Turing also offers an Online Try Coding course where students can decide whether coding is right for them. The Online Try Coding course includes an online Zoom class where students can collaborate with others and build their own coding project. Jeff Casimir founded Turing in a Denver basement in 2014. Seven years and 1,200 alumni later, Turing operates a fully online school, leading the way in the tech industry’s shift towards remote and hybrid workplaces. The school uses a nonprofit model of operation to work with Casimir’s goal of chasing talent—not profit. The founder recently reflected that Turing’s mission has always been about “blowing open the access doors to who is allowed to have these high-quality careers where you get to do interesting work, work that matters, and you get paid well for it.” This motivation is part of what steered the school’s decision to operate permanently online. School Locations

Today, all of Turing’s classes run online from Denver. Students participate remotely from a wide range of locations, but they are expected to tune in from locations within two time zones of Mountain Time (e.g., Central, Eastern, Pacific, or Alaskan Time).

Subjects Taught at Turing

Currently, Turing’s courses teach web development, although the school aims to introduce a data analytics course to their curriculum by the end of 2021. What Classes Are Available?

Turing offers two different courses in web development: front-end and back-end. Class Formats

Turing’s front-end and back-end web development courses both run exclusively online on a full-time schedule. In total, students spend 60–80 hours on their course each week. Students begin with five weeks of asynchronous pre-work before joining live online classes and workshops that run seven hours per day, five days per week. After hours, they work on homework and group projects. They also participate in Turing-sponsored social clubs, called Student Circles, formed around identities (like Black at Turing, the Joan Clarke Society for marginalized genders, and QueerQoders), as well as activities and interests like Dungeons and Dragons and open-source coding. The courses run for seven months and are divided into four modules, with week-long breaks between them. Each module features multiple paired and group projects. Students who need extra time to master a module have the option of repeating it at no cost. Classes have typically no more than 30 students per cohort, and the student-to-teacher ratio is 12:1.

Turing workshops are also hosted live online. Typically, they run a few hours and are offered at a range of start times to accommodate students in different time zones or with different work schedules. Prospective students can get a feel for Turing courses through their workshops as well as through recordings of classes that Turing has made available online.

Admissions Process

Prospective students apply to Turing courses using their online application system. The school advises that applicants should spend about an hour on their application, divided between essential contact and demographic information, questions about the applicant’s background, and a logic assessment to evaluate the applicant’s aptitude for acquiring coding skills. Prospective students do not need experience in coding but do need to demonstrate completion of a high-school education or equivalent.

Pricing & Payment Options

As a seven-month program, a Turing course costs $20,000. Two $4,000 diversity scholarships are awarded per cohort, and the school also participates in the GI Bill. Turing works with a handful of different lenders to help finance the cost of tuition and living expenses for participation in its full-time courses. Turing coding workshops, however, are very affordable at $5–15 per event.

Career Support Services

With its project-oriented curriculum, Turing trains students in producing work as professional coders and in showcasing that work for professional coders. Each cohort will participate in events like Turing’s Code Fairs and Demo Competition.

Alumni Outcomes

Turing participates in the Council on Integrity in Results Reporting (CIRR), a self-regulating organization striving to establish norms for coding schools’ outcomes reporting. Turing posts CIRR’s semi-annual reports as well as their quarterly reports on their website. Their blog breaks down interesting statistics from each of their quarterly outcomes reports. The most recent CIRR reports are from the first half of 2020 and are consequently anomalous. Turing’s most recent self-report, for the second quarter of 2021, paints an optimistic outlook for graduates and students who left the program early for in-industry job offers. Turing reports that the median annual salary offer that their students received in this quarter was $77,000.

What Do Students Say?

After spending seven months together, graduates of Turing have had significant first-hand experience with the school. Students have expressed satisfaction with the extended length of Turing’s courses, with one student saying that “the longer program meant, for me, that I was able to learn testing and leave the program feeling confident in my abilities that would lead to a job.” The length of the program also means that graduates will have an impressive portfolio of projects and hopefully strong collaboration skills. There are social benefits to Turing’s long courses as well. Alumni form a community that lasts beyond their program’s end, and many become mentors of current students.

Such an extensive investment in an intensive program can be logistically daunting. One student recalled that “20,000 is a terrifying amount of money to spend on non-traditional education and you cannot work while in the program (not even a little).” The workload is demanding, and instructors challenge students to figure out solutions on their own, as they would in the workplace. Even so, this same graduate qualified their instinctive trepidation, saying that “I believe they deliver on their promises.”
