Revit is used by Architects, Engineers, Contractors, and other types of professionals working in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.
With Revit, you can work more efficiently and accurately. This application has many automated tools—such as tools that automatically generate layouts and those that automate the placement of elements—which help speed up the design process. Revisions are easy, and you’ll be able to instantly see how the rest of your design is affected. You can also use Revit to create accurate and comprehensive documentation. In addition, this application allows you to create detailed models of your design so that you can check them for functionality and catch any potential errors early in the design process.
Easy collaboration is another benefit of working with Revit. Not only can multiple users work in the same model at the same time, but they can sync with a central model, which allows them to share and receive changes at any time. The site explains, “San Francisco’s $250 billion Gross Domestic Product (GDP) accounts for nearly a quarter of total economic output in the Bay Area, placing it at the center of the fastest growing regional economy in the United States in 2022.” Not only is the city’s economy growing, but this area is a desirable place to live for many reasons. According to the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, on its webpage titled “Why San Francisco?” this city ranks number one for healthiest city, number one for innovation, number two for best transit, and number three for best city to find a job.
Revit is used by Architects, who design buildings and oversee their construction. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (the BLS), there will be 8 percent job growth in this field over the next ten years, which is double the average U.S. job growth rate of 4 percent. The BLS anticipates about 8,500 new job openings each year for Architects. It states, “Architects are expected to be needed to make plans and designs, particularly in sustainable design, for the construction and renovation of homes, schools, healthcare facilities, and other structures.” According to the BLS, the median salary for an Architect is $93,000 per year.
Revit is also widely used within the field of engineering. Engineers design, develop, and maintain a wide variety of different systems and structures. They often specialize in a specific field like electrical, industrial, mechanical, or civil engineering. Revit has a version—Revit MEP—which is specifically designed for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Engineers. The BLS predicts 9 percent job growth for Electrical and Electronics Engineers over the next decade, with about 19,000 job openings per year. For Mechanical Engineers, it predicts 11 percent growth, with more than 19,000 job openings. According to the BLS, the median pay for an Electrical Engineer is $109,000 per year, and for a Mechanical Engineer, it is about $99,000.
Construction Managers oversee construction projects, from beginning to end, and they may also use Revit. The BLS predicts 9 percent job growth for Construction Managers over the next decade, with more than 45,000 job openings each year. It says, “Over the projections decade, population and business growth will result in the construction of new residences, office buildings, retail outlets, hospitals, schools, restaurants, and other structures.” In addition, it explains that jobs will be generated because of the need to improve infrastructure and to retrofit existing buildings to make them more energy efficient. The Virtual Design and Construction Institute (VDCI) offers a variety of Revit classes. This school specializes in classes related to design, engineering, and construction. It is an Autodesk Authorized Training Center and is also accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET). The Revit Fundamentals Course is designed to help you master the fundamentals of Revit. This is a self-paced class that includes instructor support. There is an introductory unit, where you’ll learn about the interface and workflow. You’ll also learn about building information modeling (BIM). After that, you’ll learn how to design a 3D building model, and you’ll work on a project that includes floors, windows, ceilings, stairs, and other elements. In addition, you’ll create architectural graphics. This course also includes an intermediate unit that covers more advanced skills including using the family editor, scheduling building components, and refining graphics. A one-on-one bonus training session is included.
VDCI also offers a BIM Certificate Program. This course will teach you the skills and workflows for building information modeling (BIM), in addition to getting you to an intermediate level of proficiency in Revit. You’ll take two Revit classes, where you’ll learn both fundamental and more advanced techniques including modeling complex commercial projects, generating construction documents, and refining architectural details. In addition, you’ll take several BIM classes, where you’ll learn about using BIM tools to create construction documents, and will learn how to add detailing. Finally, you can take electives focused on Revit MEP, Revit Structure, or SketchUp Pro. There is also a capstone project, and you’ll get six one-on-one live mentoring sessions.
Another VDCI option is the Revit Certification Course. This course is designed to prepare you for the Autodesk Certified User Exam in Revit. You’ll take two Revit classes, which will bring you to an intermediate level of mastery. City College of San Francisco also offers Revit Training. This school has six different locations in the city. In Revit Architecture I, students learn about Revit and building information modeling (BIM). Instructors cover the interface and tools, automation, coordination of data, building design, and documentation. This class includes a field trip. No previous CAD experience is required.
CAD Simplified, which is based in San Francisco, also offers Revit Training. Its courses run in a live online format. There is a Revit Level 1 class, and a Revit Level 2 class. In Level 1, students learn the interface and beginner skills such as creating walls, doors, and windows, and adding dimensions. They will also learn to move, copy, and rotate objects. The Level 2 class covers more advanced skills such as the differences between geometry and Datum objects. Students will learn to create custom walls with multiple layers and how to create a sloped site.
ONLC Training also offers live online Revit classes. Autodesk Revit Architecture for Novice Users covers a variety of fundamental skills including creating levels and grids, understanding families and components, working with basic sketching and modifying tools, creating a 3D building model, and adding details. Another option is Autodesk Revit Fundamentals for MEP, where students learn about basic HVAC, electrical, and piping/plumbing components. There is also a course called Revit 2023 BIM Management: Template and Family Creation, that is focused on setting up office standards with templates.

This school offers a live online course called Autodesk Revit Architecture, which is designed for Architects, Engineers, and Draftspeople. They will learn both fundamental and advanced Revit skills.
