Discover the intricacies of labeling parcels in Civil 3D, including the different parts of a parcel and how to label the remainder of the parcels in a selected segment. This article also imparts a new method for creating segment labels using the menu bar.
Key Insights
- The article discusses the different parts of a parcel in Civil 3D, which include the parcel itself, parcel segments, parcel area labels, and parcel segment labels.
- The author demonstrates how to use the menu bar for annotation in Civil 3D and explains its advantages over other options in the ribbon bar.
- By navigating to the annotation dropdown in the menu bar and selecting parcel labels, one can access options like 'add parcel labels', 'single segment', and 'multiple segment' for more efficient parcel labeling.

In this video, we're going to talk about the different parts of a parcel, and then we're going to go ahead and label the remainder of the parcels in this left-hand segment of the parcels we have in the drawing. So what we have for different parts of parcel are the actual parcel itself, parcel segments, parcel area labels, and parcel segment labels.
So inside of Civil 3D, if you select the label in the center of a parcel, that is the parcel area label. Now when I select that parcel area label, what it does is it highlights the boundary of the parcel. And so the boundary of the parcel, the closed boundary itself, is the actual parcel itself.
We have the parcel and the parcel area label. Now we have the other parts of a parcel, which is the parcel segment, which is the individual lines that make up the closed boundary of a parcel. And then we have the segment labels, which are the labels that we created in the last video.
So I'm going to show you another method for creating some segment labels, and we're going to do that by going up to the menu bar that we created or turned on when we first started this class. If you didn't do that in the first couple of videos when we talked about it originally, go ahead and do that now. We're going to type M-E-N-U-B-A-R, or menu bar, and we're going to hit ENTER.
And then we're going to select a new value for our menu bar. If yours is zero, that means it's not being displayed. If you turn it to one, it will display.
As you can see, mine is set to one because I have mine displayed right now. I'm going to change mine to zero so you can see what it looks like without it being turned on, and then I'm going to turn it back on. So I'm going to hit ENTER, and you'll notice that the bar up at the top of my screen disappeared.
Now if I hit ENTER again, and I hit one, and I hit ENTER, the menu bar now shows up at the top. Now this menu bar has a lot of the same options that are in the ribbon bar, but there are some options in here that are not available in the ribbon bar. And so I always have menu bar turned on when I'm working inside Civil 3D.
Part of that reason is because I prefer to do annotation for Civil 3D from the menu bar in the annotation dropdown. So inside the annotation dropdown up here, I'm going to go ahead and navigate down to parcel labels. And so inside of parcel labels, you can see in the breakout dropdown, you have this add parcel labels, single segment, and multiple segment.
Now, if you select add parcel labels, it's going to be almost exactly the same as our add labels button over on the left-hand side here. But when I select it, I'm going to go ahead and get a window, and it's going to have already selected my feature of parcel. Whereas when I went to add labels, it starts me off in note, and I have to drop down select parcel.
So it's just a little bit faster, and these are where you learn kind of efficiencies inside of Civil 3D. So annotation, parcel labels, add parcel labels will now allow you to select single,
Multiple, replace area, and replace area. So what you'll notice now is that there are some more efficiencies inside of that annotation dropdown.
So inside of that annotation dropdown, you also had options for single and multiple segments. So what Civil 3D allows you to do is if I close this window, and I drop down annotation, and I go to parcel labels, and I select multiple segments, Civil 3D automatically puts me into that multiple segments selection from the add labels window, and I just start clicking the area labels to place my multiple segments labels. So I'm going to go ahead and go every other parcel because I don't want to double up on my labels.
So I'm going to select this parcel and do clockwise, this parcel, do clockwise, this parcel, do clockwise, this parcel, clockwise, this parcel, clockwise, and because I already have a label here, I'm not going to select this area here. So I'm going to hit escape to get out of that command. Then I'm going to go back up at annotation.
I'm going to drop down. I'm going to go ahead and select parcels. I'm going to do single segment.
I'm going to go ahead and select the top missing portions here. I'm going to select my curve, my side missing portions, moving down to my bottom missing portions here, my curve, and my side missing portion, and then I'm going to navigate into the centers here. I'm going to click here.
I have all my labels along here. I have all my labels along here. I have one down there.
So I have now officially labeled all of the segments for all the parcels on the left-hand side of the screen. I'm going to go ahead and hit escape, and then I'm going to go ahead and save, and I will meet you in the next video where we will discuss how to replace some of the labels that we've just added.
