Craft Academy’s claim to fame is being Sweden’s first coding bootcamp. Founded in 2015, the school is also the first of several ventures and organizations that Gothenburger Thomas Ochman has founded. In 2020, Craft Academy was also the first to bring a cybersecurity bootcamp program to Scandinavia. For years, Ochman’s vision for the school has included diversifying the Swedish tech industry. The school boasts a global staff and attracts an array of international students into their bootcamp programs. In 2017, the school made headlines in Scandinavia for their commitment to recruiting women, in part through scholarships, as the school strives to establish gender parity in their cohorts.

School Locations

The main campus of Craft Academy is in Gothenburg, Sweden, sharing space with the QueensLab tech design consultancy in the bustling Inom Vallgraven district on the Gothenburg River. Craft Academy maintains a second campus in the Kista district in outer Stockholm. The school also hosts online bootcamps that offer the same curriculum as the in-person classes.

What Classes Are Available?

Craft Academy runs two different programs: their Full Stack Web Developer Bootcamp and their Cybersecurity Specialist Bootcamp. The web development course uses a JavaScript and Ruby-based curriculum as students learn React and Rails. Students work with React Router, APIs, websockets, and Heroku, gaining experience with Software as a Service (SaaS), Agile project management, and Behavior Driven Development, as well as Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment.

The cybersecurity course introduces students to computer hardware and software and operating systems before diving into computer networks. Students gain experience with network traffic, system and network administration, and virtual machines, then discover risks and threats, security, forensics, and ethical hacking. Students also learn to assess damage, remediate systems, and develop security reports.

Class Formats

Both bootcamps run on a full-time schedule for 12 weeks, and can be taken in-person at either Craft Academy campus or live online. Students studying remotely are required to live within two time zones of Central European Time, as the course is fully live, including daily standups, paired programming, and learning demonstrations. Students are also expected to commit significant after-work hours to homework and group project development, including “weekend challenges.” The Craft Academy curriculum emphasizes learning by doing. Both courses include multiple hands-on projects, and students in the web development bootcamp program several fully-developed applications. In addition, students in both courses complete a 2-4 week unit of pre-work before the course begins in order to maximize their live learning time.

Admissions Process

Prospective students fill out an eight-question online application in order to initiate the application process and speak with the admissions team. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and students are advised to apply at least two weeks in advance of the cohort they wish to join. Applicants do not need any prior coding experience in order to study at Craft Academy.

Pricing & Payment Options

Tuition for Craft Academy bootcamps costs between 99 500 and 115 500 SEK, which includes all course materials, licenses, taxes, and campus access. Remote students also receive a “Nomads Pack” containing a computer and peripherals for connecting virtually. Female students can receive a 5% discount on tuition. Cybersecurity students can pay tuition with a 36-month payment plan, and students in both courses can work with one of Craft Academy’s financial partners to apply for tuition financing.

Career Support Services

The final week of both Craft Academy bootcamps is dedicated to career preparation, including career coaching, polishing application materials, and practicing interviews. Students also present final projects, and web development students craft their portfolio of work to take on the job market. Additional career support remains available to students after graduation. The school also advertises a job guarantee.

Over the years that Craft Academy has been running its bootcamps, alumni have shared their experiences learning at the school on course review websites. Graduates of Craft Academy programs shared their appreciation for the support of the faculty, with one student saying, “The highly skilled instructors will take you through every step to getting you on track to become a junior full stack developer, including preparing you for future job applications and interviews.” The school’s emphasis on hands-on learning and collaboration created for many students a helpful simulation of on-the-job experience that they can transport into the workforce. As one graduate put it, “Friends, family, outside — you won’t see them for a while,” but “at the other end you’ll come out a better person and be a Junior Fullstack developer.”
