Delve into the world of Revit MEP as this article takes you through the process of integrating plumbing aspects into your project, beginning with the copying and monitoring of existing plumbing fixtures from the architect's design. Learn how to adjust visibility settings, manage elements, and insert elements such as a water heater into your project.
Key Insights
- The article delves into the copy monitor function in Revit MEP that allows for the integration of existing plumbing fixtures into a new project from an architect's existing design.
- The reader is walked through the process of adjusting visibility settings to manage what elements are visible in the project plan, a critical step in maintaining clarity and organization in the design process.
- The step-by-step process of how to insert a water heater into the project is also demonstrated, offering an example of how to add elements to the plumbing aspect of the design.
Welcome back to the CAD Teacher VDCI video course content for the BIM 321 course, Introduction to Revit MEP. In the previous videos, we went ahead and actually got our entire mechanical system dialed in and ready to go. So what I want to go ahead and do now is we're going to start working on the plumbing aspect of this project and with that being said the first thing that we're going to want to go ahead and do is copy monitor the Architect's existing plumbing fixtures into our drawing.
We're going to say that the determining location and placement of these different fixtures so we're going to go ahead and connect those in. So to start off we want to go ahead let's hop down to our plumbing floor plan here. So the first floor plumbing floor plan and here we are.
So previously, when we were first setting this up we were able to copy monitor in our different grades and different datum elements. Well one thing that we can also copy monitor in would also be the plumbing fixtures. So let's go ahead and hop over to the collaborate tab.
I'm going to go ahead and select copy monitor and I'm going to select the link. If you get this little message just go ahead hit save project. Select the link.
I'm going to select this link here, go ahead and select copy. I'm going to choose multiple and I'm going to go ahead and pick holding control on all of the different plumbing fixtures here on the first floor.
As you can see I've copied all of those. I'm going to go ahead hit finish here. It's going to go ahead copy monitor those in.
It's going to take a minute. It's going to bring over those different files. Just let it do its thing.
It'll take a minute and there we go. So as you can see I now have my version of the different units here. If I were to select on them as you can see I have a hot water in, a waste out, hot water in, waste out, or cold water in, cold water in for the drinking fountains.
We have a cold water in and a waste. We have a water in and then the waste out through the bottom. So on and so forth.
Let's go ahead hop up to the second floor and do the same thing. So I'm going to go here to my second floor plumbing view. There we go.
I'm going to go to copy again up here. I'm going to choose multiple and choose the same exact objects. Not the wall.
If you accidentally select something just hold shift deselect. There we go. I'm going to go ahead hit finish.
There we go. I'm going to go back up to my copy monitor here and I'm going to hit finish here. Perfect.
Now one thing that you'll notice if I drag this away, first of all it's going to give me a warning that says coordination model relative position of two fixtures changed. That's because I moved the monitored one away from the current one. I'm going to go ahead and close that.
I'm going to actually undo using control z. The problem, though, is that we're showing both in this view. We want to go ahead and turn off the Architect's specific models. So I'm going to go ahead hit VV.
The problem, though, is that I can't just go here and turn off my plumbing fixtures. The reason why that is that will turn off all of the plumbing fixtures in the entire project including the ones in the link. So how to turn these off I'm going to go up here to Revit links.
I'm going to go to display settings change by host view. I'm going to change it to custom. I'm going to choose model categories.
Change model categories to custom. I'm going to scroll down and turn off plumbing fixtures. Apply and hit okay.
Hit okay again and that's going to go ahead and turn off the ones behind. I'm going to go to my first floor plumbing plan and do the same thing. So first floor plumbing.
I'm going to go ahead go VV. I'm going to go to my Revit links tab. Change it from display settings to custom.
Go to model categories. Change model categories to custom. Scroll down and find plumbing fixtures.
Hit apply and hit okay. I'm going to go ahead hit okay again and there we are. Let's go ahead zoom extents, Control+S, and save the file.
Now you notice that we do see our mechanical equipment here. If I go into VV on this view I'm just going to go ahead and turn off my mechanical equipment and hit apply and it has removed those items. The next thing we want to go ahead and do is we're going to pop in a water heater.
The water heater is going to take from our inlet our supply and it's going to go ahead it's going to pull off of that have water heater and then it's going to have an out also. So let's go ahead and place a water heater. I'm going to go systems.
Now the funny thing about water heaters is they're actually under Mechanical Equipment. So the thing is we just turned off our mechanical equipment right. So this is kind of one of these weird things that we have to understand the categories of Revit MEP.
Let's go ahead and back turn on our mechanical equipment. I'm going to go VV again. Scroll down find mechanical equipment apply and okay.
Now to show these and not have these shown all I'm going to do is I'm just going to select every single one of them. This is not something that we typically do but obviously my vav units will never be shown in my plumbing plan. So I'm going to go ahead do a right click.
I'm going to go to Hide in View > Elements. There we are perfect. Now what I want to go ahead and do is let's go ahead and bring in my mechanical equipment or my water heater.
So I'm going to mechanical equipment. I'm going to load family. I'm going to go ahead and scroll down.
And let's look in plumbing MEP, equipment, Water Heaters and then we're going to go ahead and grab this water heater here. Hit open and there we are. Let's say that this place needs a 75-gallon water heater.
So I'm going to choose 75-gallon. There we go and I'm going to go ahead place it just leave it on level 1 and I'm going to go ahead and just go ahead and pop it in here. There we go.
I'm going to go ahead and hit escape, zoom extents, Control+S, and save the file. I'm going to go ahead and stop this video here. In this video we've gone ahead and copy monitored the plumbing fixtures from the Architect's model.
We've also adjusted some visibility settings. We've placed in our water heater. In the next few videos we're going to go ahead and start bringing our piping system in and start tying everything together.
See you then.
