We Can Code IT is an online and in-person coding bootcamp that helps adults change careers in just 14 to 16 weeks. Graduates of these programs are qualified to begin work as software developer, test-engineers, and web developers. Courses include Java Full Stack, Digital Online Java Full Stack, C# Full Stack, and Java Full Stack Hybrid. Students in these programs will gain essential skills in coding, through hands-on training and high-quality instruction.

Instructors for We Can Code I.T. are specially trained on best practices for teaching coding in a problem/project based approach. We Can Code I.T. has a 94% placement rates among their graduates. This company is committed to the promotion of social equity through technology education.

We Can Code IT was founded in 2013 by CEO Mel McGee. McGee is a developer with over 20 years of experience who envisioned a new kind of training ground for underrepresented people who are interested in tech careers. An inclusive environment is essential to McGee because she did not experience a welcoming or diverse culture for most of her career. After eight years, We Can Code IT maintains a student body where 70% of learners are women, people of color, and/or people from low-income backgrounds. McGee and the rest of the team at We Can Code IT believes that even the most marginalized folks deserve a shot at a fulfilling and lucrative career.

School Locations

We Can Code IT has two campuses in Ohio; one in Cleveland and the other in Columbus. The Cleveland campus is located in the Murray Hill neighborhood (or as it is colloquially known: Lincoln Village). This campus is located close to multiple highways and public transportation options. It is less than three miles from the Cleveland Lakefront overlooking Lake Erie and is near the west bank of the Cuyahoga River. The Columbus campus is in the Old North Columbus neighborhood just east of the Olentangy River.

What Classes Are Available?

We Can Code IT offers four coding bootcamps in C# and Java. C# is only available full-time and in-person while the Java bootcamp can be accessed on a part-time or remote basis in addition to full-time. The C# Full Stack Coding Bootcamp and the Java Full Stack Coding Bootcamp both offer complete beginners the opportunity to learn software development in 14 weeks. Both programs are full-time and accessed in-person. The Remote Online Coding Bootcamp offers the same material, just spread over 22 weeks and in a fully online environment.

All of these courses teach the most commonly used languages (HTML, CSS, TDD, and JavaScript) in a team environment, giving students a real-world experience of solving problems and developing solutions by collaborating with others. A typical day as a student in these programs includes pairing exercises, coding work, team projects, and a Q&A session at the end of the day to ensure the material is being retained.

The Part-Time Hybrid Coding Bootcamp offers a combination of online coursework and “code jams” every other weekend, from 9 am to 5 pm on both Saturdays and Sundays. The material is taught in modules that are designed to allow students to learn at their own pace during the week.

Class Formats

Both the Columbus and Cleveland campuses at We Can Code IT offer full-time and part-time schedules for their bootcamps. However, part-time classes are only available in the remote or hybrid models; full-time students must attend in person. The full-time bootcamp lasts for 14 weeks and the part-time bootcamp lasts 22 weeks.

Admissions Process

At We Can Code IT, the basic eligibility criteria for all students is that they have either a GED or a high school diploma and are authorized to work in the United States. If students have questions and want to learn more about the programs available, they can schedule a phone meeting before applying.

The first step toward admission is for interested students to complete a short application providing basic demographic information, previous education information, and career goals. Next, applicants must complete an assessment to make sure they have some foundational skills to be successful. The assessment contains a coding lesson and a small test project. The final step is a short interview before successful applicants will be offered admission to the program.

Pricing & Payment Options

The coding bootcamps at We Can Code IT are $14,900 and include an additional $125 registration fee. The tuition is the same if you take online or in-person classes. Students who qualify are also eligible for up to $2,000 in low-income and diversity grants and scholarships.

Additionally, there are a few financing options available for We Can Code IT students. If the student is an Ohio resident, they are eligible to participate in an Income Share Agreement where students only begin paying toward their tuition once they are employed after graduation. Ohio residents might also qualify for a grant through the Ohio Means Jobs program or an HFLA loan (this option is for the Cleveland campus only). We Can Code IT also accepts payments through the VA/GI-Bill.

Career Support Services

Students enrolled in a We Can Code IT Bootcamp are exposed to Career Support Services weekly throughout their coursework. Former students report that these services extend outside of what they expected. They received assistance with building their resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles, but they also had help creating questions to ask in interviews and developing a list of must-haves and non-negotiables for a new career to help guide them through their job search.

Alumni Outcomes

The most recently available alumni outcome data was collected over the past three years. From the alumni who reported information, 89% of people attained job placement within six months of graduation. They also reported a $56,000 average annual salary and have been hired at well-known companies such as JP Morgan Chase and Progressive Insurance.
