Which Live Online UX Design Bootcamp is Right for Me?

You have several options when it comes to learning UX Design, so we’ve chosen 18 of the best Live Online bootcamps from the top 12 training providers to help you make your decision. But even so, with the variety of considerations including cost, duration, course format, starting level, and more, choosing the perfect bootcamp still isn’t that easy.

Here are the key questions you should ask yourself before enrolling in an UX Design bootcamp. We hope you’ll find the best option based on your learning preferences and goals.

What level should I start at?

Enrolling in the right skill level is pivotal. Skipping over prerequisites can leave you confused, while choosing a course too easy will waste your time and tuition dollars.

Beginner Courses

If you’re new to UX Design, there’s no need to fear. We’ve found 12 beginner courses, with costs ranging from $650 to $16,450. The top options open to beginners include:

  • UX Design Immersive @ General Assembly ($16,450 | 12 Weeks)
  • Sketch Bootcamp @ Noble Desktop ($650 | 12 Hours)
  • UX Design Career Program Part-Time @ Kenzie Academy ($11,000 | 6 Months)
  • UX & UI Design Certificate @ Noble Desktop ($3,495 | 132 Hours)

Note that beginner courses still typically assume basic proficiency with computers.

Intermediate & Advanced Courses

Already comfortable with the basics of UX Design and feel ready to move to an intermediate or advanced class? Consider the following courses which all require some prerequisite knowledge:

How does live online UX Design training work?

Live Online training is synchronous training where participants and the instructor attend remotely. Participants learn and interact with the instructor in real-time and can ask questions and receive feedback throughout the course. Instructors can remote into students’ computers (with prior permission) to assist with class exercises and any technical issues. The courses are hands-on and interactive like in-person training.

You can attend the course from your own home or office. This option works best for those without easy access to a nearby facility, and it has become increasingly popular during COVID-19.

If you attend a virtual training from your home or office, you’ll need a computer with strong internet access and any relevant software installed prior to the course. Most schools provide setup instructions before the course, and some will provide direct assistance.

The instruction takes place via a teleconferencing software like Zoom, Webex, or GoToMeeting, and some schools have their own learning portals.

When are UX Design classes available?

It’s crucial to find a course that fits your schedule. For live online UX Design training, we’ve found flexible scheduling options, including weekday, evening, and weekend courses.

Courses with multiple scheduling options include:

  • UX Design Course @ General Assembly ($4,500 | 60 Hours) is available weekdays or evenings

Courses available evenings only include:

  • UX Design Bootcamp @ Noble Desktop ($1,495 | 30 Hours)
  • UX & UI Design Certificate @ Noble Desktop ($3,495 | 132 Hours)

Full-time Courses

Also note, 2 courses we’ve found require a full-time commitment. These courses are “career-changer” courses that typically span over several months and require 40 or more hours of work per week, whether in the classroom or out-of-class assignments and projects. They also typically require a large financial commitment, although many provide payment plans and financing options. Full-time courses include:

  • UX Design Immersive @ General Assembly, spanning over 12 Weeks for $16,450
  • UX Design Career Program Part-Time @ Kenzie Academy, spanning over 6 Months for $11,000

Due to changing schedules and uncertainty during COVID-19, we recommend that prospective students confirm course availability directly with the school.

Job support typically includes resume writing, help with job applications, portfolio building, and career counseling, but the services vary by provider.

Applications are typically required and many also require remote prework to build essential concepts before the more intensive “live” training. And due to the steep prices (some courses as high as $16,450) many programs provide financing options. See financing notes below but always be sure to confirm with the school and read the terms and conditions. Not all applicants are admitted and approved for financing.

Here are several “career-changer” programs. All the programs include career services (see the provider’s website for details on what is included).

What are the benefits & downsides of live online UX Design classes?

While there are several benefits to live online training, there are a few important things to consider. You should make sure you have a quiet workplace with strong internet access. Learn More About Live Online UX Design Bootcamps

User experience (UX) is the aspect of design that focuses on the functionality of a website or app from the user’s perspective. UX design is a relatively new concept in web design, and is therefore a growing field. While UI (user interface) design focuses on how a website or app looks, UX design ensures the website or app is easily navigated and functional. A UX designer is concerned with the ease of use, functionality, and navigation of a website or app.

As bootcamps are typically project-based, a UX design bootcamp is an excellent way to get hands-on experience that will prepare you for a career in UX design. UX bootcamps focus on the look and feel of the digital product. Students learn about user engagement, development, and prototyping. Students might be given realistic scenarios that simulate what it is like to communicate their findings with a client. Most students leave a bootcamp with a portfolio of work that they can show to potential employers.

Careers for UX Design Bootcamp Graduates

UX design is a fairly new field with immense growth potential as employers are beginning to see the value of investing in beautiful and functional design. Learning UX design is a great way to begin a tech career, build new skills as a designer, or focus more on the creative side of development. On average, UX designers make over $100,000 per year in the US. Many UX designers also receive cash bonuses.

UX design bootcamps prepare participants to start a career in UX design. UX design is a lucrative career path that can also lead to careers in other aspects of design or in UX research. While UX designers prototype, research, and test to ensure users have a positive experience with digital products, a UX researcher analyzes customer and client data collected by the UX designer. They report their findings in order to inform data-driven decisions and assist with future design efforts.

Virtual UX Design Bootcamps

Live online UX design bootcamps are a great alternative to in-person bootcamps as they have virtually all the same benefits. They are live, interactive, and hands-on like in-person training, but the bootcamp can be taken from anywhere that has a reliable internet connection. In live online bootcamps, students ask questions in real-time. With permission, the instructor can access their screen in order to monitor progress or help with any questions.

Noble Desktop, the creator of this tool, offers a 30-hour UX Design Bootcamp in which participants learn about UX design theory, user-centered design, and client engagement, and will be able to show best practices as they complete projects. For their project, students choose to focus on an app or website. The project is broken down into four phases: user engagement, concept development, the iterative process, and client engagement. Students conduct interviews, create user personas, and user scenarios. They go on to build user flows, prototype, and test, and finally ensure the product aligns with business goals.

The UX & UI Certificate is also a popular choice for those who not only want to learn to design websites but want to make informed decisions about how to set up a website based on user experiences. It is a 72-hour course that covers the fundamentals of UX and UI design as well as Sketch, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Live online UX Design bootcamps are also offered by a number of other schools including Thinkiful, Devmountain, and General Assembly. These range from 3-6 months, and have a variety of scheduling options. Thinkful also offers a 6-month intermediate UX/UI Design Flex course that meets 25 hours per week. General Assembly’s UX Design Immersive is an intensive, 12-week course designed to help beginners learn the common tools and concepts needed to start a career in UX design.

Devmountain has both part-time and full-time UX Design course options. Both of these courses are live online and available from anywhere with a reliable internet connection. The part-time course meets for 9 hours per week for 16 weeks while the full-time course meets for 40 hours per week. The part-time course covers conducting research interviews, prototyping tools, informational architecture, visual design principles, and animation. The full-time course teaches wireframes, design principles, informational architecture, prototyping, and animation.

Virtual UX Design Classes

For those who are not quite ready to commit to an entire bootcamp but want to start learning about UX Design, a live online UX Design class is an excellent choice. Sonic Training, for example, offers a UX/UI Design course that teaches the foundational skills of UX/Ui design in just two days.

Noble Desktop has several options available for those interested in UX design. UX Design in a Day is a 6-hour, hands-on training in which students learn the UX design process, including user research, product requirements, information architecture, user flows, sketching and wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing.

Noble also offers a 12-hour Photoshop for Web Design and UI class. (Be sure to note that newer apps like Adobe XD and Sketch are generally preferred over Photoshop for designing apps.) Noble offers a 6-hour Sketch in a Day class in which students learn to design web layouts for mobile, tablet, and desktop. They learn about artboards and layout guides and practice using text, graphics, and styles.

American Graphics Institute offers a 2-day UX Design Course: UX Design Principles class intended for designers, developers, business analysts, and product managers who want to get started with UX design. They also offer a 1-day User Experience for Mobile Devices and Touch Screens course that leads students to create and align a feature set through sketches, wireframes, paper, and interactive prototypes.

Choosing a UX Design Bootcamp

There are several factors to consider when choosing a UX design bootcamp such as cost, duration of the bootcamp, and mentorship. Generally, UX design bootcamps are hands-on learning experiences in which students acquire a solid base in a short period of time, and students can expect to walk away with a work portfolio they can show potential employers. One of the advantages of taking a bootcamp is the job support that is often included in the program. Many bootcamps provide career services whether it be one-on-one mentoring, job search guidance, or simulated work experiences such as working on a team.

UX design bootcamps set you up for a job as a UX designer. They generally last between 30 hours and 6 months and cost between $3,000-$15,000, usually depending on the length of the program. Many of the bootcamps offer payment plans, monthly payment plans, and income share agreement payment options, which means students don’t pay until they’ve secured a job. Students can also look for scholarships and employer reimbursements. Some even have open enrollment; once you’re enrolled in the course you have access to the materials for a certain number of days in order to determine whether you want to continue.
