San Diego has a thriving AI job market, including a diverse range of opportunities. Job searches for the area turn up hundreds of different options, ranging from entry-level Data Analysts to expert AI researchers in both major global companies and small startups. In a recent San Diego Union-Tribune article titled, “AI Is Actively Reshaping San Diego. Here’s How, ” the author insists, “In recent years, San Diego has quietly become an AI powerhouse. With nearly 30,000 firms engaging with AI and machine learning–95% of which have already integrated these technologies–our region is at the forefront of AI adoption.”
With so many different industries utilizing AI, there is a high level of demand for AI experts in San Diego. In a recent report, the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation stresses, “Demand for AI-ML talent is more than double the regional supply.” According to the data that researchers analyzed, San Diego schools produced less than half of the graduates in AI and machine learning that were needed to fill the almost 8,000 job postings requiring these skills.
The Center for Research and Evaluation at UC San Diego Extended Studies recently published a report titled “Artificial Intelligence and Jobs Report, ” which discusses AI job trends in the San Diego area and identifies the industries in which AI skills are most sought after there. Researchers find that overall, in the past five years, there has been a substantial increase in job postings that mention AI. They state, “Across many industries and occupational categories, there has been a marked increase in job postings asking for AI skill sets. This is particularly true for the information, manufacturing, professional, scientific, technical services, and utilities industries.” When it comes to specific jobs, AI skills are most sought after in computer and mathematical occupations, followed by architecture and engineering, then life, physical, and social sciences.
AI salaries are generally significantly higher than average, and San Diego tends to pay well compared to many other major cities. This makes this city a potentially lucrative location to work in the field of AI.
By most estimates, AI job opportunities in San Diego will remain strong in the future. While some people worry that AI technology will take away their jobs, the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation insists that this is not the case in San Diego. It says, “AI-ML technologies are creating new jobs, not eliminating them. Furthermore, the high pay commanded by workers in AI-concentrated fields has positive ripple effects in the local economy; for every 1,000 jobs gained in this industry, another 1,400 are created in other sectors.”
