Refining Door Legend with Dimensions and Glass Types for Revit Design

Enhancing Door Legend with Dimensions and Glass Types for Detailed Revit Design.

Discover how to refine and add more notes to your door legend setup, including the addition of dimensions and glass types. Learn essential shortcuts, techniques, and methods to ensure you're effectively using Revit to meet your project's requirements.

Key Insights

  • The article provides a step-by-step guide on refining an established door legend setup in Revit, including the addition of dimensions using the keyboard shortcut DI. This is crucial to ensure that the dimensions match what is stated in the schedule.
  • The author illustrates methods of adding text to dimensions in order to avoid inconsistencies. By clicking on the dimension and replacing the text with 'per schedule', users can ensure accuracy in their design.
  • The article also explains how to define different glass types and how to copy and paste these definitions across the design. This includes the use of the control key and the drag function to make quick copies of the desired object.

Now that we have the door legend set up, we can go in and we can start to refine this a bit. So by refine it, what I'm referring to is we can add more notes and information. So I'll kind of pull this in a little, like I mentioned when we created it, I had no idea how long it really needed to be and it was definitely going to be something that we would change.

First thing we'll do is we'll add some dimensions. So I'll start with our single and double storefront door here, just by adding an aligned dimension. And I used that keyboard shortcut that I recommended to everybody learns, which is DI.

And I just placed it here. Now these dimensions would be repetitive if those were actually the correct dimensions. And in this case, they definitely are not.

We want to go in and we want to change this because we don't want to say that the door is seven feet wide when the schedule is going to say something totally different. So what I'll do, and I can almost guarantee a lot of you've seen this box already, but essentially you click on the dimension. And then if you click on where it says the text here, this box pops up.

And a lot of times people, when they're first starting out, will run into this as they're trying to modify dimensions. But in this case, we actually want to replace it with text. And so I'll replace it with text and I can just simply say per schedule and do the same thing here as well.

And I'll go through and I can do that for all of the doors. This one includes a frame, so we want to make sure that we dimension to the right location. And then we can add those dimensions.

I'll just go ahead since we're in the dimension command, add the ones to door type C as well. Notice how I'm aligning them at the top as well. And then now we can go back through and rename all of these dimension types.

If you're tired of typing per schedule, you can always highlight it here and you can hit control C to copy it or right click and hit copy. And then now when I go back into the other ones, I can just right click and hit paste. Or if you don't mind typing it, that works too.

And of course, control C, control V is a viable option as well. Now we've got the dimensions. I want to go ahead and define some of the glass types here so I can do more text box and I'll just type in the text that are the glass type we're using, which in our case here is GL1.

And make sure I'm using the right text type, which I am. And I'll move this kind of off to the side and then I'll just copy it across. And one of the ways that you can copy in Revit is if you hold down the control key and then press and drag, it'll make a copy of the object for you.

And this comes in handy on cases like this, you know, where it's like, okay, I just need to put a piece of text down here, which in for this project is going to represent a T, which is for tempered glass. So I can set that in and then I can copy it across to this side as well. And then these designations are going to be pretty similar to what we have for the double glass.

So I'll copy one of these over both groups using that new control trick that we just learned. This would be a different type because this is a different type of door here, but we can just copy it over all the same. And now we have a completed door legend that is ready to be put onto our sheet.

So I'm going to save because we want to make sure we're after every milestone that we do. And then I'll tab over to the sheet and then in my project browser, I'll look for legends and I have my door type legend, and I can put this on the sheet underneath my schedule. And I'll just kind of adjust this around so that it looks nice.

And there we go. More information is on the sheet. And so our next schedule that we're going to do is called a multi-category schedule, and that'll allow us to schedule all of the different furniture elements.
