Learn the process of designing a roof using a software from our roof plan, with steps such as creating an existing version, changing the phase from new construction to existing, and selecting the type of roof. Understand the intricacies such as checking the base level, finishing the sketch, and moving into the next step of creating doors and windows.
Key Insights
- The process of creating a roof is similar to creating a level two slab, but it is executed from a roof plan.
- Important steps include creating an existing version of the plan and changing the phase from 'new construction' to 'existing'.
- Once the roof is created, and the base level is set to roof, the next steps involve designing doors and windows.

The process for creating the roof is going to be almost identical to creating the level two slab, but we're just going to do that from our roof plan instead. Now the roof plan is a new level that we created when we created the levels to establish the height of the building. So before I do that, I need to make sure of a couple of things.
So this plan, we have not created an existing version of it, so I should do that. So I'll right click, duplicate, and then I'll use the duplicate option here. And then I'll want to go in and actually change the phase here from new construction to existing.
One of the other things that we did was we renamed it, and this makes sense to do here as well, just so that we're being consistent with the rest of our views. Now I've got existing level one, level two, and existing roof. And so I can go in and I can say architecture, pick roof, and then I'll pick the type that I want to use.
And so we'll use the steel truss with insulation on metal deck for the EPDM, which is a single ply membrane that we can use here. And I'll use the rectangle tool and just grab the inside face of the rectangle all the way down. So you might remember from previous lessons in our previous two courses here that these symbols are going to represent the slope of our roofing, and we want this to be a flat roof.
We're going to go ahead and select all those lines. And just as a refresher, when I hover over a chain like this, if I hit TAB, it'll highlight the chain of walls or lines, and in this case, our sketch for our roof. And then if I left click without moving my mouse, then I can select all four of those at once and then uncheck it by checking that box there.
And I'm just going to check a couple of things. So base level is set to roof, which is exactly what we want. And then I'll finish the sketch.
If I were to go into 3D, you can see we've got our lovely box here. And that means we're ready to dive in to creating some of our doors and our windows now. So let's go ahead and create our door.
We're going to go ahead and create our door.
