Delve into the process of adding dimensions and annotations to site plans using an efficient method that ensures all the text and features are placed correctly. The article walks you through the process of activating the view, using the annotate tab, and adding the right type of text, with a focus on a campus site plan.
Key Insights
- The process begins with activating the model view, rather than the paper space, to ensure that the annotations and dimensions are added to the right place, and this is done through the annotate tab.
- Text is then added, using the right type depending on what the text represents (quarter inch for the title, three thirty second for standard text), and then positioned and rotated into place using the rotate tool.
- Further dimensions can be added to the plan to represent features such as drive aisles, parking spaces, and building layouts to provide a comprehensive representation of the site.

For the dimensions, we're going to keep it pretty simple. And what we'll do for those, since those are views that we're going to have for our final sheets, is I'm going to actually go to my plans and add the dimensions that I want to show on those particular views. And so what I could do is I can go into, say, my site plan, and I can add the dimensions and annotations that I'm looking for.
And so we have two different site plans that we're going to work from. We'll start with our campus site plan. And the first thing we want to do is add the text that's going to represent both the street name here, and then we'll add some text here that represents the two buildings that we have.
So I'll start by activating the view. And this is really important because we don't want to be adding our text into kind of an old term, but into the paper space here, which is what you're seeing here. We want to be into the model view, which is this view here, and is exactly the same as this view right here.
We want to make sure that's where we're adding the text. And so if I go to my annotate tab and then text, I can go ahead and I can add it using the right type. So a quarter inch is a good title text here.
So I can go ahead and type it in. We're going to call it Enterprise Way, and then we can rotate it into place. And so I'll just kind of set it, say, about right here, and then I'll use my rotate tool and I'm going to drag the axis here, and I'll just set it, say, on this line, and then I can rotate it from horizontal to align with the center of our road.
And that's where we can set our street name. The next thing we'll do is we'll just add a bit of text for our building here. And to do that, I can just use the same text, but instead of quarter inch, I'll knock it down to the three-thirty-second because this is just standard text.
And so this is going to be Building 1701. And this will be we'll just kind of describe it a little bit. So it's a new two-story office building.
And to make this look a little fancier, we can go ahead and set it to be center with it selected there. And I can just throw that kind of in the middle and then I can go ahead and I can copy this one over to our other building, and this is going to be Building 1764, and this is not a new building because it's already been built.
This is an existing building. So I'll change that to an E. And now I've got the text set up on my campus plan here. So the next thing I'll do is I'll jump over to my site plan and then what we can do here is we can add some of the same notes.
And so I could go into my campus plan and what we could do is we can copy this and we can add that note, that same note. So I just use control C to copy and then control V. We can add that note to our plan here as well. And then I can add a few dimensions to just lay out our parking a little bit better.
And so I can add dimensions, say, from here back to represent like our drive aisle. And you can even modify this text to be more specific if you want. Or you can do it with a keynote which is something we're going to take a look at here in a little bit.
And so that clearly notes this as being the drive aisle. I could do the same thing with these spaces here. And you see how it wants to grab that horizontal line there? If I were to hit TAB it'll actually bounce me around to the point where I could grab the edge of the space.
And then that gives me the ability to then add the dimension for the drive aisle. And then since I've got the parking spaces already all set up, I can add the dimensions for the typical parking spaces here. And then just to kind of put some icing on the cake here, I could add a few more dimensions throughout the site plan but they're definitely not needed.
But it is helpful to have some of these to kind of show the difference in some of these drive aisles where you know this is kind of the main thoroughfare here. So it's got a little wider drive aisle whereas these ones are narrower down to the more minimum. And those are the dimensions that we can add to our site plan.
We'll take a look at our floor plan next.
