In 2012, Kush Patel founded App Academy to “make coding education open to anyone, anywhere.” The academy was launched in San Francisco, but added a campus in New York as well to increase its reach to both coasts. Over nearly a decade, the school has placed thousands of graduates into tech jobs and has been rated one of the best coding bootcamps worldwide by its students.

The immersive coding programs at App Academy are designed to prepare graduates for jobs in software engineering on an accelerated timeline. Because Patel understood that students may not be able to afford the price of a coding bootcamp outright, he decided to implement a deferred tuition model and ISA (income share agreement). In both of these models, students do not have to pay for the program until they are fully employed with a salary of at least $50,000.

What Classes Are Available?

There are three software engineering immersives available through App Academy. Full-time programs are available in 16-week and 24-week durations, or you may choose to complete a part-time program which is about a year long. All three programs are designed to help you get a job in your field upon graduation and include both front and back-end languages to optimize versatility in your career path.

Though the three immersives are fairly similar, there are a few factors that set them apart. One key difference is that the 16-week course teaches Ruby, while the 24-week and part-time programs both focus on Python. You can read more about all of the differences.

In addition to the immersive programs, there is a prep course you can either take live over four weeks or in a self-paced online format. While these courses are not free, you are guaranteed to be accepted at App Academy or any competing bootcamp or your tuition will be refunded.

App Academy also offers corporate training programs for companies looking to train their staff. These programs can be tailored from the academy’s extensive library of training topics including languages, frameworks, practices, and methodologies.

Class Formats

The main course offered through App Academy is the Software Engineering Immersive, which is available in the 16-week and 24-week full-time formats as well as the year-long part-time option. In the full-time courses, you’ll have full days of learning (9 am to 6 pm or 8 am to 5 pm) all week. The part-time course involves three-hour blocks during weekday evenings and 9 am to 3:30 pm on Saturdays. These are all currently held remotely, in a live online format.

As an alternative to the live courses, there is a self-paced format called App Academy Open. With this program, aspiring developers can access App Academy’s entire curriculum for free. This plan is perfect for someone who wants to teach themselves to code—and for a small fee ($29.99 per month) they even offer access to instructors for help and guidance with the curriculum.

Admissions Process

The admissions process for App Academy has several steps. First, students fill out an application verifying their education (high school diploma or equivalent required) and other pertinent information such as prior coding and work experience. The next step is a logic/reading exercise, followed by a 60-minute coding challenge. From there, prospective students will participate in technical and non-technical interviews before the final decision is made.

Pricing & Payment Options

App Academy’s tuition is flexible, and changes depending on when and how you will be paying for your course. The least expensive path is to pay upfront, which costs $17,000 for the 16-week program and $20,000 for the 24-week option. For those interested in paying upfront who do not have adequate funds, App Academy works with Climb to provide students with a line of credit for financing.

Alternatively, you can participate in App Academy’s ISA (Income Share Agreement) or Deferred Tuition models. In the ISA, which is only currently available for the 24-week immersive, students pay nothing until they are employed with a salary of at least $50,000. Once employed, students will pay 15% of their monthly salary for three years or until they’ve reached the cap of $31,000.

The Deferred Tuition plan is slightly different; students still pay nothing upfront but owe the full tuition once they are employed and earning $50,000 or more. This plan is available for both immersives; the 16-week program costs $28,000 and the 24-week is $31,000. This is still paid in monthly installments, but they are based on the full tuition amount rather than a percentage of salary.

As for scholarships, App Academy offers an Access Scholarship to increase diversity in the industry by offering tuition help for women and other underrepresented groups in tech.

Career Support Services

All of App Academy’s programs have career support baked right into the curriculum. In addition to support from career coaches, students build a significant portfolio of coding projects that showcases their abilities. The career support team also helps students write and polish their resumes and LinkedIn profiles, provides networking support, and conducts lectures on job interviews and salary negotiation.

Alumni Outcomes

According to App Academy’s latest outcomes information, which covers 2019 data, 93-95% of graduates who participated in job searches found placement within six months of graduation. Their average compensation for the first year was between $80,000 and $100,000, which is far higher than the required $50,000 for the deferred tuition or income share agreement. The types of jobs graduates are able to pursue upon completing an immersive program include Software Engineer, Web Developer, and Full Stack Developer, among many others. Salaries for these tech roles are generally well above the local average, regardless of the specific city or state.
