The Invisible Edit: Making Cuts Feel Natural with Michael Venzor

Free Seminar Live Online

This class explores why video editing is often called “the invisible art” and how great editors make cuts feel natural and seamless. Drawing on core editing theory, including ideas popularized by Walter Murch, the session focuses on why cuts work when they are motivated, timed, and visually coherent. Through clear examples of both effective and ineffective edits, students will learn practical techniques for hiding cuts so the audience stays immersed in the story instead of noticing the edit.

This class includes a dedicated 30 minutes of Q&A directly with Michael Venzor.

What You'll Learn

  • Understand why video editing is considered “the invisible art” and how noticeable cuts can break immersion.
  • Use motivated edits, such as eyeline matches and audio cues, to create a clear reason for every cut.
  • Apply eye trace principles to keep the viewer’s focus in the same place before and after a cut.
  • Hide cuts by cutting on motion and letting movement mask transitions between shots.
  • Align cuts with rhythm, including music, dialogue cadence, or natural action, to create smoother pacing.
  • Create visual continuity using match cuts that bridge time, space, or action.
  • Avoid common editing mistakes by understanding rules such as the 180-degree rule, the 30-degree rule, and the use of L-cuts and J-cuts in dialogue scenes.

Who It's For

  • Beginner to intermediate video editors who want their cuts to feel smoother and more natural.
  • Editors working in any NLE, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, or similar software.
  • Creatives interested in foundational editing principles like motivated edits, eye trace, rhythm, and match cuts.
  • Editors who want to avoid common continuity and dialogue-editing mistakes by understanding core editing rules.
