Web Design Summer Resources

About NextGen's Web Design Summer Camps

Web design is one of the most relevant skills you can learn right now. From business to games, a website without good design won’t get you very far. These days, the stiffest competition is well-designed, optimized for search engines, and responsive on all devices. Create a beautiful portfolio site, make a web-based game, or start your entrepreneurial side gig with web design.

Businesses in every industry are looking for Web Designers to bring them better traffic, colleges are looking for talented coders and designers, and some startups are breaking the rules by hiring coding bootcamp grads without college degrees. Learning web design is for the creative minded who can still jive with tech and high school is the best time to learn.

Why should high schoolers start with web design?

Web design is the easiest place to start learning how to code. HTML and CSS are intuitive coding languages that are rooted in the English language. JavaScript is another great language for beginners because you can see the functionality it provides.

These languages in combination make up the foundation of all websites. Once you learn these two languages, you can learn almost any programming language much more easily. Plus, you can add frameworks like jQuery or ReactJS to take your websites to the next level later.

This knowledge gives you the ability to create almost anything on the web. With our award-winning curriculum, we’re sure you’ll be able to succeed far beyond summer camp. This course is the perfect introduction to web design and development, no matter what industry your passion lies in.

Why learn web design in high school?

There are only a select few bootcamps that focus solely on web design. Focused web design classes for high school students are the most efficient way to learn web design. Get a complete education with graphic design summer courses too.

Learning web design in high school sets you up for internships, college admissions, fun and lucrative side hustle, and the potential for an awesome career. You’ll learn HTML and CSS – the basics of web design – along with Sketch, the best way to create graphics and wireframes.

Why web design perfect for high schoolers

Web design is a great place to start learning when it comes to web development, software engineering, and visual design. Learning web design will equip you with the foundational skills you need for almost any career in tech or design. Not to mention, web design itself is a viable career on its own!

Every single aspect of web design is a transferable skill that can be applied to anything. It’s a great way to try out web development, without investing too much time or money. Get a jump start on a full career in web design or a college program with any coding or design involved from digital marketing to software engineering.

You’ll be learning versatile skills that are the foundations of websites and websites are the foundation of business. That makes these skills extremely valuable in a world where open tech positions disproportionately outnumber people skilled in web design.

Why attend a web design Summer Camp?

Learn everything you need to know about web design to start creating websites for your portfolio over the summer. Don’t worry, you don’t have to know anything before you start, so you can take it before you’ve tried anything.

Maybe you’ve already tried to learn web design a million times and struggled. This is for you too! Our instructors will guide you and answer all of your questions based on their industry experience, so you can finally have that “ah-ha!” moment you’ve been working for.

Sometimes it just isn’t the right teacher or you’re afraid you won’t have time during the school year to actually learn computer science concepts on top of everything else. Take the pressure off and learn everything on the AP exam over the summer.

Create Your Own Websites at NextGen

Want to create your own website? Whether you want to be an entrepreneur or a full-time employee someday or maybe you just want to share your adventures, learning to create your own website is always a good idea. You can showcase your portfolio, share your adventures on your blog, or embed your videos.

Building your own website and designing your own personal brand could be your ticket to a lucrative career before or after college. Building your own website can help you start networking, establish skills that you can use in any tech-savvy job, and show off your new expertise.

Summer Web Design Learning Options

You can learn web design over the summer live online or in New York City. For a focused web design course unlike any other summer camp, try the Web Design Summer Course live online.

If you want to learn in person, you should take the Web Design Summer Camp in New York City. Both web design summer courses will teach you how to design websites with Sketch and how to write HTML and CSS to create responsive websites of your own. Then, you’ll learn JavaScript to make your front end complete with dynamic elements.

A Graphic Design Summer Camp in NYC or a live online Graphic Design Summer Course is also a great idea for the aspiring designer of any kind. You’ll master Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop, the most important design tools for the web.

Build your own website at NextGen

At NextGen, you’ll learn from the top web developers and use real-world examples in each section of our immersive courses. With your class, you’ll receive our step-by-step workbooks that are trusted by universities around the world.

Web Design Course Overview

Our Web Design Summer Course has been a staple of our school for many years. We are committed to developing and maintaining the best web dev class on the market, which is why we've created award-winning web workbooks, instructors, and resources for our Web Development instruction.

In this program, students will learn how to build and design the front-end of websites. This course provides students with a solid introduction to coding and design because we start with HTML and CSS, which are the easiest (and arguably the most essential) coding languages to learn. We then progress into the more advanced CSS (Flexbox and Grid) which is now an essential skill for modern web developers. Lastly, the students move onto JavaScript which is used by professional developers to create nearly all of the interactive features and functions that users see on the web today. Because students are both coding and designing, this course will engage and develop both their creativity and their technical savvy at the same time!

This course will guide students through the processes of creating a website from scratch. The curriculum first introduces students to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). HTML is a basic, need-to-know programming language that allows coders to outline the structure of their webpage and tag (i.e., label) each section so that the browser can determine how to render the page to meet the programmer's exact specifications.  HTML is also used for adding links, images, and forms to web pages. Next, students learn how to style their web pages using CSS, Flexbox, and Grid. CSS (which stands for Cascading Style Sheets) is the language used to aesthetically style web pages including creating layouts, color schemes, fonts, visual designs. Flexbox and Grid are used to layout, align, and reorder webpage content, as well as make it adapt to different size screens. You’ll learn how both techniques are useful, and when to use each. You’ll also learn how to use Bootstrap (which uses Flexbox) to rapidly code up pages without having to write as much CSS. Finally, students will explore JavaScript, which is the most popular coding language in the world! JavaScript allows students to make their websites dynamic and reactive to user input.

In other words, Bootcamp students learn all three of the major components of web design: structure (HTML), style (CSS, Flexbox, and Grid), and user functionality (JavaScript).

Why Learn Web Design at NextGen?

Easy to Learn: Out of all of the programming languages, HTML and CSS are the easiest to learn and implement. There is no math or conditional logic used to write these languages as there is in Python, Java, and many others. Instead, HTML and CSS are intuitive coding languages that are rooted in the English language. Despite their rudimentary basis, command of these languages is a non-negotiable for anyone involved in digital communications, especially since they provide the basis for understanding a wide range of advanced languages and applications.

Learn 3 Languages + Frameworks: Within this 2-week course, students will engage with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and CSS frameworks of Flexbox and Grid. Each of these is a separate, marketable skill on a resume and are applicable to many fields in addition to website creation, including email design, front-end app design, and back-end functionality in games and apps. While some courses take weeks to learn and practice each, our activity-based curriculum enables students to learn quickly and do more starting on the very first day.

Capitalize on Ideas: By learning web development skills, entrepreneurs and creative minds open the door for endless business opportunities. Students can use the skills they learn in this class to create websites for their new business idea or to earn money as a freelance web developer. Even having the ability to collaborate with others when building a new site can help students bring their ideas to life.

Ability to Create Anything: The uses of the programming languages taught in this class are endless. HTML can be used to build basic websites, create beautiful emails, edit web pages, build resumes, and much more. Additionally, CSS and Flexbox and Grind can be used to design the front-end of almost anything digital, including packaging, icons, logos, and more. Finally, learning JavaScript will develop students' computation logic, which supports their problem-solving skills and contributes directly to their growth in core subjects, especially in Math.

Award-Winning Curriculum: Dan Rodney is the curriculum developer for this section. Dan is a master web-developer, web designer, as well as instructors with over 20 years of teaching experience. Dan has built many websites in his life, including this one!

Who should attend our Web Design Summer camp?

Our web development course is designed primarily for teens, but college students are welcomed as well! There is no math or coding pre-requisite for this course.

This course is a great introduction to the world of programming, computer science, and design. The class applies to students with a variety of different, due in part to the wide range of content that we cover, in addition to the personalized nature of our instruction. This an excellent fit for students with business ideas or those looking to gain technical skills that can be used to find lucrative freelance work. Web development is an important skill that will help all students both in school and throughout their lives, no matter what career they choose!

Web Dev Course Detailed Overview

This course combines four different courses into one: Web Dev 1, Web Dev 2, JavaScript, and Flexbox.

The first part of this course covers HTML syntax such as headers, paragraphs, body, title, and meta tags. Students will then learn how to accurately input images, followed by an organic transition into styling pages using CSS. Students will learn how to use the class system in CSS as well as CSS tags such as div, background-color, borders, and more. The first part of the course will finish with students using developer tools to understand how advanced layouts are created, followed by building a fluid layout of their own for their personal website project.

The second part of the course focuses on design. Students use advanced CSS topics using Flexbox and Grid to create responsive layouts that are optimized for any size screen.

Finally, in the third part of the course, students learn how to use JavaScript. We will start with the language fundamentals but then quickly move into more advanced concepts and skills. The course will teach students how to use plug-ins to increase the usability of their site.
