Learn how to import AutoCAD framing details into a Revit framing detail sheet. This guide will take you step-by-step through the process, from creating a new drafting view to adding depth to your detail and inserting it into your project.
Key Insights
- The process begins with creating a new drafting view in Revit, which will be named 'wall to slab frame' and have a scale of three-quarter inch.
- A grid can be added to the detail by copying one from the foundation details and aligning it to the current view. The detail is then dragged into the drawing, and a new family is created for it in the BIM 342 folder.
- The detail title 'right justified no line' is loaded from the C drive, and then inserted into the project. The extension line is then turned off to finalize the detail.

Hello and welcome back to Revit Structure. Let's get started. In our previous session, we had imported a couple of AutoCAD foundation details into our Revit project.
Let's continue by importing some AutoCAD framing details into a Revit Framing Detail Sheet. First thing we want to do is go to the View tab, then go to our Drafting View. Let's create our new Drafting View. For this framing detail, we're going to call it Wall to Slab Frame.
Our scale is going to be three-quarter inch. Hit OK. Now we want to go to the Insert tab, select the Import CAD tool in the Import panel, and we are in our BIM 342 folder with our downloaded framing details.
So let's pick our first framing detail, check our parameters. The color we want to use is black and white, and we want our positioning to be Manual—Center so we can set the location when we place it. Hit Open. There it is.
Okay, and again, let's take a look at it. We see it's pretty monotone, so let's give it some depth. Let's type VV.
Let's go to the Imported Categories, and here we have the layers from AutoCAD. Let's go to Lines. Let's pick that and overwrite it.
Let's give our Heavy line a 5. Hit OK. Let's give our Light line a 1 and our Medium line a 3.
Hit OK. Let's see how it looks. There you go—we have depth to our detail.
Now what we want to do is, as we did previously, we have it just in a Drafting View detail. We want to rename this to Framing. So let's get into our detail again. Let's go to Edit Type.
Let's go to Rename, and we're going to call this Framing. OK, and there you have it. Now we have our Drafting Views.
Hit OK. Now we have our Drafting Views for Framing. Let's close out of this.
Let's go to our Framing Detail Sheet. You’ll notice we don't have a Grid here, so let's go back to our foundation details. A very quick method to place a Grid is to pick the existing Grid we have in the foundation details.
Copy it. Let's go to our Framing details. Let's go to the drop-down in the Paste in the Clipboard and choose Aligned to Current View.
There you have it. We have a Grid. Okay, right now we're going to pick our detail.
We're going to drag it into our drawing sheet. There we have it. Again, this is not the detail that we want.
So what we're going to do is use a family we created. Let's go find it. And in our BIM 342, we have our new family.
It's a.RFA called Detail Title Right Justified No Line. Okay, so what we want to do is go to Load Family. Go to our C: drive.
Our BIM folder. Pick our Detail Title. Open it.
And now it's inserted into the project. What we will do now is pick our detail bubble. Go to Edit Type.
And in Title, we'll pull the drop-down, and there is our Detail Title Right Justified No Line. We'll pick that. We hit OK.
And there you have our new Wall Slab Framing detail note. As you can see, we have a little tail on our detail notation. Let's go to Edit Type.
Select Show Extension Line. Let's turn that off. Hit OK.
And there you have it. We now have our detail named and placed. Go ahead and place the other two framing details, and when we come back, we will start to import Revit details into our project.
That's it for this video. We'll see you in the next one.
