Review and Relink: Structural Modeling with BIMarchitecture

Establishing Model Connectivity and Incorporating Architectural Changes: Structural Modeling Progression

Explore the detailed process of working with a new architectural model and a structural model, including how to open, review, and track progress within these models. The article also offers valuable insights on how to relink an architectural model and identify any changes made.

Key Insights

  • The article introduces the process of opening a new structural model and reviewing its components, such as columns, walls, concrete slabs, and steel beams.
  • It instructs on how to navigate to a specific level within the model, in this case, level zero, and how to relink the architectural model from this point.
  • The article explores how to identify and analyze modifications in the model, for example, the addition of a new room with windows and doors.

Hello, and welcome to BIM Structure. Let's get started. As you can see on your screen, we have downloaded the architectural model and our new structural model.

Please enter your name here so we can track your progress as we move through this coursework. Okay, let's go ahead and open our structural model. Select it.

Click Open. And here we have our new model. Let's take a look at what we've done.

We've got our structural model with Columns, Walls, Concrete Slabs, Concrete Footings, Steel Beams, Steel and Concrete Deck, Glulam Beams, Wood Joists, and Plywood Sheathing Floors. In our lateral system, we have Brace Frames and Moment Frames. Since we’re in our 3D view, let’s go to the 3D cube.

Let’s go to Home. Yes, there it is. Let's take a look and review our model.

What we're going to do is we're going to work through our new model, and the first place we want to go is to Level Zero. As you can see here, we have our basic model that we had previously laid out. What we want to do now is relink the architectural model and identify any changes that have been made.

Okay, the first thing we want to do is go to the Manage tab > Manage Project panel > Manage Links tool. Select it. As you can see here, the BIM architectural model is not loaded.

What we want to do is relink it to our model. So what we'll do is we'll select it and review our options. We have Remove, which we don’t want to use.

We don’t want to add another one, and we do want to reload it—but we want to reload it from a specific file location. So let's select Reload From, and here we have our architectural model. Select it and click Open.

Here we have a redundant message because we are working in BIM 342, so it will not open it, but it will insert the architectural model into our project. Let's close this and click OK. Let's take a look at some of the changes.

As we can see, we have an equipment vault here, and it looks like a new room has been added down here with windows and doors. Okay, let's start some modeling. First, let's go to the equipment room and begin that in our next video.

See you there.
