LEARN Academy aims to deliver a coding education for everybody. The idea for the school arose when co-founders Matt Clark and Rob Kaufman struggled to staff the San Diego branch of their software development business Notch8. The pair founded a coding bootcamp to solve the problem, naming the school LEARN Academy and bringing in Rob’s partner Chelsea Kaufman as CEO and co-founder. Kaufman brings to the school her extensive history working in theatre administration, infusing the organization with the theatrical values of creativity, diversity, and mutual trust. LEARN Academy makes its home in downtown San Diego, in the East Village district. What Classes Are Available?

The curriculum is practice-oriented: Jumpstart students learn to develop personal websites, and full-length bootcamp students complete multiple practical projects throughout the course. The school emphasizes parallel programming throughout the course as students learn to work in ways that closely resemble the web development workplace. Students also work as teams to develop capstone projects. Tuition for the three-day Jumpstart program costs $249, and the four-month bootcamp costs $14,500. LEARN Academy offers multiple opportunities to reduce, defer, or spread out the cost of tuition, offering discounts, student loans, payment plans, Income Share Agreements, and programs for veterans. The school also has two different $3,000 scholarships available for eligible students: one exclusively for students who identify as female, and one for students from all underrepresented demographics in the field of technology.

Career Support Services

Partway through the full bootcamp training, LEARN Academy students participate in a weeklong intensive career readiness unit as they begin to plan for their internships. Students interview with real recruiters at real employers for their internships; both parties rank their preferences so that students work with the business that best fits them and their career aspirations. The final four weeks of the program are spent working in the internship, and alumni continue to receive career support post-graduation.

LEARN Academy advertises that 33% of graduates go on to work full-time jobs at their internship site. Bootcamp alumni have found careers at companies like HP, Salesforce, Verys, Zeal, and LEARN Academy’s sister business, Notch8.
