# Excel Level I: Fundamentals

## Overview

This beginner Excel course introduces the core features of Microsoft Excel used to build clear, functional spreadsheets from the ground up. Students learn how to navigate the interface, enter and organize data, manage rows, columns, and worksheets, and perform basic calculations with formulas, AutoSum, and essential functions.

The course also covers formatting, conditional formatting, charts, tables, printing, templates, and foundational Excel shortcuts. Students leave with a solid understanding of how to create polished worksheets and use Excel more confidently for everyday business and administrative tasks. After completing the Excel Level I course, you’ll receive access to our companion video suite, featuring beginner-level video lessons viewable on desktop, mobile, and tablet. These video tutorials explain popular Excel concepts in easy-to-follow steps.

## What you'll learn

- Get comfortable with the Excel interface and learn multiple ways to enter and organize data in a worksheet.
- Work with rows, columns, and worksheets by inserting, deleting, hiding, grouping, and managing spreadsheet elements.
- Build foundational Excel skills with Autofill, basic calculations, AutoSum, and essential functions such as SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN, and COUNT.
- Use formulas more effectively with absolute references, logical true/false tests, text functions, and multi-input functions.
- Format spreadsheets for clarity with cell formatting and conditional formatting that highlights data based on specific rules.
- Create visual reports with column charts, line charts, pie charts, sparklines, and Excel Tables.
- Manage workbooks more efficiently using Freeze Panes, printing tools, display options, templates, and essential keyboard shortcuts and Excel tips.
- Reinforce key concepts through end-of-class projects designed to review what you learned.

#### Autofill

- Explores Excel's amazing ability to predict and extrapolate patterns

#### Calculations

- Perform mathematical expressions and review the Order of Operations rule

#### AutoSum Functions

- Review the five key functions: Sum, Average, Max, Min, and Count Numbers

#### Absolute Reference

- Changing a cell reference into a constant, which is necessary for certain calculations

#### True or False

- Tests to see whether criteria is true/false

#### Text Functions

- Introduces functions used to modify text in Excel

#### Multi-Input Functions

- More advanced functions that require more than one input

- The addition of effects to an Excel document to provide visual instruction

## Instructors

### Brian McClain — Program Director & Senior Instructor

Brian McClain is an experienced instructor, curriculum developer, and web developer. Brian served as Director for a coding bootcamp before joining Noble Desktop in 2022, where he is now a lead instructor and course developer for both JavaScript and Python. He teaches Web Development, JavaScript, Python for Data Science, Machine Learning, and AI. Prior to Noble, he taught Python Data Science and Machine Learning as an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Westchester County College.

Brian is also an active industry professional in the field of generative AI app development. His website and iOS app, Artmink, provides appraisals of art and antiques from user-uploaded images.

### Mourad Kattan — Program Director & Instructor

Mourad Kattan is an instructor and Program Director of Business, Finance, & Excel at Noble Desktop, teaching classes and designing courses in Excel, finance, accounting, and financial modeling.

Before Noble Desktop, Mourad worked as a financial analyst at Credit Suisse and H/2 Capital Partners. In those positions, he used advanced analytical and financial skills to evaluate a variety of investments.

Mourad graduated from the University of Pennsylvania summa cum laude and is part of the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society.

### Adebayo Norman — Instructor

Adebayo "Ade" Norman is a Senior Software Trainer with over 14 years of experience in the classroom. He is a training professional with vast troubleshooting/help desk experience and thousands of hours of software training & delivery experience. His specialty is in the In-person/Online Hybrid training environment needed in these new & changing times.

### Garfield Stinvil — Senior Instructor

Garfield is an experienced software trainer with over 16 years of real-world professional experience. He started as a data analyst with a Wall Street real estate investment company & continued working in the professional development department at New York Road Runners Organization before working at Noble. He enjoys bringing humor to whatever he teaches and loves conveying ideas in novel ways that help others learn more efficiently.

Since starting his professional training career in 2016, he has worked with several corporate clients including Adobe, HBO, Amazon, Yelp, Mitsubishi, WeWork, Michael Kors, Christian Dior, and Hermès. 

Outside of work, his hobbies include rescuing & archiving at-risk artistic online media using his database management skills.

### What version of Excel does this course cover?

The instructors typically present using Excel 2019 or Office 365. However, you can use Excel 2013 or 2016 as well; the exercises and interface are compatible with what we teach (with some minor differences that the instructor will explain).
