Computer-aided design (CAD) refers to the design aspect of CAD/CAM, or computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing. CAD software is used to create 2D drawings and 3D models and is a mainstay for Designers, Drafters, Engineers, Architects, and other professionals.
Created in the 1960s, CAD/CAM software was originally used as an integrated process for design and manufacturing in numerous industries. Today, however, there are many design professionals whose use of CAD software is so specialized that they hand off their work to a completely separate manufacturing side.
AutoCAD is a leading CAD software for multiple industries and has been primarily used for many years for schematics, models, and blueprints. As the flagship product for Autodesk, the AutoCAD software is important for numerous design professionals. This versatile software is expected to be part of the design process for the foreseeable future, and the demand for employees with AutoCAD expertise continues to grow.
AutoCAD Careers in Las Vegas
A top ten real estate market in 2021, the booming Las Vegas area offers a wide variety of opportunities for those with training in AutoCAD, including design, engineering, and advertising. Vegas, with its legendary hospitality sector and large corporations’ presence here—from Tesla to UnitedHealth Group—promises to be a major tech hub for years to come. It seems like the sky's the limit for Vegas tech careers.
As in other tech-related careers, salaries for Las Vegas professionals with AutoCAD experience vary widely. Whereas a CAD Designer should be able to earn a salary of around $50,000 per year, a Drafter who creates plans for Engineers or Architects can expect to earn about $62,000 annually. And a skilled Designer with AutoCAD training may command a salary as high as $73,000 annually—more than 7% above the national average.
Although you’ll certainly need training in multiple software programs to gain positions at these levels, expertise in AutoCAD can go a long way toward reaching your design career goals.
In-Person AutoCAD Classes in Las Vegas
In Las Vegas, New Horizons is currently the only option for in-person AutoCAD training. They provide three courses: AutoCAD 1—Essentials, AutoCAD 2—Intermediate, and AutoCAD 3—Creating & Presenting 3D Models.
ONLC Training Centers also offer AutoCAD courses to Las Vegas residents. These classes are taught via remote instructor, with the option to use their computer lab.
Virtual AutoCAD Classes
If you’d rather not fight traffic on the Las Vegas strip to get your AutoCAD training, there are several schools offering virtual/online live AutoCAD coursework. Online classes are hands-on, interactive experiences with expert instructors who can see and even control the screen, with permission.
Noble Desktop, the creator of this tool, provides AutoCAD training at multiple levels. Their AutoCAD Level 1 course, which is taught at their NYIM Training affiliate, offers AutoCAD for beginners, including printing and plotting layouts and sheets. Other course offerings include AutoCAD Levels 2 and 3, and an eight-hour 3D Modeling in AutoCAD seminar which helps students with 2D skills level up to advanced 3D models. Your area of specialization will determine which of these classes is best for you.
Other live online course options include AutoCAD training from NYC Career Centers such as AutoCAD in a Day, and an AutoCAD Bootcamp, as well as those taught by NYIM Training. The NYIM Training classes include their own 40-hour AutoCAD Bootcamp, which includes both fundamentals and training in creating 2D drawings with the software.
Self-guided AutoCAD Programs
Students who are looking to make a career out of using AutoCAD might also be interested in their options for career focused, self-guided classes. These courses allow students to learn at their own pace (with guidance and assistance from a professional mentor) and they provide students with career-focused training and job placement support. While many students find it desirable to learn from a live instructor, these self-paced classes are the perfect fit for self-motivated students looking to make a career out of their AutoCAD training.
