Discover the process of adding individual labels to a section view in Civil 3D. Gain insights into label creation, selection of section views and points, and understand the difference between section view labels and label sets.
Key Insights
- The article explains how to add individual labels to a section view in Civil 3D using the annotation dropdown and selecting options like Grade or Offset Elevation.
- These labels are associated with the two points selected and are not as robust as using label sets. They also do not automatically update if changes are made to the station.
- However, labels created based on a section label set are dynamic and linked to the codes, making them automatically update when necessary, distinguishing them from individual section view labels.

In this video, we're going to go ahead and talk about adding an individual label to a section view. So I'm going to go ahead and zoom in on this upper-left section view, and then we'll start talking about how to add these labels in.
So what you can do to add an individual label to a section view is you can either go to Annotate, Add Labels, or you can go to the Annotation dropdown, go to our Section View Labels, and then select one of these options, Grade or Offset Elevation. So first, I'm going to select Grade, and what Civil 3D is going to ask me to do is select a section view. So I'm going to go ahead and select the section view we're zoomed in on, and then Civil 3D is going to ask me to pick a first point.
So in this instance, we are labeling something inside of the section view. We are not labeling an actual element inside the section view. So I'm going to go ahead, and I have to snap to the point that I want to zoom in on.
So I'm going to go ahead and pick somewhere here. I'm going to go ahead and pick somewhere over here for my second point. And so Civil 3D gives me a label of negative 1.6%. Now, if I hit Escape out of that label command, what you're going to notice is that these labels are not associated with the link that's on the top of this corridor that we have here.
They're just associated with the two points. So they're not as robust as using label sets, like we were doing before, and sometimes the grips have a little bit of an issue.
So I am having a hard time getting clicked back into where I was before. So I prefer label sets, but if you needed to have an individual label done, this is an option for you. Same thing if we drop Annotation down, and we go to Section View Labels, and we go to Offset Elevation, we're going to again have to select a section view.
And then Civil 3D is going to ask me to pick a point. So I'm going to go ahead and pick anywhere. I could pick anywhere on the screen, and it's going to place an offset and elevation label.
Now, it doesn't make sense to place a label up here somewhere, but this just shows you that this is not labeling a specific object. It's just labeling a specific point. So I can go ahead and snap here and give myself an offset and elevation for my daylight.
But again, this label is not associated with that daylight point code. It's associated with its specific location here. If we moved this station, this elevation would stay here, but it wouldn't update.
Whereas these labels that we added here, these are dynamic and linked to the codes, so they'll automatically update. So that's just the difference between doing a section view label and doing a label based on a section label set. So I'm going to go ahead and save this drawing.
And I'll meet you in the next video.
