Explore the comprehensive process of transforming elevations into sections using various tools and techniques. This article demonstrates how to copy, erase, extend, and modify elements effectively to create detailed architectural representations.
Key Insights
- The article delves into the process of making elevations into sections by copying the elevations down, erasing unnecessary elements like hatches and symbols, and adjusting elements like the roof using the "extend" and "erase" functions.
- Additional modifications are made to the roof, including slicing through the part of the roof being cut, extending the fascia, and handling roof overhangs. The use of tools such as 'mirror' and 'break at point' are highlighted for these operations.
- The importance of maintaining accuracy is exemplified when the XREF appears to have moved, affecting the roof configuration. The author corrects this by moving the crossing from the end of the outside wall to the dot X of the end of the wall in the elevation. The process of joining lines to create continuous line segments is also explained.

Let's really start making these elevations into sections. So I'm going to roll back, and I'm going to copy these elevations down so that I can have this information to use when I need it. I'm going to go to the Home tab, choose Copy, select these, enter to say I'm done, arbitrary base point, ortho on.
I'm going to copy it down 50 feet, and hit Escape. I want to erase the hatches that are in these images, so I'm going to go E for erase, apostrophe filter, pick the arrow, type H, go down to hatch, add to list, apply, do a window, enter, enter to say I'm done, and I've now gotten rid of my hatches. I'm going to erase out the in progress words, and I'm going to erase out these symbols.
These symbols are on the layer A Anno Sims 48, so I'm going to go erase, apostrophe filter, I'm going to clear the list, I'm going to go to the arrow, type L, select layer, I'm now going to select the layer A Anno Sims 48, go OK, add it to list, apply, and I'm putting a window around that area, and the symbols are now gone. I'm just going to go erase and select these dimensions, control S to save, pan back, check it over, go here, erase out this dimension, control S to save. What I'm going to do next is to start working on the roof, so I'm going to go to my layer, and I'm going to make A heavy my current layer.
You can see looking through this section cut that, I'm going to do this, I'm going to erase out that little box, you can see that my section cut line is going right along this horizontal part of the roof. This horizontal part of the roof here is this horizontal section that's down here, so that is where my roof is being cut. You can also see that the roof will be continuing up from that line, so what I know is that I'm going to be slicing through the roof right through there, and I'm going to make that part of the roof the heavy layer because it's going to be actually cut through it.
I'm going to type EX for extend, extend out to there, to that point right there, because my building section cut is again going through the roof at this area, it's staying consistent with the horizontal, but all of this information behind it is beyond. Now, when I look how the roof is continuing on to the right, you can see that my section cut is forward of the garage, and so the part of the garage roof that's up here will not be seen in my section cut. So, what I need to do is I know that my roof, well let's do this, let's back off a bit.
Do you see how the roof jogs up here? So, what we're showing up here is the garage roof, which goes out to that area, but we're actually cutting through the main house part of the roof. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to do an erase window, and I'm going to erase out the information on the garage, and I will erase out the roof that goes with the garage, and I'm going to extend down to my fascia line. Now, my fascia line is gone right here, so I'm going to do a stretch crossing and just pull the fascia across, and I will extend out to there, EX for extend, out to there, that line.
Now, I'm going to be cutting through this part of the roof, so since I'm cutting through that roof, it wants to be on the heavy layer, and again this is information that is beyond. So, I'm going to do break at point, I will go modify, I'm going to say break at point, there's break, break at point, I want to break this segment at the end of the line, CTRL S to save, MA for match properties, here's the source, here's the destination, enter. Now, when I zoom back, again, this roof, this triangular plane of the roof is going all the way back, and you can see I have my chimney that's going to be popping up there, so I'm going to extend to that roof the chimney.
I'm also going to have my roof overhang happening over here, and the roof overhang information is the same as the roof overhang information that's over here, which is the same information I currently have down here in the elevation. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to draw a line nearest to this part of the roof, perpendicular to the roof over there, and then I'm going to mirror, MI for mirror, I'm just going to type in a W, enter for window, and for the time being, I'm going to grab all of this information from the mid of the last line straight down. And so, you can see that I now have my roof overhang condition happening over here on the right.
I'm going to go trim, TR, crossing, and I'm going to be selecting up here, and so now I at least have my roof overhang going on in that area. Now, something doesn't quite feel right. When I mirrored over here to the right, the roof configuration is incorrect.
So, I'm going to look back and see what could be wrong, and I'm going to start off looking at my walls. Well, you can see that the wall is here, but the elevation of the wall is over there to the left. So, what's happened is that my XREF has moved.
So, I'm going to move crossing from the end of the outside wall to the dot X of the end of the wall in the elevation, YZ at. And so now, if I were to draw a line from the end of here straight down, and again, it's grabbing the line from the end of the continued line that's beyond the X clip. You can see how, in fact, now my roof does go to the proper point.
So, I'm going to back off. I'm going to just erase this out, and I'm going to take the line, which is here, and mirror, window, zoom in. This information, mirror that from the mid of here straight down, and now things start to feel right.
So, stretch crossing from the end of here to the intersection of there, back off, Control-S to save. What's also happening, too, on my elevation is, again, I'm showing front information. The front door and the pop-out bedroom are not there.
So, erase window, get this information out of the drawing. The window is not there. Erase the window out, erase this dimension out.
I don't need that. Control-S to save. I have some line segments that are going on here, so I want to join these entities together.
So, I will go to modify, and I will choose join, and I will select these lines. Hit ENTER to repeat, join these lines, and so I've joined those line segments along, Control-S to save. I would like for you to get your section up to this point, and then we will continue on.
