ITTA—the English acronym stands for “Inform. Train. Transform. Accelerate.”—is a leading IT school in French-speaking Switzerland. Founded initially as IT Training Academy, the school has been in existence since 2004. It welcomes some 3500 students per year and employs a network of 250 “teaching consultants”.

The school has received the seal of approval from the Swiss quality label eduQua and holds ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001 and 21001 certification, the latter being the framework that extends 9001 quality standards to the field of education. In addition, ITTA is an Adobe Certified Training Center, a Microsoft Certified Partner for Learning Solutions, and an official CISCO training center. Finally, the school is a Pearson VUE examination center that can administer third-party certification tests to its students.

School Locations

ITTA has locations in two cities, Geneva and Lausanne. The Geneva campus is located on the Route des Jeunes in the Carouge area (tram: Bachet-de-Pesay or P&R Étoile). It is located across from the La Praille mall, which offers plenty of options for midday refreshment, and the Stade de Genève, home of Geneva’s Servette FC.

There are two campuses in Lausanne: one is in the Rue des Côtes de Montbenon, 16, in the Flon District, a pedestrianized area featuring a wide array of restaurants and shops. Subjects Taught at ITTA

ITTA is another of those schools with enormous course catalogs. It breaks its curriculum down into four different departments: IT & Development, Microsoft Office & Collaborative Tools, Management & Soft Skills, and Multimedia & Digital Marketing. Close to 600 regularly-scheduled classes are available; further courses are offered by private arrangement.

The IT department includes such themes as cloud computing, systems and networks, databases and analysis, and cybersecurity and ethical hacking. Under the MS Office rubric, prospective students will find classes in all the relevant Office and Microsoft 365 programs, including ample coverage of such popular software as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. The Management & Soft Skills section of the catalog incorporates project management as well as numerous courses in personal productivity, team-building, and cooperation. Finally, the Multimedia & Digital Marketing department is where students will find classes in everything from the Adobe Creative Cloud and CAD to digital marketing subjects such as the alphabetic trio of SEO, SEM, and SEA.

ITTA makes corporate training available, the curricula drawn either from the regular catalog or from an expanded one that includes classes that aren’t regularly scheduled (such as an entire array of AWS courses.) Tailor-made classes are also available by private arrangement.

What Classes Are Available?

Classes at ITTA generally last from one to three days, although there are exceptions. The catalog targets specific skills rather than offering complete overviews of subject matter; ITTA isn’t the school for a bootcamp-type education that will produce mastery over large areas of IT. Instead, it is a place for filling in knowledge gaps or continuing along a path upon which one has already set foot.

The IT department accounts for the most classes at ITTA by a wide margin. The net is cast wide to include systems and network training. The 34 classes available in CISCO networking represent the largest selection of such courses in francophone Switzerland and are designed to prepare students for CCNA and CCNP examinations. The topics covered are highly specialized, and include Implementing Cisco Advanced Call Control and Mobility Services, Troubleshooting Cisco Data Center Infrastructure, and Implementing DevOps Solutions and Practices Using Cisco Platforms. Linux, Windows Server Administration. By arrangement, AWS are also represented in the course offerings.

For data science, classes cover the application of Microsoft Azure, Power BI, and SQL. Under the cybersecurity rubric, classes are available that prepare students for such certifying examinations as CISSP, CISSA, and CISSO, as well as ISO/IEC 27001. The offense side of the cybersecurity equation isn’t neglected: a certified professional ethical hacker curriculum is also available. And finally, amidst offerings in C#, C++, Docker, and Kubernetes, classes are available in Java (specifically with regard to app development) and R and Python (with data analysis the main focus.)

Under the Microsoft Office rubric, the prospective student will encounter a complement of 63 courses from which to choose. The program that receives the most attention, as it does in most other tech schools, is what is viewed widely as Microsoft’s most useful product, Excel. The classes in the software range from Initiation to Excel to a trio of intermediate classes: Becoming More Efficient with Excel and two more targeted undertakings in Formulas and Functions and Preparation for Data Analysis. Those can be followed by advanced-level courses, which include Analyzing Data, Giving Tables Visual Impact, and Dashboards. ITTA then goes on to offer expert-level seminars, such as Recording Macros and Introduction to VBA (there are subsequent VBA classes as well), PowerPivot, and Formulas and Functions for Financial Management. These segue into a quintet of Power BI classes, ranging from an introduction to the software to DAX Formulas and Data Analysis Expressions. While the last-named class lasts five days in order to cover the 120 formulas it covers, and the other Power BI classes last three days, most of the Excel classes themselves are briefer one- or two-day affairs.

For those wishing to become certified in Excel, there are also classes that are specifically designed to prepare students for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) exams in both Excel Associate (two days) and Excel Expert (three days) levels. ITTA is even able to administer the examinations.

ITTA teaches beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert classes in Microsoft Word. As with Excel, there are also classes to prepare for the MOS exams at the Associate and Expert levels. Beyond these classes in Microsoft’s best-known programs, the school also offers at least one course in the following Office and 365 programs: Access, Forms, One Drive, One Note, Outlook, Planner, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, and even Yammer.

Management and Soft Skills is a rubric that at ITTA encompasses a host of practical skills in project management along with a further host of courses and seminars in business intangibles. A number of project management methods are taught, including Agile and Scrum, Change Management Institute, the Swiss method HERMES, and PMI. A set of DevOps courses is also available. Examples of the soft skills seminars taught by ITTA might include Organizing One’s Ideas using Mind Mapping, Managing Stress to Avoid Burn-Out, Developing Confidence and Self-Respect, and Negotiation and Influence. Managerial skills are included as well, with courses with titles such as Managing Efficiently through Emotional Intelligence, Anticipating, Managing and Overcoming Conflicts, Delegating to Gain in Efficiency, and even a workshop that teaches teamwork using Lego bricks for Serious Play®.

Finally, the 80 classes that fall under Multimedia and Digital Marketing begin (alphabetically at least) with the school’s Adobe Creative Cloud offerings. Photoshop is the subject of two two-day classes, while InDesign is taught on four levels and Illustrator on three. Other aspects of the Adobe Cloud taught at ITTA include Animate, Captivate, Dreamweaver (with Bootstrap, three levels), Premiere Pro, and the rarely encountered Substance Painter.

Autodesk is not ignored. Students interested in computer-assisted design will find two levels of classes in both AutoCAD (2D) and Revit. Maxon’s Cinema 4D is also available in three different courses, as are introductions to Apple Final Cut Pro, SketchUp, and Unreal Engine.

In addition to a workshop in SEO and SEM that runs for two days, ITTA offers the usual bouquet of digital marketing classes in such familiar fields as Facebook Marketing (two levels), Google Analytics, and Google Ads (two levels). There are also classes in Facebook Business Manager, B2B Social Media Selling with LinkedIn, and Email Marketing, along with some offerings in what might be styled digital marketing soft skills: Inbound Marketing and Automation, E-reputation, Growth Hacking, and Community Management.

Class Formats

Classes at ITTA are taught live, either in Geneva or Lausanne (the overwhelming majority of the Lausanne classes are at the Le Flon campus) or online. In specially arranged corporate classes, a blended learning model (i.e., partly online live and partly elearning) may be employed.

Written documentation is included with every class. Final exams fall into two categories: those designed by the school to provide students with certificates of accomplishment and those ordered by third-party providers (such as Adobe), which the school can administer. Some classes include a voucher to cover the cost of such exams.

Admissions Process

The school’s staff is available to discuss the placement of prospective students. Pre-tests are available for some classes as well so that students are placed in the correct class for their level of knowledge. Admissions are otherwise open.

Pricing & Payment Options

The pricing of ITTA’s shorter classes follows something of a pattern. As a general rule, half-day classes are priced at Fr 400 (CHF, Swiss Francs; roughly $420), full-day classes at or around Fr 700 ($735), and two-day classes at or around Fr 1200 ($1280). The pattern breaks down, however, for the longer courses.

Turning to specific examples, the five-day Implementing and Administering CISCO Solutions is priced at Fr 3950 ($4155) while Implementing Cisco Advanced Call Control and Mobility Systems, which also runs for five days, prices out at Fr 4500 ($4735). Among the three-day classes, Implementing Automation for CISCO Collaboration Solutions costs Fr 3000 ($3150). Python Fundamentals, which also runs for three days, is priced at Fr 2300 ($2420), while, confusingly, the Security and Ethical Hacking Initiation (again three days) carries a price tag of Fr 2250.

The one-day Excel classes, ranging from Fundamentals to the Power Query Expert class, are priced at Fr 750. The few two-day Excel classes, such as the VBA Fundamentals entry, are priced at Fr 1300.

In the PMI department, five-day classes range in price from Fr 3750 ($3945) (Professional in Business Analysis) to Fr 4300 ($4525) (Certified Associate Project Manager.) Risk Management Professional, a four-day entrant, costs Fr 3000, while the three-day Scheduling Professional costs Fr 2500. The soft skills classes are consistently priced at Fr 650 for the one-day classes (such as Understanding and Managing Your Emotional Competencies or the Lego Serious Play® workshop) and Fr 1300 for the more frequently encountered two-day courses (e.g., Developing Creative Potential).

The Adobe classes are consistently priced at Fr 700 for the one-day courses and Fr 1200 for the two-day ones. The two-day WordPress classes, on the other hand, cost students Fr 1300. The SEO/SEA classes are priced at Fr 700 for the one-day classes and Fr 1400 for the two-days ones, while, among the one-day digital marketing and strategy classes, E-reputation is priced at Fr 700, and Mobile Marketing at Fr 900. Digital Marketing Strategy, a two-day undertaking, is priced at a proportional Fr 1400.

Although the school does not offer any financing options, it will help students find their way through the options provided by the national and canton governments. Thus the school participates in the Temptraining scheme, which is devoted to assisting temporary workers to upskill themselves. It also accepts Chèques Formations de l’État de Genève, an annual subsidy offered by the government to help adults finance their continuing education. What Do Students Say?

Online reviews of ITTA are rarer than proverbial hen’s teeth. Not even the school’s website provides the usual complement of favorable reviews.

Of the reviews that are available, one was positive, saying, “the staff was very pleasant and accommodating during the organization of the class. [The teacher] knew his subject very well, expressed it in a calm and poised manner, and referred to numerous concrete examples in order to reinforce the theory. I recommend it.” The only other remotely recent review was negative, from a reviewer who felt that the five-day exam preparatory class he took was just a summation of a 400-page book he could have gotten and read on his own.
