Learn how mastering Revit can enhance your career prospects in architecture, engineering, and construction through courses covering essential skills like 3D modeling, building information modeling (BIM), and schedule creation. Discover the professional advantages of proficiency in this powerful building modeling software.
Revit is a building information modeling (BIM) application. It is used by Architects, Engineers, and Contractors for designing, documenting, visualizing, and analyzing buildings. It is sometimes used in conjunction with AutoCAD. Revit 1.0 was first released in,000. It was acquired by Autodesk in 2002. According to the Revit website, the application got its name from the phrase 'Revise Instantly' and is meant to emphasize how easy it is to make changes with Revit.
Revit is mainly used within the construction industry, where it is designed to help Architects, Engineers, and Contractors do their jobs better. This application can help you work more quickly and accurately. It has a variety of automated tools that help streamline the design process. In addition, Revit makes collaboration with a team easy. Multiple users can work in the same model at the same time and share and receive changes by syncing with a central model.
By working with Revit, you can also see what your finished design will look like and analyze it to ensure it looks and works the way you intend. This can help you catch design problems quickly, before they become major issues. You can make changes to your design before you invest a lot of time and money in actually creating it.
Every Revit class is different, and what you learn will depend on the specific class that you enroll in. However, many Revit classes cover some similar fundamental skills. These are likely to include creating and modifying elements, 3D modeling, building information modeling, and creating schedules and reports. A Revit class will also help develop several soft skills, including attention to detail.
One of the first things you’ll learn in a Revit class is how to create and modify elements. In a tutorial on its website, Autodesk explains, “Elements are the building blocks of a 3D model.” It says that there are certain elements that exist in a building, and these will be found in all views. There are also elements like tags or annotations, which only appear where they have been placed.
With Revit, you can design buildings in 3D. You’ll learn about 3D modeling when you take a class. This type of modeling makes it easier to visualize what a design will look like and also identify any potential problems.
Building information modeling (BIM) is a process of designing and creating a digital representation of a building. An Autodesk article titled “What Is Building Information Modeling (BIM)?” explains, “BIM offers comprehensive benefits across the construction lifecycle, from streamlined collaboration to improved outcomes.”
Revit allows you to create schedules and reports, and a class will likely cover how to do this. Many different types of schedules and reports can be created with this application including for quantities, materials, and rooms.
Working in Revit also requires attention to detail, and you’ll develop this skill when you take a class. You’ll learn how to be precise in your work and pay close attention to the small details.
Revit is a technical application that has many different tools and features and most people say that it is fairly difficult to learn. However, almost anyone willing to devote the time and dedication can master this application. If you have experience with engineering or design, you’re likely to find the learning process easier. Many people who have already gone through the learning process stress the importance of not jumping ahead too quickly. Instead, they say, master the basics first, and then move on to more advanced features.
Many people find that the most challenging part of learning Revit is mastering the concept of 3D modeling, which involves working in a third dimension. Even if you have a lot of drawing experience, if you don’t have any experience with 3D modeling, learning Revit can take some time. A live class can be a great way to ease this and other learning challenges because you’ll have access to an expert instructor who can explain difficult concepts and answer any questions that you have.
The Revit learning process is different for everyone and is influenced by many factors, including how much related experience you have, your individual learning style, and the type of class you take. You should be able to master the basics within several weeks, however. It is likely to take months to learn most of the features, and at least a year to gain the level of proficiency that you’ll need to use this application professionally. The amount of time you devote to practice will also influence the learning process; the more you practice, the more quickly you’re likely to learn.
You’ll find both in-person and online Revit classes in New York City. Each format has its own advantages and disadvantages and the choice about which is best will depend on your personal circumstances and learning goals. Some people like in-person classes best because they find them engaging and like that there are many opportunities to interact with the instructor and fellow students. Another advantage of in-person learning is that it takes place in a classroom dedicated to learning and free from most distractions. A downside is that to learn in-person, you need to commute to a classroom. This may also mean that you have fewer class options.
Online learning offers more flexibility because no travel is involved. You can attend from anywhere with an internet connection, and you’re likely to have more class options. One type of online class is the virtual—or live online—class. A virtual class takes place in real-time and allows you to interact with your instructor and classmates. With this type of course you’ll typically need to provide your own equipment and supplies. Another online option is an on-demand class. On-demand classes are often significantly cheaper, however, they do not have a live instructor. Instead, you progress through a pre-recorded course at your own pace. On-demand learning offers a lot of flexibility, however, it may require more motivation since you control the pace of learning.
There are several different free Revit resources online, and they can be helpful when you’re trying to learn this application. Certain schools offer free resources to help prospective students learn more about various topics before they commit to a paid class. For instance, Noble Desktop provides many free seminars, including seminars about design. You’ll also find free Revit resources on the Autodesk website. There are limits to free resources, though, and if you want to master Revit, you may end up deciding to enroll in a formal class. A class will include instruction from an expert, a comprehensive curriculum to follow, and regular feedback on your progress.
Within the construction industry, AutoCAD is often used along with Revit, which means that if you’re learning Revit, AutoCAD may be a good complementary skill. AutoCAD is a computer-aided software design (CAD) program. It is also owned by Autodesk and was first released in 1982. This program is used for creating and editing 2D and 3D models and drawings. It has many specialized toolsets such as an Electrical toolset and an Architecture toolset, that help designers work more productively. Some people use it to create drawings and then import those drawings into Revit. Like Revit, AutoCAD is also designed to make collaboration easy.
New York City has a population of about 8.3 million people, and has one of the largest economies in the world. It offers many different employment opportunities. This is faster than the average job growth rate of only 4 percent. It states, “About 8,500 openings for architects are projected each year, on average, over the decade.” It also reports that the New York City metropolitan area has the highest employment of Architects in the country, with close to 11,000 people employed. According to Indeed, a New York City Architect has an annual salary of about $110,000.
An Engineer creates many different types of devices, systems, structures, and materials. Engineers often specialize in a specific field such as mechanical, civil, industrial, electrical, or electronics engineering. The BLS predicts that over the next ten years, there will be above-average growth in some engineering fields. For example, it finds that the growth rate for electrical and electronics engineering jobs will be 9 percent and that it will be 6 percent for civil engineering jobs. New York City is a top employer of Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, and Civil Engineers. According to Indeed, an Engineer in New York City earns an average of $122,000 yearly.
An Interior Designer designs indoor spaces, working to ensure that they are safe, functional, and visually appealing. The BLS predicts that over the next ten years, interior design jobs will grow by about 4 percent, with 8,800 jobs being added each year, on average. It reports that the New York City metropolitan area employs the most Interior Designers in the country; more than 7,000. As reported by Indeed, the average yearly salary for an Interior Designer in New York City is $84,000.
The Virtual Design and Construction Institute (VDCI) offers a variety of Revit classes.
