Learn about two creation methods in civil 3D that allow for creation of parcels from various objects and employing different techniques. The article focuses on creating parcels from objects such as lines, arcs, and polylines, as well as using the tangent to tangent with no curves method for parcel creation.
Key Insights
- The article elaborates on the use of the create parcel from objects method in civil 3D, which allows for creation of parcels from various entities including lines, arcs, and polylines. It explains the process in detail, starting from creating the objects, selecting them, and finally creating the parcel using specific parameters.
- It also explains the entity retention feature of civil 3D, which retains the original design of the objects used in creating the parcels. For instance, if a parcel is created from a line and arc fused together as one entity, civil 3D will recognize them as such.
- The tangent to tangent with no curves creation method is also discussed. The author describes how to use this method and its limitations, such as the difficulty in closing off the parcel, and offers workarounds for these challenges.

In this video, we're going to talk about two creation methods that we kind of breezed over in the previous videos. So what we're going to be dealing with is we're going to be dealing with our create parcel from objects, which we used to create the large parcel that we then subdivided, but we did it based off of a polyline.
And I want to cover some of the other entities inside of Civil 3D that can be used to create parcels inside of Civil 3D. We're also going to dive into parcel creation tools. And we're going to deal with this tangent to tangent with no curves creation method.
So starting off, I'm going to go ahead and go over to the right-hand side of these, I'm going to create these parcels. And then at the end of this video, we're going to go ahead and delete them. If you don't want to follow along, you don't have to, you can just listen in.
And I'll describe what we're going to be talking about. And then at the end of the video, I'm going to delete them. And we'll go ahead and be in the next video and actually start working in our working drawing.
So I'm going to create some Civil 3D entities, I'm going to create some lines, I'm going to create some arcs, and I'm going to create some polylines. And they're all going to link together and we're going to create a parcel from it. So I'm going to go ahead and do L for Line, I'm going to draw a line here.
Then I'm going to go A for Arc, I'm going to start here, I'm going to come out here, I'm going to just click anywhere out here, I'm going to do a PL from there to there. And then I'm going to do an arc by saying A and clicking there. So I'm going to get out of here.
So what I have now is I have an entity that is a line and arc and a polyline. So from there, what you can do is they're not closed off, they're not joined or anything like that. So I'm going to drop down and I'm going to go ahead and select Create Parcel from Objects.
What you'll see if you hover over it for long enough, Civil 3D will tell you that you can create parcels from lines, arcs and polylines. So all you're going to have to do is select the objects in the current drawing or from an XREF and the objects you select must be free of drawing errors such as gaps at intersection points. So I'm going to go ahead and click it.
I'm going to drop a box around the objects that I want to create a parcel out of. And then I'm going to hit ENTER because I'm done selecting. And Civil 3D is going to prompt me to create a parcel using the different parameters that we have for parcel creation.
We have the site that it's going to be associated with, the style, the layers, the label styles, and whether or not I want to erase that existing entity. So I'm going to go ahead and say yes to erasing the existing entity. And so now what I have is I have a parcel that was created with a line and arc and a polyline.
And so what Civil 3D does is because it was created with that line, that arc and that polyline, it actually retains what they were originally designed as. So this was a joined, or basically a polyline that started with a line and arc. So they're fused together as one entity.
Then we have a line as a separate entity and we have an arc as a separate entity. So this just goes to show you that instead of, like we did here, where we had a single polyline that was closed to create an object and to create the parcel, you can do it with simple AutoCAD objects like lines, arcs, and polylines. Moving on from there, we're going to go ahead and dive back into the parcel dropdown, Parcel Creation Tools.
I'm going to minimize these parameters because we're not going to be dealing with the parameters now. I'm going to select Tangent to Tangent with No Curves and I'm going to click it. What Civil 3D is going to do is it's going to ask me to specify my creation entities:
So my site, my parcel styles, my label styles. So I'm going to go ahead and click Okay. And what Civil 3D is asking me to do now is specify a start point.
So, I'm going to go ahead and specify any point on the screen. And it's now asking me for my next point, then the next point, and the next point. This is just like creating a polyline basically, except that we cannot create any curves, but you're only going tangents to tangents.
We can click anywhere, click anywhere, click anywhere, and then we can hit ENTER to get out of that command and exit, right? So what you, what I didn't show was that there was no way to snap that last point to this point. What I didn't show was that there was no way to snap that last point to this point. When you do the Tangent to Tangent with No Curves, it's very hard to close this parcel. If I'm doing that and I don't have any curves to add, and I just have tangents, what I will do is I'll often follow my path for my traverse, but I will stop before I make my closure.
And that's so that the last entity that I create, I can either draw a line between them, or I'll click a point close to it and then get out. And then what you can do is you can drag that last entity and snap it in. And when you snap it into the endpoint and you create a closed object, Civil 3D will now create a parcel from it.
So Parcels always have to be closed in order for them to be drawn up inside of Civil 3D. You can't have any non-closure on a parcel for Civil 3D to create a parcel object inside of the drawing. So I'm going to go ahead and select this.
I'm going to delete, and then we will save off the drawing in case we didn't save off from our freeform create. And then I'll meet you in the next video, and we'll talk about doing unions and dissolutions of parcels.
