Developing a Title Block for VDCI with Base Point 00 and New Layer A-TTLB

Creating a Temporary Drawing for Testing the Title Block Design.

Discover the process of creating a new title block file, including setting up a new layer and establishing a base point. Learn how to prepare this drawing file for use in a larger deliverable sheet file, ensuring its successful application in your CAD work.

Key Insights

  • The creation of a title block file begins with setting up a new template, saving it with a specific naming convention, such as VDCITTLB2234, where "VDCI" refers to the Virtual Design and Construction Institute, "TTLB" indicates that the file is a title block, and "2234" represents the size of the image.
  • A new layer, A-TTLB, is created for the title block, assigned a color of 120, and set as the current layer. The base point for all drawings is typically 00.
  • In order to ensure the title block file will work within a deliverable sheet file, a temporary drawing (Working-01) is created. The deliverable sheet file will be a larger format, 22 x 34, requiring a new layout environment.

So let's begin. Let's start working on our title block file. So I'm going to go File, New, and I will use the template.

And I will save the file in my CAD301 folder with the name VDCITTLB2234. So VDCI being the Virtual Design and Construction Institute. Typically in an office you would either have either the office's names or a project name there.

TTLB showing that this is the title block. And 2234 which is the size of the image. And I'm going to overwrite the file.

Now the first thing I'm going to do is to create a new layer. I will go to Layers. I will do a right button, New Layer.

The layer name, A-TTLB. This is the title block layer. I will double click over here to make it the current layer.

And I will give it a color of 120. So again a new layer, A-TTLB. The color is 120.

It is my current layer. I will close the interface. All drawings have a base point.

The base point is typically 00. So I'm going to have 00 as my bottom left corner of the title block. So I'm going to go into the Rectangle command.

Read the prompt. The first corner would be 0, 0. The other corner at 34, 22. Zoom extents.

Zoom real time. And I will save the file. So again, when you have a drawing that includes paper space and model space in it, the only information that ever comes across when you reference one drawing into another is the information that's in the model space.

If I'm going to be using the information in model space or if I'm going to be using the information in paper space, I need to create the source information in model space even though I'm going to use it in paper space. So again, we are in our VDCI title block TTLB file 2234. What I want to do though is to test drive this.

I want to make sure as I'm developing this title block that it will successfully work in the deliverable sheet file. So I'm going to create a temporary drawing that I'm going to be calling Working 01. So I'm going to say File New.

Use the template. And I will save the file with the name Working-01. Now this drawing is not in your data set.

And so when you create the Working-01, you will not see it show up on the list. So again, I look at the top and I can see that I'm in a new drawing called Working-01. Now, our template file has a model tab and it has two tabs.

One is for an 8.5 x 11 environment. The other is for an 11 x 17 environment. This deliverable sheet file will be a 22 x 34.

And so I need to create a new layout environment. So I'm going to go onto the tab right down here. And I'm going to pick with the right button and I'm going to choose Page Setup Manager.

Stop.
