Byte Academy is a tech school that believes in “personalized applied learning.” Byte specializes in Python, data science, and software development, with a curriculum focused on “getting you a job.” Historically, the school has been known for FinTech, Quant-Algos, and Blockchain programs alongside Data Science and full stack Python Software Development. According to Switchup, the school was one of the first in the world to establish a FinTech program and was also one of the first to offer a Python full stack software development bootcamp in New York City. It’s licensed by the New York State Education Department.

Founded in 2014 by Rak Chugh, co-founder of Byte Consulting and SpryteLabs, Byte Academy promotes three major ideals in its educational opportunities: personalized, applied, and affordable. The personalized aspect means that there are small cohorts for each program, allowing students to get 1-on-1 instructor help throughout the course. “Applied” focuses on giving students more hands-on work to help them get used to the challenges of tech careers. Finally, Byte offers the unique opportunity to take affordable, low-cost introductory classes before joining a bootcamp to make sure it’s the right fit. If it is, the cost of the intro course is applied to the bootcamp—making tech learning more accessible to more people.

What Classes Are Available?

If you’re looking to learn about Python, Data Science, or Software Development, Byte has options that may fit your needs.

Byte Academy offers two primary bootcamp options, as well as several introductory courses.

The full-time Python Bootcamp is 14 weeks long and covers many industry-standard technologies. It focuses on full stack development, with learning based on: Python, Object-Oriented Programming, SQL, JavaScript, and React. The curriculum includes basic software development skills like Intro to Python and Fundamentals of JavaScript to more advanced topics like Intermediate React and Building an End to End Application. Bootcamp culminates with a capstone project, which students can choose based on their interests.

Students do need to have some basic knowledge of Python to join the bootcamp. You can take and pass the Intro to Python assessment, given on the last day of the intro course, or you can test out of the pre-requisite course altogether. Students can also choose to take Python Bootcamp as a 24-week part-time course.

The Data Science Bootcamp at Byte Academy offers a 14-week deep dive into all things Data Science. The course covers industry-standard topics like Python, SQL, mathematics, data visualization, machine learning, and Aiza. The curriculum includes a range of data-focused topics such as Computer Science Fundamentals, Object-Oriented Programming, Software Theory, Neural Networks, and Machine Learning Theory. Data Science Bootcamp also concludes with a student-driven capstone project.

If you’re new to Python, Data Science, or Software Development, Byte offers introductory courses in each to help you learn the basics. Intro to Python is a two-week part-time course designed for beginners. The course provides a basic understanding of software engineering and the Python programming language. Byte notes that it’s a “great way to find out if coding is right for you.”

The full-time four-week Intro to Software Development course builds on Intro to Python. During the class, students learn more about the field of web development and the skills it takes to build a full stack application. You’ll learn fundamentals like HTML and CSS, as well as introductory aspects of back-end programming. Students also learn Flask, and by the end of the course, build a basic web application including a “fully integrated backend with database and a front end hosting information that you programmatically created.”

During the Intro to Data Science course, which also builds on Intro to Python, students learn about the field of machine learning and practice skills necessary to building a machine learning model. The four-week full-time course covers basic software engineering topics, with the end goal of writing your own machine learning model. At the end of the course, students will have a machine learning model that can “accurately predict handwritten digits.”

Byte Academy offers a four-week Elite Interview Prep course with Richard Huang, a software engineer at the prestigious firm Two Sigma. He designed the course to share the most common types of interview questions that come up during technical interviews, as well as how to think about them. The major topics of the workshop are data structures, algorithms, and practice. The workshops include topics such as arrays, linked lists, sorting, traversals, and dynamic programming. In the practice portion of the course, students will participate in 1-on-1 mock interviews and receive personalized feedback.

Class Formats

Courses at Byte Academy are offered on a full-time and part-time basis depending on the program. Currently, all courses are taught remotely due to COVID-19.

Byte uses a “flipped classroom” model, which means that students learn independently via recorded instruction (Byte notes there is some live instruction as well); however, class meetings are largely reserved for work on projects and assignments which means students can get assistance on complex topics in real-time.

A typical day in a full-time bootcamp starts with an hour-long check-in based on questions the student has about the material and assignments. When the check-in is complete, the day’s recorded lesson becomes available for students to watch and work through the exercises. At the end of the day, the last hour is reserved for group coding reviews and 1-on-1 support from instructors. Instructors are also available outside of class times during designated office hours.

The part-time bootcamps allow students to learn over a longer 24-week period, which is convenient for those already in the workforce. Part-time classes meet for required check-ins twice per week on Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6-7 pm EST. After the required check-ins, the video recordings are released. Throughout the course, there are lectures, exercises, assessments, and quizzes to help students comprehend the material. One student reviewer estimated that the lectures take about 1.5-2 hours per day. In addition, there’s an hour of code review, which means “going over lecture questions and getting help on homework if needed.” Outside of class times, instructors are available for office hours between 6-7 pm EST on the days of the week class is not occurring.

Admissions Process

Byte Academy’s admissions process is a relatively simple five-step process.

It all starts with a short online application for whichever bootcamp you’re looking to enroll in. Once your application is received, the Byte Admissions team will schedule a “getting to know you” interview to discuss the timeline and goals you’d like to achieve with the bootcamp.

Next, prospective students take the Intro to Python course (the fee is automatically deducted from your tuition cost, should you enroll in bootcamp) or test out of the Python requirement.

After completing the Python requirement, potential students participate in a technical challenge designed to test their problem-solving skills and pragmatic thinking. This is the final step before Admissions makes a final enrollment decision.

Pricing & Payment Options

Byte Academy has several methods of payment for its bootcamps: Pay upfront, loan financing, and an Income Sharing Agreement (ISA).

Each of the full-time bootcamps costs $14,950. Students who choose the pay upfront option will be required to make a $500 refundable deposit to hold the seat. The remaining balance must be paid before the first day of class.

For students who want or need to finance bootcamp through a loan, Byte Academy has a partnership through CLIMB Credit. It’s free to apply for the loan, students receive quick approval, and there are interest-only payment options available.

Byte also offers an Income Sharing Agreement through Leif, which means students pay the $500 upfront, but then won’t begin paying back the loan until they obtain a job making $40,000 or more.

The introductory courses are offered at a lower cost. Intro to Python costs $57, and Intro to Software Development and Intro to Data Science cost $1,000, Elite Interview Prep also costs $1,000. If you take the introductory courses and decide to continue learning through a bootcamp, the tuition you’ve already paid will automatically be deducted from the cost of bootcamp.

Career Support Services

Byte Academy graduates have the opportunity to get real-world experience after completing bootcamp by applying to an internship at SpryteLabs. During the internship, students work with software developers to get hands-on experience. The internship focuses on the “non-academic side of software” which includes working with a development team and learning “agile methodologies for project sprints.”

Outside of the internship opportunity, Byte doesn’t offer clearly defined career support services.

The programs were also noted as affordable, and the “free intro course” (Intro to Python) was a major benefit for those who go on to take bootcamps.

Students did find some negative aspects of Byte’s programming. One student noted that because the program was on the shorter end, the “foundation can be shaky” for some of the more complicated programs, although they reassured future students that if they made a good effort, they would be okay. Another pointed out that “job leads are non-existent,” but also that career services is not something Byte emphasizes beyond its SpryteLabs internship partnership.

Most students agreed that “coursework can be demanding,” however, students get what they put into the course. Students found that they felt challenged through the entire course and that their skill set grew quite a bit during that time as well.
