of the rest of the enrollment steps.

The bulk of the enrollment process is a two-week selection program called “Genesis.” The beginning of these two weeks is made up of activities like personality quizzes and tests to determine the starting base of your knowledge. Note that these quizzes are mandatory, but students are never disqualified from admission based on their results.

Genesis also contains coding exercises designed to see if applicants have the motivation and determination to complete the rigorous bootcamp. This offers an opportunity for students to get a better idea if coding is truly for them. Students who complete Genesis will be admitted to the bootcamp; candidates who are not can receive a full refund of their deposit. Generally, 60-70% of people who participate in Genesis are accepted to the program.

Pricing & Payment Options

CodeBoxx does not require tuition payments until graduates are hired. From there, they have a few different repayment options. If a student becomes a freelancing developer, an invoice of $14,000 will be issued. Students who are hired by an outside company will be sent an invoice that is the equivalent of 20% of their first year gross salary.

The third option is another aspect of CodeBoxx that makes it very unique. This school has an internal developing group called Boxx Solutions, which can hire graduates for up to one year after graduation. Boxx Solutions pays its employees $46,000/year for a minimum of 49 weeks. From here, students are assigned coding projects that will help them apply the concepts they learned in the bootcamp and also sharpen their skills while they continue to search for outside employment. Students employed by Boxx Solutions will also be sent an invoice equal to 20% of their base salary.

Career Support Services

Because the CodeBoxx program is structured like a workplace rather than a classroom, career support is a consistent theme throughout the entire bootcamp. Students are repeatedly reminded of important business soft skills and given assignments that will mimic those they would receive in a real job. This learning style gives students a definite advantage in the job market.

Alumni Outcomes

In 2020, graduates reported an average annual salary of $47,000. Graduates who are not hired by Boxx Solutions have gone on to work for Canadian companies like La Capitale, CGI, and Coveo.
