Creating Construction Documents for an Elementary School Project: Sheet Creation and Organization

Organizing Sheets and Creating a Sheet List for an Elementary School Construction Project

Discover how to create sheets and construction documents for your projects. The process includes coordinating with HVAC and modeling your entire system.

Key Insights

  • The process begins by creating a new sheet using the VDCI E1 30x42 horizontal option. If you do not have this option, you can find it in the downloads for the course.
  • After creating the sheets, you should rename them appropriately, for example, 'Site Plan-General Notes' for the first sheet, 'Hangars and Details' for the second, and so forth.
  • Once all the sheets are created and renamed, a sheet list is made under 'Schedules and Quantities'. This list contains the sheet name and number, which can be ordered as per preference.

Note: These materials offer prospective students a preview of how our classes are structured. Students enrolled in this course will receive access to the full set of materials, including video lectures, project-based assignments, and instructor feedback.

So at this point in the project, we've modeled our entire system and we've coordinated with H.V.A.C. Now all we need to do is create our sheets and create our construction documents. So let's go to our Project Browser.

Under Sheets, let's right-click and bring in a new sheet. Now if you don't have this option VDCI E1 30x42 horizontal, go ahead and go to Load and find where your Downloads folder is for the course. You should find that right here.

And let's go ahead and open that. Now I already have it in my project, but you probably don't, so you can go ahead and overwrite and click OK. Now if you don't have anything here, if it says Project Name, all you need to do is double-click and let's do this together.

Let's type Elementary School. Okay, now our first sheet here, let's go ahead and right-click and rename. The sheet number will be FP-1.

And let's title this Site Plan – General Notes. Okay, now let's create all of our sheets going forward and then we will bring the drawings onto our sheets. So let's go ahead and right-click and we will Duplicate Sheet and let's go ahead and duplicate this one more time.

FP-2, right-click and we will rename this Hangers and Details. FP-3, let's go ahead and rename this Level One Piping Plan. Okay, now let's go ahead and duplicate this sheet and let's rename this one to Level Two Piping Plan.

We would get rid of Copy 1, Level 2. All right, let's duplicate this one. FP-5, we will rename this with our Reflected Ceiling Plan. Two more sheets—let's duplicate this sheet and name it our Level Two Reflected Ceiling Plan.

All right, and one more sheet, duplicate and rename. This will be our Building Sections. All right, great.

So let's get started on our Site Plan. Let's go to our FP-1 Site Plan. We can close all of these other sheets.

Now that we've created our sheets, let's go ahead and create a Sheet List. If we go to Schedules and Quantities, let's right-click and choose New Sheet List. Now all we need to do is choose our Sheet Name and let's add it.

Let's go back to the list and choose Sheet Number. Now I actually want the number before the name, so with Number selected, let's move it up one and click OK.

Now here it is. It's a little short, but we'll extend it when we put it on our plan. Looks good.

We can close out of this. Now on our FP-1 Site Plan, let's find the Sheet List and let's drag it to our sheet somewhere about here. Okay, now you should be able to extend and shorten it.

So somewhere about here looks good. And now we have all of our sheet numbers and the sheet names. Let's go ahead and bring this somewhere about here.

Okay, in the next video, let's begin annotating our Site Plan and our Hangers and Details sheet.
