Juno is the first school in Canada to offer Income Share Agreements. The school’s Web Development Immersive Bootcamp has a “Pay What You Can” plan that allows students to pay as little as $1 upfront during the educational period and only begin to make regular payments once the graduate earns at least $50,000 per year.

Formerly known as HackerYou, Juno College of Technology is one of very few private technology bootcamps that are women-founded and women-owned. Heather Payne, a self-taught coder, first founded the nonprofit Ladies Learning Code (now renamed Canada Learning Code) in 2011. The demand for inclusive coding instruction far exceeded the capacity of the nonprofit very quickly. In 2012, Payne established what would become Juno College in Toronto with the mission to deliver a quality coding education to demographics that are underrepresented in the technology industry. Just one year later, Payne was listed among Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women. Today, the school continues to expand how it fulfills that mission, offering pioneering income-share agreements and hiring a racially diverse team of instructional and operational staff.

Juno College of Technology’s in-person campus is located in two neighboring units in the Old Toronto area of Toronto, Ontario. Sandwiched between the residential Alexandra Park neighborhood and the Fashion District, the school is just three blocks away from Toronto’s famed Chinatown. Working environments on campus are open and airy, and students and staff are both welcomed and encouraged to bring their dogs to school.

What Classes Are Available?

Juno College of Technology offers four courses and two full bootcamps. The courses in web development and data analytics are both introductory-level classes, and the courses in JavaScript and UX design are for intermediate learners who already have some coding experience. Students of the school’s two bootcamps in web development and data analytics are expected to have intermediate-level skills in the course’s subject. Web Development Bootcamp students learn advanced JavaScript and APIs and learn to use React and Firebase. Data Analytics Bootcamp students learn Python and Python libraries, SQL, and Tableau. Courses at Juno College of Technology can be taken in-person at the school’s Toronto campus or live online. The UX Design course is offered on a part-time basis only, but all the other introductory courses can be studied part-time on two evenings per week or on weekends, or in a full-time, Monday through Friday, accelerated format. Bootcamps are available on full-time schedules only and take place over nine weeks. The Juno College of Technology curriculum emphasizes practical learning and developing professional portfolio projects. The cost of instructional materials is included in the cost of registration, although the school advises that students budget for web hosting, domain names, and portfolio designs. Admissions Process

For courses and bootcamps, prospective students of Juno College of Technology must apply to study at the school. All students submit an online application. After an initial application evaluation, prospective bootcamp students also submit a personal statement and resume and then take a technical assessment to demonstrate that they have intermediate skills in the subject they are applying to study. After passing the technical assessment, prospective bootcamp students interview with the admissions team, who will determine whether the student is accepted, referred to a lower-level course for further study, or invited to reapply later. The school emphasizes that they look for eager learners and friendly team players to populate their classes.

Pricing & Payment Options

Juno College of Technology courses cost 2,000 CAD (plus tax), and bootcamps cost 12,995 CAD. Graduates of the school’s courses earn stackable discounts for bootcamp tuition. Students can finance their bootcamp tuition through the school’s partner, Financeit. The school also offers a limited number of Income Share Agreement plans per cohort for citizens and permanent residents of Canada. The Income Share Agreement (ISA) program that Juno College of Technology operates starts with a pay-what-you-can down payment, ends after two years of payments while students are employed full time, and is capped at 1.5 times the cost of tuition.

Before the first week of their bootcamp, students at Juno College of Technology begin working on career development and continue working 1-on-1 with a career coach throughout the program. Juno College of Technology is the first and only Canadian coding school to participate in the Council on Integrity in Results Reporting (CIRR), the voluntary regulatory organization of coding bootcamp results reporting. In the second half of 2019, 97.5% of web development bootcamp students graduated on time, and 84.6% of those graduates were employed within 180 days of bootcamp completion. These graduates’ started earning a median salary of 52,000 CAD and found jobs with titles such as Software Engineer, Front End Developer, and Full Stack Developer. Employment rates of new graduates dipped to 60.2% in the second half of 2020, likely attributable to the turbulent mid-pandemic job market, but the median salary ticked up to 55,000 CAD. The school reports that overall, the men who graduate from their web development program average 50,000 CAD annually, while women and nonbinary graduates average 55,000 CAD annually. Students of Juno College of Technology have found careers at corporations like Cineplex, Loblaw Digital, and TD Bank.

Another graduate appreciated that the teachers “had time outside class to help students who are struggling and went above [and] beyond in their attempt to make this one of the best learning experiences possible.” Some graduates were disappointed in the post-graduation career support, but the post-graduation community support received high marks. One student observed that the school has “a great alumni network,” adding that “it’s exciting to see that alumni want to come back to support students by mentoring and volunteering their time.”
