In computer parlance, a library isn’t a repository of books, but, rather, of code. Blocks of code (sometimes called components) that do various (often basic) tasks are stored and made available to programmers to spare them having to write the same code over and over again when someone’s already written it out. Just as construction companies can buy steel girders without having to mine the iron and can purchase cut lumber instead of having to plant trees, libraries make it possible for coders not to have to build every program they write out of primary materials.
Among the JavaScript libraries, one of the most useful—and perhaps the best known—is React.js. React provides blocks of code that help create user interfaces and save programmers enormous amounts of time in the process. It was created by engineers at Facebook/Meta, the company that has kept the library going since 2013. Anyone working closely with JavaScript will need to be well acquainted with React. As 97% of all websites employ JavaScript, and 75% of those make use of React components, any Front-end Developer has to know the library and its many uses.
Knowing React can be invaluable in forging a career in web development, or, through its close relative React Native, in iOS/Android development as well. React isn’t learned in a vacuum, however: as it is a JavaScript library, to someone who doesn’t know JavaScript, it’s about as useful as the Reykjavik Public Library would be to someone who doesn’t speak Icelandic. Knowledge of JavaScript in turn presupposes knowing HTML and CSS, but, if you put all that together, you end up with the basic requirements for any Front-end Developer. JavaScript is even being used more and more for the back ends of websites and anywhere else interactivity is required such as the so-called Internet of Things. Thus there is no shortage of roles into which those acquainted with React and all the programming languages upstream from it can fit, especially in a growing economy such as that to be found in Northern Florida.
Florida’s largest city can offer Front-End Developers annual salaries around $90,000, while Full Stack Developers (who are capable of programming both the front and back ends of websites) receive annual salaries that average out closer to $100,000. Mobile Developers can earn even more: Indeed lists their annual average salary as more than $106,000.
The most logical first place to look for a class in React would be at a local school specializing in tech education. Unfortunately, no Jacksonville school currently offers React courses, but that doesn’t leave students completely high and dry. There is always the option of taking an online class, which offers the advantage of being able to be taken from anywhere: all you need is a stable internet connection and you’ll never have to worry about missing a class meeting.
Virtual education is an excellent way to learn React. There’s no commute to school, no classroom distractions, wider course selection from a wide variety of online providers, and the ability to interact with a live teacher in real time.
