Build Carolina (Bc Corp.) is a South Carolina nonprofit that offers full stack web development training through its Carolina Code School program. The company’s goal is to build South Carolina’s tech community through education, career support, and networking.

Launched in March 2018 under the tutelage of Executive Director Lelia King, Carolina Code School trains and mentors tech professionals through its Web Development Immersive bootcamp and part-time coding coursework. The program was founded with career development in mind, and alumni have gone on to work both in the local community and beyond. Students from around the world have graduated and found work mainly as Web Developers and Software Engineers, and the school rates highly among many of them.

Carolina Code School’s single in-person location is in the NEXT Innovation Center in downtown Greenville, a state-of-the-art facility offering over 60,000 square feet of specialized space. The location offers 24/7 access and the most up-to-date training tools available.

Carolina Code School offers web development and engineering training comprising a range of subjects. The school’s two main courses are a full-time Web Development Immersive and a part-time Front End Engineering class.

What Classes Are Available?

The Web Development Immersive is Carolina Code School’s primary offering. This comprehensive 12-week certificate program is open to beginners with no coding experience, but it is geared toward students who want to learn all the tools needed to become Full Stack Developers. Training includes front end web development programming languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and the React JavaScript library, as well as back end training in Python, Django, and Django REST. Students also get training in Git, APIs, and databases. All graduates of the Web Development Immersive receive a certificate of completion, and the school also offers four weeks of additional web development curriculum as part of its Career Support program.

For those who wish to learn but are unable to commit to a full-scale bootcamp, Carolina Code School also hosts a part-time Foundations Front End Engineering course open to beginners. It consists of seven evening classes over two weeks and delivers introductory material on coding. Students work closely with programmers to learn about software development and how to build a functional, interactive website. Those seeking to gain practical experience beyond the soft skills level are encouraged to apply for the full stack immersive instead.

Admissions Process

Carolina Code School is currently accepting applicants for its courses. The admissions process is straightforward: applications are accepted on a rolling basis, which means students can apply at any time for upcoming classes.

To apply for the Web Development Immersive, go to the application page form. Here students are asked to provide contact info and answer questions such as, “How much programming experience do you have?” Applicants are encouraged to answer each question thoughtfully, in particular, “Why do you want to take this course?” The school can update applicants on the status of their application via text, with permission.

Pricing & Payment Options

The current tuition cost for the Web Development Immersive at Carolina Code School is $13,900 and the part-time Foundations Front End Engineering course is offered at $899.

Financing options are available. Because it is a nonprofit, Carolina Code School has partnered with several outside entities: LoanWell, which is comparable to a crowdfunding campaign; Climb Credit, a student lending company; and Ascent Funding, which provides three-year student loans with low-cost payments for the first five months.

While one 5-star reviewer reports “this is not going to be easy” and says he “struggled,” he also concludes “this course helped me change for the better.” Another 5-star reviewer, who went on to become a Web Developer, says, “It was challenging to say the least,” adding that both the experience and following career support were “amazing.”

Others felt that “some of the concepts of programming should be taken more slowly,” or that the immersive bootcamp was “too expensive.”
