This article guides the reader through the process of documenting a Revit Structure project, focusing on the annotation and notation of the roof design. The guide emphasizes the importance of clarity and accuracy in the annotations and also offers tips on handling different types of beam and column structures.
Key Insights:
- The article explains how to navigate to the roof level of a Revit Structure project, hide unnecessary elements to create a clear workspace, and place information effectively.
- It provides a step-by-step guide on how to annotate beams and columns accurately, emphasizing the need to differentiate between different types such as moment frames, brace frames, and standard vertical loaded beams.
- The guide also discusses the execution of notations on sheathing and the use of the 'type mark' parameter for labeling columns, which will help in creating an organized and easily understandable schedule later on.

Hello and welcome to Revit Structure. Let's get started. Now that we've placed annotations or noted information on our floor plans, let's go to our roof.
Let's go to our Project Browser. Let's go to our Roof level. Let’s double-click on that, and it takes us to our roof.
You’ll notice that we’re not showing the High Roof here because we have it in a plan of its own. Let's get started. As we did in the previous video, let's go ahead and select multiple joists.
Let’s right-click on them. Let’s hide them. Let’s do that again with our other areas so we can have a clear space to place our information.
You’ll notice it’s a little easier at the roof because we have fairly uniform areas now, as we don’t have a stair or elevator going up to the roof. One last section. Let’s right-click on that.
Let’s select Hide in View > Elements*, and there we have it. Okay, now we want to go to our Annotate tab. Let’s pick that.
Let’s go to our Symbol panel and choose Beam System Symbol*. Let’s pick that. Let’s find our Beam System.
Let’s pick that. Let’s align this. Very good.
Let’s finish. Let’s go through and annotate or place notations on each of our systems. You don’t have to do all of them.
We can do one and mark it as typical. Each office is different, so again check with your BIM Manager to make sure what is the preferred method in your office. Okay, let's finish.
Again, we have the alignment guide. We can use that to align all of our text and make it look uniform. There it is.
Let’s pick this small area, place that, this small area, and this area at the top. Let’s finish the rest of our areas here. Very good.
Let’s escape out of that. Now let’s go to Tag so we can tag our beams. Let’s go to Tag*.
Again, let’s check the Properties*. We don’t want leaders for this, so let’s uncheck that to turn off the leader. Let’s go to our Tags and check our tag information.
We want Structural Framing*. We want the Framing Tag Standard*, which it is. Click OK*.
Let’s start tagging our beams. Again, we won’t tag the moment frame or the brace frame—just the vertically loaded beams. See, we’re picking up some extraneous joists here, so press TAB until we select the correct beam type.
Very good. Let’s go across this line. Let’s finish it up.
Cross this one. And again, we have framing in our opening, so we should tag those also. Let’s pan up.
Let’s finish this line. Very good. Again, we’re not tagging the brace frame here.
Let’s finish out our last one—our last horizontal line. Again, not the moment frame here. Very good.
Okay, let’s finish our vertical beams—vertical on the page. Again, it’s picking up the extraneous joist type, so let’s press TAB until we find the correct type. There it is.
And if this happens, you can press TAB to cycle through all of your beam types. Sometimes they don’t show up immediately, which makes this helpful. Again, we’re not tagging the moment frame or the brace frame, so let’s move down the line and finish these.
There it is. There’s that one. Okay, we’re not tagging the moment frame.
We’ve picked our glulam beams. There it is. Not the brace frame.
Moment frame, brace frame. Very good. Now it looks like we’ve finished tagging all of the beams.
Let’s go ahead and add a notation for our sheathing. So let’s escape out of that. And again, we’ll go to our Annotate tab.
We’ll go to Text*. Let’s set the parameters. We want it top justified, left justified.
We want the two-segment leader. So let’s go here. Let’s place this.
Let’s check our parameters here. We want ⅛" / ½", all caps: Plywood Sheathing*. Very good.
Okay, one thing we want to do is tag the columns we placed for our High Roof plan. What we want to do is use a Type Mark and not call out what it is explicitly—we’ll use the Type Mark and place it in a schedule later. The first thing we want to do is pick our column, go to Edit Type*, and you’ll notice in the Type Properties we have a field called Type Mark*.
In the value field, we want to enter: SC2 (Steel Column–2). This will be picked up in our schedule later. Click OK*.
What we’ll do next is go back down to the first level and find our Gravity Columns and label those SC1s*. So let’s again go to Tag*. This time, we do want a leader.
So let’s check that on. Let’s go to Tags and select Structural Columns*. Okay, we want to pick Type Mark*.
We have that set. You’ll see we have different types to pick from. What we want is Type Mark*.
That’s okay. Let’s pick our column. What we also want to do is set the leader to Free End*.
Let’s pick it. This gives us the ability to move our notation around the page to a clear position where it’s easily readable. There we go.
Very good. Let’s finish. Again, we have the alignment guide there.
The alignment tool helps us with layout. Let’s finish the rest of them. And usually, in most offices—escape out of that.
Let’s see. Let’s find the proper column—not the beam.
There it is. Sometimes you have to work through some elements to get to the right one. And here is this one.
Very good. Let’s finish that. Very good.
Now that we’ve placed notations on all of our members at the roof, that’s going to finish this video. Let’s zoom out. And we’ll see you in the next one.
