Discover how to create a combination surface in civil engineering using a step-by-step tutorial. Master the art of pasting surfaces, editing them, and modifying associated surfaces to create a comprehensive layout.
Key Insights
- The creation of a combination surface involves a repeated cycle of right-clicking and pasting surfaces, which should be done in the order the surfaces would be constructed.
- After pasting all the necessary surfaces, the surface properties can be changed to hide them, leaving a clear view of the combination surface created.
- Throughout the process, it is crucial to save the drawing regularly to avoid loss of progress made on the surface design.

In this video, we're going to go ahead and create a combination surface. It's going to be another kind of slog through adding things in and just kind of working through our workflow of right-click, paste, and that kind of thing.
So let's get this started. We're going to go ahead and go to Surfaces. We're going to right-click.
We're going to create a surface. We're going to go ahead and name this surface Combo, and then I'm going to go ahead and hit OK. When we create this Combo surface, what we have to be cognizant of is that we're going to go ahead and do edits.
So I expanded out Combo, expanded out Definitions. I'm going to go to my Edits, and I'm going to right-click. I'm going to go ahead and paste in a surface.
So that's down here at the bottom for Paste Surface. I'm going to click Paste Surface. And when you paste surfaces, you want to try and paste in the surfaces in the order that something would be constructed, because what you're going to be doing is you're going to be using a surface, and then you're going to be modifying any surfaces that are associated with that surface.
We're going to start with our base surface, which is our Civ-202. I'm going to go ahead and click OK. So I've now pasted in my Civ-202 surface.
Now I need to keep track of which ones I'm going to be adding. So I'm going to do this in an order that makes sense to me. So I'm going to go ahead and add my Branch cul-de-sac.
I'm going to add my Main cul-de-sac. Then I'm going to add my intersections, and then I'm going to go ahead and add in my Main and then my Branch. We're going to go ahead and right-click.
We're going to go to Paste Surface. We're going to go ahead and go to my Dev Branch End. I'm going to go ahead and click OK.
I'm going to go ahead and right-click. I'm going to choose Paste again. I'm going to go to my Main End and click OK.
I'm going to go ahead and right-click again. I'm going to go to Paste. I'm going to go ahead and paste in my Intersection Highway Main.
Click OK. I'm going to go ahead and right-click. I'm going to go to Paste.
I'm going to do my Intersection Main Branch. Click OK. Now I'm going to go ahead and right-click on my surface again.
Paste. Now I'm going to go to my EX Highway. Click OK.
And then I'm going to right-click again. Choose Paste. I'm going to paste in my Main.
So Dev Main. Click OK. Then I'm going to go ahead and right-click.
I'm going to go ahead and go to Paste. And then I'm going to paste in my Branch—so my Dev Branch surface.
I'm going to click OK. Now I've pasted in all of these surfaces. I'm going to go ahead and go back out of here.
I'm going to go to my Civ-202. Right-click and go to Surface Properties. I'm going to turn this surface off because I don't want to see it anymore.
I'm going to click Apply and click OK. I'm going to do the same thing with all of my corridor surfaces. So right-click, Surface Properties.
Drop down, No Display, Apply, OK.
Dev Branch, right-click, Surface Properties.
Drop down, No Display, Apply, OK.
Main End, right-click, Surface Properties.
Drop down, No Display, Apply, OK.
Dev Main surface, right-click, Surface Properties.
No Display, Apply, OK.
EX Highway, right-click, Surface Properties.
No Display, Apply, OK.
Intersection Highway Main, right-click, Surface Properties.
No Display, Apply, OK.
Intersection Main Branch, right-click, Surface Properties.
No Display, Apply, OK.
Now that I've turned all of this off, I'm going to go ahead and select the surface that we've created by pasting all of the surfaces in. I'm going to go ahead and go to Object Viewer. And then in my Object Viewer window, if I rotate this out, what you're going to see here is that you're going to have your corridors displaying.
So you're going to have your highway, your road coming in for your Main, your cul-de-sac, your Branch coming across this way, and then your cul-de-sac here. Now that we have this whole surface pasted up and ready to go, I'm going to go ahead and save my drawing. And I'll meet you in the next video.
