During training, students learn job application skills including resume and cover letter building, technical/non-technical interviewing, and creating a competitive portfolio. The founder of Epicodus, Michael Kaiser-Nyman, didn’t set out to start a coding school. While he was still working as the owner of a tech company in the Bay Area, Kaiser-Nyman struggled to reconcile his difficulty staffing coders in his business with the fact that so many people couldn’t find jobs. Taking matters into his own hands, Kaiser-Nyman established Epicodus in Portland, Oregon in 2012. Since its inception, the school has sought to bridge the employment gap by providing high-quality, financially accessible training in coding to students from a diverse range of backgrounds. Epicodus is intentional about diversity in its student body. The curriculum explicitly incorporates readings, discussions, and pedagogy to make the tech industry more inclusive of underrepresented racial groups as well as transgender and gender-nonconforming people.

School Locations

Since its establishment in Portland, Oregon, Epicodus has also expanded to a new location in Seattle. Epicodus offers its courses live online on Pacific time.

Epicodus focuses on teaching essential web development coding skills. Their certificate program uses a full stack curriculum, equipping students with the skills to do programming work in front end or back end web development.

What Classes Are Available?

Epicodus offers two core courses. In Introduction to Coding, Epicodus students acquire skills in programming languages like HTML, CSS, Markdown, and JavaScript, while familiarizing themselves with tools like Git, Bootstrap, and jQuery.

For the Full Stack Certificate program at Epicodus, students can choose between focusing on Ruby or C#, depending on which location and which session they register for. Currently, the Ruby edition of the Full Stack Certificate is offered only at the Portland campus, and the Introduction to Coding is available only in Portland and online.

Class Formats

Students can take the Epicodus Full Stack Certificate program full time (27 weeks) or part time (40 weeks), in Portland, Seattle, or live online. No matter which version students take, by the end they will have spent at least 800 hours on classroom coding. The Epicodus Introduction to Coding class lasts just over a month and is available on a part-time schedule at the Portland campus or live online.

All class sizes average around 30 students. Online classes combine videoconference lessons and discussions with paired programming over Discord. The Epicodus curriculum is project-oriented, and all students will develop both short independent projects, longer paired projects, and everything in between. At the end of their course, students will present the results of a project of their own design. Students who secure a full-time job before the internship ends may have the option of graduating early; everyone else continues studying computer science and additional career preparation.

Epicodus has made their student handbook and their pre-work lessons freely available to students interested in learning more about what studying at the school is like. In addition, Epicodus offers free coding workshops live online every month.

Admissions Process

Admission into Epicodus is a two-step process. First, prospective students complete a brief form including demographic and contact information. Then, Epicodus admissions administer a writing exercise to determine the prospective student’s suitability for their programs. Anyone can study in Epicodus’s Introduction to Coding class, including minors, and anyone who is legally authorized to work can study in their Full Stack Certificate program.

Pricing & Payment Options

Epicodus strives to make coding accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial background. Its part-time Introduction to Coding is priced at $100 for the entire course. The base price of their Full Stack Certificate program is $11,700, and students who pay early receive a $3,900 discount. Epicodus also offers a range of options for financing, including an Income Share Agreement to repay tuition after the student has joined the workforce.

Career Support Services

Career development is deeply embedded in the Full Stack Certificate program and goes beyond regular participation in regular career-oriented instruction during the coursework portion of the program. After getting a rigorous 80 hours of preparation of workshop experience in interviews and job application materials, all students studying in the Full Stack Certificate program will spend at least 150 hours working in a web development internship, which Epicodus will help students secure, as a curriculum requirement before graduation.

Alumni Outcomes

Epicodus not only participates in the Council on Integrity in Results Reporting, the body that governs voluntary outcomes reporting from coding schools, it also helped to found the organization. The school divides its students’ outcomes by in-person campus; they have not yet reported outcomes on online cohorts. At the Portland campus, 55.8% of students graduate on time and 71.4% land a job within 180 days. Their students’ median starting salary is $60,000. At the Seattle campus, 72.1% of students graduate on time and 58.8% land a job within 180 days. Their median starting salary was higher, however, at $75,000. Most graduates take jobs with titles like software engineer, as well as QA/tester, full stack engineer, and front end engineer.

Graduates of Epicodus have praised the required internship component of the Full Stack Certificate program, crediting it with preparing them for landing a job as a full-time coder. One student, who called her internship a “valuable experience,” observed that “While you only work with the company for a few short weeks, it really opens your eyes to what professional developers do on a day to day basis—and you make good connections.”

Graduates have also articulated their gratitude for the affordability of the courses offered at Epicodus and the collegiality and community of their peers. The workload expectations of Epicodus courses are intense, and some students expressed frustration with the curriculum and pedagogy, suggesting that student experience will depend on the instructor. Epicodus is open about the fact that they only hire former students, but some students in their programs hoped for more expert guidance. Still, as one graduate reflected, “with any program, you’ll need to get good at teaching yourself as a developer anyway,” and the emphasis on self-guided study at Epicodus can prepare students for a lifetime of learning the changing field of coding.
