User experience (UX) design refers to the aspect of the digital design process that is attentive to how users interact with an interface. Rather than accounting for how the interface looks, this part of the design process focuses on how it feels. No matter how hard they try, user interface designers can’t control how users interact with their designs, so it’s the UX designer’s job to conduct user research to determine how users respond to a given interface. They then collect this feedback, interpret the data, and present findings to designers and project managers, who can make more informed decisions based on those recommendations.
The term was coined by computer science professor David Norman in 1993 but has been integral to design almost as long as humans have created mass-market goods. Since the mid-20th century, there has been increased focus on how humans interface with computers, and the field of UX design has grown to address these interactions. Learning UX design means considering best practices for designing tools that allow people to interact with complex systems simply and accessibly. This is an important field, theoretically and practically, as more of our daily lives involve working directly with software.
While the term “user-friendly” gets bandied about, it’s important that a digital interface feels inviting and easy to use. “User-friendly” is vague enough to mean an interface is easy to understand, easy to navigate, or simply not confusing when interacting with elements. More than other aspects of UX design, this process requires rigorous user testing to determine if a design is user-friendly enough for release. UX designers can’t judge how inviting a web application is without letting users test prototypes. They’re responsible for gathering feedback and passing it to designers who can make appropriate changes.
Web applications also need to be designed with accessibility in mind. This includes ensuring images have alt-text and making applications accessible to users with limited mobility. Building accessible web applications is crucial, especially for applications that communicate vital information. Accessible design also means accounting for all skill and comfort levels. Government agencies, for example, need to ensure their webpages are accessible to users who may have rarely used a computer, and it’s the UX designer’s job to make this a reality.
An important design goal is ensuring a web interface functions properly across devices. As services move online, users must access them easily from any device. Responsive design principles ensure applications run smoothly on various devices. Sometimes this means adjusting content for different resolutions; other times it requires reworking the interface to avoid overcrowding on a smartphone. This is one of several principles UX designers must consider.
User experience designers are vital to every modern web project since an intuitive interface is essential. Digital marketplaces are crowded, and users can instantly find dozens of options. This means users have little patience for confusing interfaces. A beautiful webpage is useless if no one uses it because it’s not well designed. Skilled UX designers are in high demand as organizations seek competitive advantage through easy-to-use sites.
While many UX designers work for companies, UX researchers take a broader approach to improving user experience. They develop theories and frameworks and establish best practices for testing. Their goal is to help designers build a more accessible internet, one interface at a time. UX designers simplify daily internet use for diverse users. The work of a UX designer is to make the internet more accessible and useful, which appeals to those who wish to contribute.
Among design fields, UX designers spend the most time with users and on design teams. Thus, successful UX designers need interpersonal skills to balance diverse interests. They must communicate with users and translate feedback into actionable insights. They also need to present findings to stakeholders and adjust the design accordingly. Many UX designers work on large teams, requiring strong collaboration skills. Experienced UX designers can hone these skills to become team leaders.
Much of a UX designer’s work focuses on user behavior testing. UX designers regularly use various research methods, including A/B testing, focus groups, anonymous surveys, and one-on-one interviews. UX design is unique among related disciplines because it centers on data collection and analysis rather than creative design. However, this analysis is often more qualitative than quantitative because designers work with human responses rather than numbers.
Another key aspect of UX design is learning to collect and analyze user feedback. Since collected data is often qualitative, it can be harder to parse and interpret. UX designers need to translate feedback into productive, actionable insights for designers and developers. Since users identify problems better than solutions, UX designers must present feedback in ways that address concerns and improve the design, even when feedback is unclear or contradictory.
UX designers spend less time on UI layout tools than their graphic design and UI colleagues. Instead, they focus on user testing and data collection. However, they still need to understand tools like Figma for usability testing. Importantly, Figma lets users build working prototypes, improving the testing process. Figma also lets designers modify designs on the fly to better gauge user response.
Good communication skills are important for UX designers. UX designers must explain a product to users in plain English, then translate feedback for developers, clients, marketers, and other stakeholders. For UX designers, communicating with individuals of varying technical expertise is essential. Interpersonal skills are also important, as designers need patience and the ability to work with diverse user samples to ensure broadly applicable results.
Before diving into UX, clarify the difference between user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design. Think of UX as the experience of a road trip and UI as the stoplights, signs, and lane markings that guide it. The appearance of stoplights, signs, and lane markings had to be designed (like a website’s UI), but how they affect driving defines the user experience (UX). UI design focuses on the appearance of an interface, including how elements appear, what effects are used, and how visuals communicate meaning.
These are practical considerations, since user interaction often differs from designers’ expectations. The sign that tells drivers the speed limit is an example of a UI element; the actual speed limit, designed to encourage safe driving, is a UX element. Together, these elements make the road far less dangerous and chaotic. Without a speed limit, there’d be nothing to guide behavior, and without signage, drivers wouldn’t know the limit. Though distinct, they create a functional system.
UX designers are responsible for creating experiences that are easy, intuitive, and meet users’ needs. (UI designers focus on visual elements such as graphics, typography, color, and composition.)

A good first step is researching existing users and creating personas. UX designers may conduct interviews and contextual research (observing users in their everyday environments).
After defining the product and experience, designers move to wireframes, prototypes, and mockups.

Wireframes show where content goes and how screens function. They’re often drawn by hand or in grayscale on a computer. Designers make major layout and functionality changes at this stage because it’s inexpensive. After the wireframe phase, companies either send wireframes to developers or move to prototypes.
The prototype is an interactive version without final UI design, letting designers test ideas quickly. It shows navigation paths and animations. UX designers may demonstrate prototypes to clients and conduct user testing with them. Many UI decisions happen after prototyping. Prototypes can be built with Figma, Sketch, Photoshop, and InVision.
A mockup is a high-fidelity, static representation. It’s where designers choose colors, typography, and other visuals. Designers typically only create mockups once features and flow are finalized, using Figma, Sketch, or Photoshop.
User testing is essential. UX designers demonstrate prototypes to users to uncover pain points and suggest improvements. Sometimes users miss buttons or request new features. Common testing methods include:
UX designers make product adjustments based on research. Changes may include screen layout, feature additions or removals, and interface tweaks to improve intuitiveness. These adjustments vary by project and only become clear after testing. While principles may guide designers broadly, every interface poses unique challenges.
Though UX and UI are distinct, they overlap, and smaller teams may combine roles. In a 10-person company, a UX or UI designer may handle research, design, and development. In a large firm, UX designers often specialize (research, testing, etc.), while UI designers focus on visuals. Consider the work you enjoy when choosing between UX and UI.
