Mastering Parametric Modeling in Fusion 360 Workshop

Preparing to Model a Lamp in Fusion 360: Uploading Workshop Files and Setting Up the Project

Gain insights on parametric modeling with VDCI CAD Teacher Fusion Workshop Design 2, and learn how to use user parameters to build a small lamp. Explore how to access free workshop materials, download datasets, and import these files into your Fusion 360 account.

Key Insights

  • VDCI CAD Teacher Fusion Workshop Design 2 provides a comprehensive guide on parametric modeling and using user parameters to construct a small lamp.
  • Participants are able to access free workshop materials, and download the required datasets to progress through the workshop.
  • The workshop also guides attendees through the process of uploading these datasets into Fusion 360, a cloud-based program, and further instructs them on how to start modeling their lamps.

Hello, and welcome to the VDCI CAD Teacher Fusion Workshop: Design 2 – Parametric Modeling. In this workshop, we will look at using parametric modeling and user parameters to build a small lamp. You will see that I am at the vdci.edu website, and if I scroll down, I can find the Fusion 360 section.

This page describes our workshops. Go ahead and enter your email, then click Join the Workshops. On this page, you will see all of our current workshops. In this video, we will be talking about Fusion 201, Design 2 – Parametric Modeling. But if you have not watched our previous workshops, Fusion 001 or Fusion 101, I would suggest going over those workshops first.

For now, I'm going to go to Access Free Workshop Materials for Design 2. On this page, you will see an overview of this workshop. If you have not created your Autodesk account or downloaded Fusion 360, you can see instructions and links to do that now, and here is more information about the workshop. In a second, we will download our datasets and open them in Fusion 360. Here you will also see links to all of the videos in this workshop.

Go ahead and click Download to download your datasets, and you will see the download link appear in the lower left-hand corner of your screen. I will go ahead and click Show in Folder, and this will open up my Downloads folder. When your file is done downloading, right-click, then select Extract All, and extract them in this folder.

When your files are extracted, you will see them here, and we can open Fusion 360 and import them now. I will open up my Data Panel and go to New Project. I will name this project Fusion 201 Parametric Modeling and press ENTER.

Go ahead and open that folder and click Upload. We can select files or drag and drop. I'll click Select Files, browse to my Downloads folder, find Fusion 201, and select all of these files by holding Shift, then click Open.

You'll see your Upload button at the bottom of this window, and we can click Upload. Your Job Status dialog box will appear, and it will show you the status for all of your uploads. Remember, Fusion is a cloud-based program, so once these are uploaded into our Data Panel, we will not need the files anymore on our local drive.

You can delete them if you'd like. I will keep them in my Downloads folder for now. When your uploads are complete, go ahead and close your dialog box.

It may take some time for your icons to update, but you can now see that all of our files are uploaded into our Data Panel. In the next video, we will begin to model our lamp. I will see you in the next video.
